In real life, William Adams (Blackthorne) did get an opportunity to go back to England on a ship captained by another Englishman, Saris, who came 13 years later. By this point, Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) had given him permission to leave and he was about to go back to England with Saris but changed his mind at the last minute because he didn't like Saris and Saris iirc didn't think of much Adams either despite offering to give him a ride back to England because he had become too "Japanized."

No battle in the book. The book ends with Toranaga having an inner-monologue about how he wanted to be Shogun all along and admitting to the Reader (but to himself) that had burned Blackthorne's ship and that Blackthorne would never leave Japan because he considers him a friend. Its assumed that Fujiko will commit seppuku after having made arrangements for Blackthorne and his house. And I believe there was something about Blackthorne receiving Omi's wife as his own wife (per Fujiko) and he was given Kiku as his consort as a gift from Toranaga (divorce was very easy then). The 1980's show had a great twist in that Blackthorne then gave Kiku to Omi (lots of men giving women away) once he found out that Omi was in love with her. I don't think we will get it, but they could make another season out of the village life mixed with them all being at war, though again I do think thats a stretch. Also, it might be more copium, but Fujiko was going to become a nun to be closer to the grave of her husband and son's ashes. I wonder if burying them at sea will change her mind. She may want to stay in Ajiro to be close to them. I choose to think of her accepting of Blackthorne's idea to bury them at sea as Blackthorne attempting to get her to stay in his house one last time. Her going along with the idea says to me that she will. The episode is titled "A Dream of a Dream". All that about an old Blackthorne was just Blackthorne dreaming it while concussed. There is no paradox after he drops it into the ocean because it then became a future he chose not to have. Basically because he's accepted staying in Japan.

@megamonster12347 ай бұрын
@@timothydavidcurp While there is no direct sequel to Shogun, the author did write a story that takes place during the Meiji Restoration and ofc Toranaga's descendent is the shogun in that one and there is a descendent of Blackthorne's who mentions being descended from a shipwrecked English sailor in Japan.

@@megamonster1234 Yes. It’s also based loosely on the actual history of the period. It’s not nearly as good or entertaining a novel as “Shogun,” but I think it would make for a great miniseries in the hands of these people.

There was a battle in the book, but no detail. Just that 40,000 heads were cut that day. Toranaga gave permission to Fuji to kill herself, but to make it look like an accident.

“The Ogre lost his precious Leafless Branch the moment he crushed the Flower underfoot; sisters in the end, after all” Yabushige and Toranaga smiling at each other in the end. He got the best end he could have gotten, realizing that whether he knew it or not, he has served his Lord Toranaga excellently. Blackthorne kills a possible future version of himself-an old man, filled with regret-by mirroring Mariko (literally doing a ritual su!c!d3 like a woman [a blade through the heart] instead of seppuku [slicing his belly open] like a samurai would) in order to protect Ajiro: the first completely selfless thing he has done in the show. They actually managed to tie up most, if not all, loose ends without sacrificing the pacing and the rhythm that they built up from the past 9 episodes. So who is ready for a “new/separate” mini-series, titled “Sekigahara”?
@MiLikesVids7 ай бұрын
He doesn't get it back or leave Japan. That was a dream while he was injured. A dream he lets go of with Fuji's help. What she said to Blackthorne, let your hands be the last to hold her is what Mariko said to Fuji about her son when they came to execute him. All a dream of a dream. Yeah, there is no big battle in the book. It is all Mariko's story and how she was the Queen sacrifice in Toranaga's chess game with Ishido to break up the unity of the regents against Toranaga. I'd love to see these people tackle Eiji Yoshikawa's novels 'Taiko' and 'Musashi'. Taiko would feel like a true prequel to this series but it is an awesome epic all on its own. 'Musashi' the story of one of the greatest samurai in Japanese history would be an awesome role I'd love to see Tadanobu Asano play. He channels so much Toshiro Mifune dynamism and flourish that I would love to see Asano play Musashi. The role Mifune played in Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy.

