FYI shocks do not carry or support any weight of the vehicle. They simply dampen the movement of the up and down motion. Heavier shocks can help when you have a heavier load or vehicle because a more stiffened rebound can stop the bouncing. VWs have a very light front end. and a very gentle rebound is necessary to make them ride smooth. The Sachs Boge original were designed to do that. They are not the cheapest but by far not the most expensive and really work well. Check the links in the description for the best deals I could find.

KYBs on my 67 T2 was comfortable at high speed. Let's just say I pegged the speedometer on the way to Bellingham.

I find the basic oil shocks in the front are perfect; the KYBs or anything stiffer is better in the back.

Agree. I run stockers in the front and Monroe gas adjustables in the back, set about mid way, a little stiffer than stock. This combo is with 7 inch wide chrome steel rims with 185 tires so there is more rolling weight for the springs to deal with.

Completely agree. OG Boge shocks are the best imo. I don't like the gas shocks personally. People need to understand that the springs support the weight, the shocks are to DAMPEN the spring rebound, they do nothing for supporting weight. Also, og shocks will last a very long time on a VW! Don't throw them out just because they are old. Mike, please don't forget to put the link in the description for those shocks

I run KYB Gas Adjust on the back of my 66' Sundial camper and KYB GR2 upfront running them since 2000. Driven from NM-MI Canada to Mexico rides great!

Single acting was stock right? Only dampening was on rebound. Made for a real soft ride when new.

Couldn't stand the KYBs that were on my '75. Switched to Boge and the improvement is amazing!

I think VW used different Shocks in different markets ... Here in Australia I think we got harder shocks than the American market (from what you're saying). Here standard shocks came with a VW logo and P.No.. I used KYB Gas on my 64 Kombi and they were soft !!. But they didn't suffer from fade like standard oil shocks.

I’ve used KYB GR2’s on my Buses with good results. But for anything else… red Konis are the absolute best riding and driving shocks around. You just have to loosen up your wallet to pay for them. But worth every penny.
