बौद्ध धर्म अगर पुनर्जन्म में नहीं मानता तो वो क्या था बुद्ध की जातक कथाओं जो उनके पूर्व जन्म की कहानियां बताती है। आत्मा शब्द कई अलग अलग संदर्भों के साथ इस्तेमाल किया गया है। कभी उसे मानोमय कोश सूक्ष्म शरीर, व्यक्तिगत जीव, शुद्ध निर्भरांत स्वरूप में सेल्फ, वैश्विक चेतना के साथ एकात्म स्वरूप, इस तरह अलग अलग संदर्भों (connotation) के साथ उपयोग किया गया है।
