Can n1 really be the density of electrons in the traps? If that were the case, n1 would equal Nt*f and Nt = n1+p1 which it doesn't.

You are absolute right Beth. n1 and p1 are not the electrons in the traps but electrons and holes in the CB and VB respectively which are generated by some perturbation (usually light or heat). If I said otherwise I miss spoke.
