Proper explanation of *how* to make meane forme. Now all we need to know is *why* we need to make the outer and inner quarters of a shoe the same . . . In the old days when quarters were clicked out of a leather hide by a press tool, you would save 50% of the tooling cost by doing this. Considering shoes were made in half-sizes and every size needed clicking dies, this added up to a big saving in the up-front cost of producing a new style of shoe over a full range of adult sizes. But today, quarters and vamp are cut with a laser-guided profile cutter. So there is no saving in tool cost when making patterns off a meane forme. Yet the practice still persists.
