Shocking Prices and Shortages at our Dollar General Store!

I was very surprised to see not only the prices, but how many shelves had holes and were bare. I think we too are now seeing shortages appear in our area.

Some time ago, I tweaked my cheese options in the home, and did the following, which I continue to this day: I keep 5 "core" cheeses on hand: grated Parmesan (the green capped canister stuff), blocks of Mozzarella, Monterey Jack, Swiss, Xtra sharp CHeddar. I no longer buy more expensive cheeses, they just aren;t in the budget. Other than the Parmesan, I keep cheese costs at $4 or less per LB. When shopping, I do the math and compare costs to the lb, not slice. I hand plane cheese at home. Keep the cost per lb in mind, when comparing block, vs preshredded or sliced variations. Looking over your shoulder, these are items that simply are cost prohibative in my situation. I stopped buying the occassional bag of fzn potatoes at least a year ago. I couldn't rationalize spending $3/30 oz bag of fries, when fresh potatoes (either home grown or no more than $1, often far less/lb). Ditto all the premade sweets, frozen treats, mixes, condiments, etc. Cold cereal also is cut from the list. I offer cream of wheat, oatmeal, home made muffins, banana bread, waffles, toast with my own jam, French toast, etc. Just can't buy the processed items. We eat well, don't get me wrong, it's a you to do scenario. I am a scratch cook, we eat seasonally, home grown etc. I buy ingredients. Tonight's supper is meatloaf, baked sweet potatoes, and a mix of home canned green beans in home canned stewed tomatoes. Yummy.

I found a second-hand food processor at Goodwill for $6 and now grate my own cheese....much cheaper. Also make my own mayonnaise, about a dollar for 2 cups..

We know how to cook and preserve and were raised by our parents and grandparents who not only went through the depression but we don't live where you can just go get something from the store anytime you want, especially now a days! Most folks would call us poor but I've never felt that way as long as we can pay the bills, we can make do!

My Dollar Tree was rearranging/turning to the $5 store...or something. All they had was craft supplies. Hardly any food, hardware items. Some boxes were piled up in aisles but like beauty items, candles, etc.

Prices are ridiculous, empty shelves and shrinkflation is frustrating to be sure. Take some time to watch some videos of WWII rationing. It's an eye opener. People have no idea how bad things can get. As a sidenote, swing by the pet food and treat section and something special for the Kitty Krew!

WW2 rationing tells us that no matter how bad food scarcity might get, we can do what we need to do to get by. People panic about our food disappearing, but our ancestors could show us a thing or two. They were tough folks, and we need to get off our pity pot and learn a few things about how to be satisfied with less than we might want or be used to.

Back before I changed what I ate, from a lot of commercial, processed foods to "straight from the farm" produce and meats, I was always out of breath, with the slightest exertion. Not only that, but my stomach was always constantly bloated. I would answer the phone, and people would ask me why I was out of breath. All I did was walk across the living room. After I gave up all the bad food, the breathlessness and bloating went away. Now, if I so much as eat one item that is processed or has some chemical mixed in, I get out of breath or get a headache. This happened yesterday when I cooked a pot of chicken thighs and dumped in a lot of mixed seasonings from one container. It must have MSG or something in it, because the breathlessness came back. One small burger from McD's will do it. Anything processed will send me into the "I can't breathe mode." So now, I have to walk right by the processed foods. Only if I can read the ingredients and know exactly what is in it, will I buy anything frozen or off the shelf. It's not worth having health problems over it. I feel so much better now.

@@heathermcdonald7354 Ground beef doesn't bother me if it's pure ground beef and not mixed with seasonings or fillers of any kind. In the U.S., breads have so many chemicals in them (unnecessarily) I think they may also trigger it. I buy Ezekiel bread, or other organic bread, but even the organic ones have sugar. These chemicals in the U.S. are killing us, and many don't even realize it. The UK and most of the world in fact does not use chemicals like the U.S. does. If you compare two cans of the same kind of soup by the same manufacturer in the U.S. and in say Scotland, you see that the formulation is different. Fewer ingredients are in other country's foods, by far. Our foods here are loaded in sugar in things that don't need it, and corn syrup, a really nasty form of sugar that has increased the incidence of diabetes massively. When tourists come here from other countries they often cannot even eat our food, or won't. It's a crime. It really is.

