We haven’t paid our taxes to the NHS. We’ve handed it to the corrupt and possibly incompetent politicians (I’ll be damned if it turns out it wasn’t intentional sabotage of the nation for personal gain). They have no interest in satisfying your personal interests. Regardless of what you think they SHOULD be doing, reality shows that their real job is to maintain power by acquiring more votes than their opponent. Taxation without representation is theft. You, me and many others have been swindled. We’d best pray that a candid candidate comes along with the influence to eliminate the disingenuous and tepid politicians who currently hold office. Regardless of that, I wish everyone reading this a bright future. Let us shine bright despite the gloom that threatens the UK, let our shining light dispel the darkness, show us the path forward, towards a United Kingdom we can all take pride in!

The NHS spends between £30-£43 million per annum on interpreters. This is appalling. Certainly foreigner visitors to this country should not be able to access the NHS in any way without paying the full costs. There should be a pay desk on every entrance to a hospital which takes your credit card upon arrival and a full charge for everything should be presented and taken out of the card before they leave. For every foreign resident who cannot speak English - why don't they speak English. They should provide their own interpreter. Priority should at all times be on clinical need not race.

i was working as a midwife in South Africa working in HIV counselling . We had a lot of immigrants so we needed interpreters. The Govt contracted to a phone service interpretation and they were phoned to interpret for both sides - we passed the phone back and forward. This was done at need and was paid at time used.

During naturalisation to become a British citizen, we saw many people that could not understand English at all, when they were asked to imtroduce themselves Yet we had to pass English test. So how exactly these people passed?

In the United Kingdom, the average salary for interpreters varies depending on the source, but is generally between £30,000 and £51,000 per year:

And even then they don’t always do what they are paid for! My mum works in a jobcentre dealing with these people all the time. Plenty of them are obviously faking and can speak better English than they claim. They play daft knowing it will drag it out longer than the staff have got to deal with them (they get only 10 minutes per appointment now!) so they get off without having to answer questions for another couple of weeks. The staff are stuck with only one company that provides interpreters via phone as only one company has that contract. It takes ages to get an interpreter on the phone as they all work from home so basically do whatever they want, and when they do get them there have been way more times than is acceptable where the interpreter just loses interest and hangs up! They are getting paid more than the frontline staff, get to work from home, can pick and choose which calls they deal with, and often have to be coaxed to do their damn jobs! The staff do often just resort to using google translate because it’s more reliable and a hell of a lot faster!

As a disabled army veteran of thirteen years service, I am physically and mentally disabled, and 64 years old. I have been waiting for over two months to see a mental health specialist to get help for my ptsd. Like lots of people in this once great country I have served our late Queen, paid all my taxes, and for what. To be treated as a second class citizens in our own country. What is the point of struggling day and night.

I know it doesn't really help your situation but I would like to sincerely thank you for your service to this country. Please be assured there will be millions of others who feel the same. I pray your fortunes improve soon and you get the care you need and deserve.

@russroberts Personally, I would give NHS mental health services a wide berth for something like PTSD. You don’t want to be seeing a CBT practitioner. That could make it worse. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) seems to work well for PTSD. It costs between £60 to £80 a session. You don’t usually need many sessions. Hope this may help.

It's a peculiarly British thing, the NHS funding interpreters for patients; other countries expect people who use medical services to provide their own interpreter or pay for one. When I used an Italian hospital for a minor procedure, I brought someone with me to interpret and, even then, the receptionist sneered at the fact I "hadn't bothered to learn Italian" (I was only on holiday there!) The NHS needs to embrace the notion that, while people who are entitled to treatment should receive it, the patients have a responsibility for providing their own language service.

ridiculous. Europe will be finished in a few decades. I'm not in the UK, but my gp just ditched my son the day he turned 18 recently because he had not had an appointment for 7 years. so his reward for GOOD HEALTH was to get dumped by the doctor. And i know this is only because they're under pressure to take a quota of people arriving illegally. FGS!!! Now my son has no doctor if he needs one. I rang around and had no luck. They're all chock a block.

This has made me so mad! Why do they have the right to a professional interpreter?? I live in Spain and when I go to the GP or Hospital I have to pay and take my own interpreter, rightly so. I speak simple Spanish, however, when it comes to understanding medical terms I realise I need an interpreter. They are only provided if you are paying for private healthcare. I have children and grandchildren in the UK, of which one has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, he is having to wait 18 months to see a paediatrician.
