I noticed some odd (yet seemingly deliberate) contradictions in this episode: (1) Toranaga warmly offers his brother a night of celebration and rest, but privately reveals that he can’t stand his brother (2) The Lady of the Willow World (Gin) points out that Toranaga doesn’t make careless mistakes (such as leaving his garrison so carelessly exposed to threats) but Toranaga silences her suspicions (3) Toranaga gives the Willow World lady what she wants in his will after initially denying her request (4) Toranaga checks Buntaro’s emotions and refuses to release Mariko from her life (despite no apparent reason to spare her life any longer) (5) Toranaga refers to Blackthorne as a barbarian after going through so much effort to recognize him as a Hatamoto (6) Toranaga surrenders to his brother and publicly shuts down Crimson Sky, but allows Blackthorn to just insult his men and leave (after Mariko - in an earlier scene - clearly warns him to be respectful) There is more going on here than meets the eye. I almost feel as if a future episode will show all the “plans within plans” that were hidden throughout this episode. Toranaga’ s brother (Lord Saeki) asked Toranaga’s son (Nagakado) if he preferred “stories” and “legends” over the simple, awful truth. I think this was a lesson both for Nagakado and for the audience (and a lesson about death that I don’t think Nagakado ever really understood).

Toranaga reserved talking about Crimson Sky because he knew his half-brother was easily-persuaded and did not want to give away the battle plans, which was a chess move by Toranaga that may prove extremely crucial when Crimson Sky is in full effect. Toranaga does have a reason to keep Mariko from offing herself; it was her father’s wish that she would continue his fight, which means this battle is as much hers as it is Toranaga’s.
@bradleye6607 ай бұрын
@nont18411 Absolutely. He purposely dissuades Buntaro from killing Blackthorne because he has plans for him during Crimson Sky. He also will not give him the ship back so he can return home. Blackthorne most likely realizes he will not be leaving Japan at this point.
@G1Arduo7 ай бұрын
I would also like to add: (1) Gin deliberately sowing discord among Toranaga's officers (suggesting Blackthorne's interest with Mariko) and then asking Toranaga a significant favor later on. (2) Follow-up to (1), The "secrets" of the WIllow World is not something that you just freely share. I would think Gin would be a trader of information and secrets. (3) Council should've been at war by now as per last episode. Jozen was assassinated and they're still trying to take Toranaga into custody. Ochiba has already signaled the start of war in last episode. (4) Saeki suggesting that Toranaga gift him with the province of Izu was directly meant to fish a response from Yabushige. (5) Saeki's story about Toranaga executing his opponent in his first battle, was for Hiromatsu. (6) Its clear that the WIllow World is complicit to the assassination attempt. I'm assuming this is what they paid for the Edo space they got. (7) Saeki decides to stay in town and avail himself of his gifts, even after declaring for Ishido. With Jozen killed before him, doesn't make sense he put himself in danger like that. I'm getting the impression that Toranaga's testing everyone in this episode. And he may have Saeki in on it too. And only Gin's managed to pick-up on his manipulations.

One thing that stood out to me this episode is how Toranaga hadn't decided Blackthorne's roll yet, and that was made very apparent. I'll be very surprised if he hasn't placed more trust in Blackthorne over his other men, as he knows Blackthorne has to be all in with him whether he likes it or not - and has saved his life twice. Blackthorne walking off at the end disrespectfully causing a scene, something he did earlier in the season (leaving Osaka) to once again save the day, may well be another ploy. John is after all the only man who could get away with doing so as he's just a 'barbarian'. It would sow the seed into his brothers mind that Toranaga's camp is in shambles, and he has really surrendered. I don't believe Toranaga actually planned to surrender, it's just another string being pulled.