This is very interesting to me because a Polish friend just told me not to eat U.S bread because it affects your breathing. You are right. And $4 for hotdog rolls or any bread is ridiculously high unless it's from a bakery. Time to learn how to do our own. What do you think of these new brioche buns that restaurants are pushing everywhere? I refuse to eat them. When the bread is heavier than the hamburger, we have a problem. They want us fat and I picked up on that right away. They don't even taste good.

We used to shop dollar general quite a bit as we saved a lot there, but like everyone else, they jumped on the greedy wagon, so now we have to shop strictly around sales everywhere. We hardly go there now. The cashier boy yelled my husbands name, when he finally saw him again. He missed him I guess? I like to get their canned veggies when they have them on sale 2 for a $1.00. we stock up on those. We used to fo their $5.00 off coupon when they have their Maxwell house coffee on sale too and stock up on that as well.

Prices look about the same as our DG. There are some good buys. I like the 5$ off 25 on saturdays. Some things are higher than walmart, but when your tired it's worth a little extra to just take a short trip thru DG, instead of walking the big parking lot and huge WM supercenter. Dollar General is all processed food that is full of preservatives. I wouldn’t even call it a grocery store. It is more like the old general stores without fresh items.

You have to buy/eat only what's on sale. Two months ago, my Kroger had 18 count eggs (limit 5) for .99! I had a coupon for one doz. extra-large eggs for FREE!! I got the five 18 count for my daughter in law. That was 120 eggs for $4,99. Eggs will last six weeks in the fridge. Two weeks ago, they had those eggs for $1.49. I did it again. This week they had whole beef tenderloin for $9.99 lb. I had a coupon for $6.00 off. The butcher cut it into 12 thick steaks. Final price was $41.37 /$3.45 per steak. You can do it friends! Save up a little bit here and there and you will be able to pounce on these sweet deals.

Dollar general stores are notorious for being under stocked and boxes sitting in the aisles. I used to think it was isolated to the ones I've visited, but videos like this n others say different. If you ever get the chance to try those Lamb Weston french fries they are better in my opinion than Orieida. Get the hand cut ones, they are delicious! Dollar General has a pretty good freezer section, especially if you need to run in and grab something, but they are a bit pricey on some things. I always grab cereal at Dollar General. They run a lot of sales on it and 2 for $5 of those large boxes is a great deal. Yes, the prices have really got out of hand. It is sad how bad it has got for everyone.

The higher prices are for convenince. They do have a sales ad. If you must, go on a Saturday where you can get an adfitional $5.00 off buying minimum $25.00. Not hard to do, but be judicious.

I know when Dollar Generals first came out their prices were a lot better. Now days they shrink the size of items and charge more. I go there on a rare occasion. I try to stick with Walmart and ALDI. Everything everywhere is so high. 😒

Most of the foods you are covering, are loaded with seed oils, refined sugar and flour and loads of food additives Perfect formula for just about any chronic disease, and great for weakening of the immune system. The population in great need of education, re-education regarding the real value of cooking from scratch and severely limiting sugar from any source. Just a sad commentary. But you sure are a great guide.

If you make burritos at home, they freeze surprisingly well. I make a bunch of them at a time with chopped onion, refried beans, Spanish rice mix, shredded cheese and Mission soft tortilla shells. Wrap in plastic wrap then in ziplock-type freezer bags. They keep a very long time and don't lose quality. Take one out at a time for lunch and either brown it in a pan or what I do is just put it in the microwave for not very long at all, like a minute and 1⁄2 or 2 minutes, flipping over halfway through.

Yeah dollar general is PRICEY! in my area.I dont go unless i NEED something. I thought i had a muffin pan at the house but i didn't. So i went to DG and the price was decent.

Hey Mr. Tom,Michelina's Grande Cheesy chipotle beef nacho pasta is good.A little tip about cooking it,turns out better if you throw a damp paper towel completely over the box for the last 2 and half minutes of cooking it in the microwave.Helps keep the pasta from drying out 😁.

Always check like items, such as the El Monterey burritos. You bought 3/$5, paying $1.67 each. I can't quite make out the price label, but on the bottom of that same freezer case, looks to be $6.49/8 count of one flavor. That brings each one down to 81 cents-50% less than what you were paying. Again-not 100% sure on the cost of the 8 count pack-for your consideration.