The book ended before the great battle of Sekigahara it was a decisive battle on October 21, 1600 (Keichō 5, 15th day of the 9th month) in what is now Gifu Prefecture, Japan, at the end of the Sengoku period. This battle was fought by the forces of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga character in the story Shogun) against a coalition of Toyotomi loyalist clans under Ishida Mitsunari, several of which defected before or during the battle, leading to a Tokugawa victory. The Battle of Sekigahara was the largest battle of Japanese feudal history and is often regarded as the most important. Mitsunari's defeat led to the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate. Edo era 1603 to 1868 This shogunate ruled until the Meiji era which was founded in the year 1868 and ended in 1912

What an episode! What a show! I know many were expecting a cgi fest & special effect orgy type of battle for the finale, but they crushed it with incredible exposition & story telling instead. Despite the lack of action it seems like everyone absolutely loved it regardless. I really think this was the case because of the amazing cast doing a mind blowing job. Look at how Tadanobu Asano portrayed Yabushige - he was a two-faced scoundrel with some twisted fetishes yet oozed charisma which endeared him to the audience. That’s not an easy thing to pull off yet he did so effortlessly. His performance really personifies the work of this superb cast which carried the show. Everything was top notch from the cinematography to the costumes to the sets, etc making it hard for anything to stand out with everything being so good yet because it was so good, the acting brought so much dimension & depth to it. If they don’t receive recognition & awards for this show during awards season it will be a total travesty. The only bummer is that it’s all over now & there’s no season 2.😥

@@jamescupedro That’s a good comparison I’m not a huge TWD fan but have seen enough to know that Negan is a tyrant but still does some good whether or not the motivation is selfish or for the greater good; charisma goes a long way into being likable even if you’re not a great person.

There was never a big fight in the book. In the book the 3rd person narration speaks of the coming Battle of Sekigahara and the rise of Toranaga to Shogun, pretty much as Toranaga in the series explains to Yabu. Speaking of Yabu it's notable that a man so fascinated by death faces his own death with a smile, and Toranaga smiles back. Expanding his role in this series was brilliant. He provided a very human touch against the formal high stakes politics and formal theater of the Council and the Great Lords jockeying for power and position - which is no small thing given when you first meet him all you really know is he had a man boiled alive just so he could observe and appreciate it. The book is an excellent read - your loss for not bothering to read it.

In real history there was a big battle at Sekigahara. Some of Ishida's allies turned coat as the battle took a turn for the worse as it progressed seeing that the west was losing. A better ending for the story would have been that some of Ishido's allies who had their families taken as hostage at Osaka castle turned on Ishido once they were freed through Mariko's bold move forcing Ishido to back down making him announce that there are no hostages in Osaka and they were free to leave.

The finale's "climax" (more like an epilogue) was terrible. It was so obviously rushed; including the subplots (such as the conflict between Blackthorne and his lover's abusive husband who for some reason becomes Blackthorne's new best friend lol). And I don't care if the book ended like this. These are two different mediums. Nobody wants to watch major parts of a plot explained through narration and dialogue. It would be like watching a series based on the American Civil War with no war and just ending with President Lincoln explaining how he schemed to pit his enemies against each other to win without war. Like wait, what? lmao. And don't get me started on the ridiculous overuse of seppuku. I feel like more samurai offed themselves in this show than in real life (less died from conflict in the show 🤣jk but it seemed that way). I am just not impressed and I wanted so much for this to be a classic. If this is how the book ended, they can keep it 🥱 remind me never to waste my time watching another series on feudal Japan based on a book written by a white man lol

Mariko and Yabushige (along with the shinobi scene) were the best parts of the show IMO. The actress and actor who played them should definitely receive an award. They were especially outstanding among such a great cast. The writing was the worst part for me, and it's also the most important part of a story, even a television story, IMO. What a shame.

Why did the ninjas stop after the explosion? Why bother with a bloody siege unless u finish the job? Maybe they ran away after seeing they killed Mariko when the mission was to kidnap her? I love the old samurai masquerading as peasant Christian convert in Yabushige's village. What happened to Rodriguez? I enjoyed the exchanges between him and Blackthorne and I was hoping to see more of them playing the dozens on one another before the show ended. Great show, even w/o a showdown battle for supremacy, just victory by superior strategy. Someone needs to teach Lord T how to play chess.

The book never said what happened to Rodrigues. He just disappears from the narrative. From a quick search it appears that [unlike pretty much every _other_ main character in the book] he *wasn't* based on a real-life individual, so there's no "what really happened to this guy" for us to go on.

What a horrible ending in this Shogun version. I was disappointed by the script of this last episode. Absurd scenes with inconngrous dialogs. From 1 to 9 chapters I liked visual effects and digital setting. The outcome and the attitude if main characters were highlighted from best to worst, except Mariko's performance. The main barbarian of this serie wasn't the character John but the director who filmed it. After comparing them, I prefer a thousand times the 1980 version by Toshiro Mifune even without the improved visual effects CGI finished.