The biggest reason why this show is so powerful is because it's only going to be one season. Everything that's happening is important now. If this were a multi-season show then almost all of the storylines would have their ultimate resolution put off for multiple years. And we'd be spending season after season of power dynamics shifting only subtly. But everything that's happening is going to be paid off this season so there's no fluff. Everything matters. All stories that are introduced are going to have a definitive beginning, middle, and ending this season. Personally, I long ago wearied of TV shows that went on for years and years and stretched the story out artificially. Shogun rules so hard because every single moment in every episode points to what I hope is a powerful, devastating conclusion.
@thatguywhois7 ай бұрын
It's a big reason but I don't think it's the biggest reason. Writing, pace, performance, tone, cinematography are the bigger reason. While I grieve Game of Thrones last season, but I do think Shogun would do extremely well in at least 2 or 3 seasons.
@VictorDiGiovanni7 ай бұрын
@@thatguywhois But the problem with so many shows is that they really only have one season worth of story, but they stretch it out. The middle seasons are just exercises in spinning narrative plates. Sure, you get some standout episodes in that bloated middle, but what happens with every one of these shows that stretch things out is that they have to keep escalating the scale of the story and pulling on ever more preposterous twists to maintain the attention of the audience, to the point where the final season or final episodes NEVER match the beginning of the show. Game of Thrones. Lost. Battlestar Galactica. Stranger Things. Walking Dead. My most dreaded words are when am executive producer of a new series that has gotten a lot of buzz gives the inevitable interview where he says "we've got a great plan for six seasons". No you don't. You have a three episode intro arc, a two episode finale, and multiple seasons of power dynamics that shift back and forth over and over until the producers get the word that it's time to wrap things up, and then they have to evaluate how much of their original ending is still viable (hint: not much) Shogun works so well because every single scene matters. The original intended fate of each character is going to happen as planned. It's going to pay off 100% as originally envisioned, and went be recalibrated based on raised or decreased budgets, or actor problems, or a minor character getting popular and taking over the show, or any of the endless reasons why a show goes off the rails in seconds and third seasons. Look at Severance. Should have been a great one and done season. Was heading that way, but it became a hit, so the extension and escalation of the story commenced and then all the behind the scenes drama of season two commenced. I cannot convey how much respect I have for the makers of Shogun for committing to a single season. Bravo. My fervent hope, though, is that these same creatives tackle another single season story in this world. Either another of Clavell's thematically-related novels, or make up a new story about a related ancestor or descendant. Make Shogun an interconnected anthology series and it's GOLD.
@jonfreeman96827 ай бұрын
Well keep in mind TV shows are a business to bring in viewers and subscribers so if fans show up you wanna keep churning out a show to see how long it goes. A lot of shows keep going like walking dead which ran for 11 seasons before ratings fell too low it needed a reset so now it's a shorter 6 episode run to tighten stories. Game of thrones ran like 9 seasons and ratings were still strong but it was getting repetitive. So as long as they can come up with great stories and keep viewership high then it's okay to run more seasons. Most shows run outta steam 3 to 5 seasons in though. I think Shogun can easily run 3 seasons with more stories to tell but the book itself wasn't a multi volume series. It was just one book. Though a new writer could add more stories to continue the adventures of John Blackthorne.
@ICU13377 ай бұрын
@@VictorDiGiovanni I agree with a lot of this and its why I stop watching a lot of shows. Too many shows, its clear that they had a *great* story that pulls you in but its just a 1 maybe 2 season story that now they're stretching out for as much as they can milk... The only tv series I can think of that actually showed that they had a clear direction for multiple seasons was _Babylon 5._
@VictorDiGiovanni7 ай бұрын
@@jonfreeman9682 I suppose it just depends on what you think the role or purpose of a TV show is. If you just are happy that a TV show is on the air and able to fill up 30 minutes or an hour of your time once a week indefinitely, or if you are more concerned that a TV show is able to keep that group of people continuously employed for a decade, then six to ten seasons is exactly what you want. My personal desire is to experience a TV show that tells a complete story, with a definitive and planned beginning middle and end, without dragging it out. I want the best possible presentation of a story. I don't just want more of it. I realize that for the vast majority of TV watchers, these shows are just comfort food, something they can put on and relax and just allow it to entertain them and spend an hour with characters they find pleasant or interesting. From his reaction, I get the feeling that Gin (the mistress of the Willow World) guessed correctly about Toranaga concealing his real plan. My guess is Toranaga's Edo force is on it's way to save him, but he couldn't say anything to anyone because if his plan was known he would be executed on the spot. Remember he already had a system of communication that didn't need the roads and went to his other home, so it could get past his brother's perimeter. So it seems logical to think he would prepare for a few contingencies. If his brother had joined him he would have sent a message for his army to join them for the assault, but if it was a betrayal the force would be ordered to ambush his brothers forces, especially since he would have "surrendered" and they wouldn't be expecting to face opposition. It's why he said he would give his answer the next evening, meaning they wouldn't leave till the next morning... it gave a full day and a half for the message to arrive, for the edo force to prepare and sneak a march on his brother's force. With his brother thinking he won and that Toranaga was going to go peacefully, no idea the Edo force was on the move and no one knowing the true plan... It would have been the perfect surprise... Unfortunately Yoshii was too rash and too desperate to prove himself... While I don't think it spoils the whole plan, it certainly now puts it in danger since his uncle will now be on high alert and will have no faith that Toranaga will now go peacefully.

It was already said earlier in the show that approaching Osaka directly, as in a Crimson Sky style attack, was suicide. That's why Toranaga got Blackthorne to prepare the men for artillery. This is just a means for Toranaga to get closer to Osaka under the guise of surrender. Either his brother is secretly allied with him, or the Christian Japanese trading with the Portuguese are. If it is his brother, they could not risk allegiance in the open for fear of spies reporting to Osaka. We'll see. One thing is for sure. Toranaga knows how to make lemonade.

