Actually parts of sharia law are recognised in uk law already. For example under sharia people are not allowed to charge interest. So uk law allows a very convoluted arrangement for a third party to buy a house rent it to the "purchaser " and they pay for their house that way. Its called an Islamic mortgage. They exist!! This means as well that they avoid paying stamp duty that the rest of us would otherwise pay too. Lots of cultures have this "no interest on loans" requirements but only Muslims have something in law to protect it.

What's shocking to me as an outsider looking in is that there hasn't been a response by the King, the spiritual leader of the Church of England. England is the holy center of the church of England, and should be rigorously protected on behalf of all who are a part of that religion. England cannot be fully secular, because of it's position. Just like the Vatcian cannot be secular. In both cases the leader of the state is also the spiritual leader of a major religion. The Uk already has multiple legal authorities. Jewish Beth Din have operated in the UK for well over 100 years and is responsible for many things including divorces. We should have only one legal system and that is the UK court system.

Jewish divorces are slightly different. They can only be given by a man to his wife but they also have to go through the civil courts first and get a divorce that is recognised by English law.