Toranaga has a plan, and I think Blackthorn's theatrics during Toranaga's "surrender" are part of it. Blackthorn's overly dramatic exit from the meeting paints a picture that he wants nothing to do with Toranaga and his comrades. Out of sight, out of mind... However, Blackthorn told Toranaga "he was ready for whatever their fate may bring". I believe Toranaga made Blackthorn part of his plan, likely relayed through Muraji, Toranaga's spy in the village (who speaks English). This way it's kept a secret from everyone including Mariko. I imagine Blackthorn will pop up with cannons blazing as Toranaga is being led back to Osaka. Or at least I hope so.
@peterbuckmaster5817 ай бұрын
I'm guessing something similar. The scene with Toranaga and the tea house mama-san (her stick of time) makes it clear Toranaga is not doing what he seems to be doing. And it's always been strongly hinted that Toranaga is a brilliant strategist so I reckon he has the upper hand here (except for the loss of his son, which was obviously not part of the plan). I agree Blackthorne is in on it and that will be the ace up Toranaga's sleeve. What I'm not sure about is the brother. He came with his army. Is he in reality allied with Toranaga and will switch sides at the right moment? If so, Nagakado's death is truly tragic as it is born from his father's unwillingness to share his plans. Good point about Muraji. The quick exchange between Blackthorne and Muraji could well be the signpost to this. Sanada Hiroyuki and Anna Sawai are brilliant in every scene. To be honest, the majority of acting is top-notch.

The thing is, if they wanted to do a second series of this, there's more than enough historical materiel to work with plot-wise. A second season could include the conspiracies of the Christian daimyo, Tokugawa's eventual decision to outlaw Christianity, and the Sakoku Edict that closed off Japan to most foreigners, as well as the further exploits of William Adams/John Blackthorne. A really pivotal time period in history, and one deserving of more than one season in my opinion, no matter how excellent this series has turned out to be so far.

True, lots of “history of medieval Japan” documentation & Japanese movies already done years ago. But THIS mini-series is an adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, “SHOGUN”. It was a screen play written to be a mini-series of 10 episodes, and in following the book generally, ends in the aftermath of the big battle.

I believe Toranaga is based on real history of Tokugawa Ieyasu, if that's the case, yes, He supposed to be a cunning or schemer type of leader. There is a popular way to describe 3 unifiers of Japan, if 3 of them given a song bird, Oda Nobunaga will say "Sing little bird, if not you will be killed" Toyotomi Hideyoshi will say "sing little bird, if not I will make you sing." @matts66077 ай бұрын
This show is building up to an epic battle. I have never read the book or watched the original show so my theory is probably wrong but here it is : My thoughts: Toranaga and his brother are doing theater. it's a ruse. Reason being, Toranaga knows that Yabushige is toying with both sides and Toranaga NEEDS him. Toranaga definitely KNEW his brother took his spot on the council prior to the visit. The spy in the camp is a carrier pigeon messenger. So he had to know about what was going on in Osaka. There was a scene that panned to Toranaga's spy in the village bowing before Toranaga's brother. So in my opinion this was a ruse to get Yabushige on his side but it kinda failed since Nagakado AGAIN became brash and suffered the consequences. Tornanga talked to him about being brash and took away his rank but apparantly he didn't learn. I believe that Tornanga needed a way into Osaka and knew Crimson Sky was a lost cause. Toranaga's plan was to go into the castle and he and his brother would destroy the council from within. now that is all lost cause they will have to reveal the plan. Toranaga was scribing his last will as he should in case the plan didn't work. The Lady of the Willow World was 100% spot on, which is why he gave her the land to do as she pleases but chastised her to keep his ruse intact. Edit in : one part in the show that was pretty important was at the dinner after the dialog about Toranaga shitting his pants as a kid and when Saeki revealed he was made part of the council, he presented a decree directed at Nagakado to commit seppeku. When he reached for it, his father yelled at him not to touch it. If he had touched it, he would have had acted upon it. Taking the letter was acceptance. Toranaga snapped at him not to take it. This was another lesson I think he was trying to teach his son. Also a test to see how his son would react.

Toranaga son's death was so tragic, especially the part where he brought upon himself. Thing is his whole life he's heard of his father's larger than life tales (in which many are exaggerated as we learned about how he cut off the heard of that general at his ninth attempt). The boy built up this image of what a great man is in his mind and keep trying to impress the impossible. This is why we see many great ruler failed at passing on their legacies; they usually spoiled their child or leave them cold.

Nagakado is so pity but he played a role in unwittingly helping Toranaga's strategy twice. If rumors spread in Osaka that "Nagakado died trying to kill his uncle," what could be more advantageous than not exposing the strategy of his uncle Saeki and Toranaga?! While I've been enjoying the series. Nagakado's demise is clumsily written. He died because he slipped and hit his head on a rock? This isn't a comic book. I speculate that Toranaga adds onto his will for the tea house because they suspect he is hiding more than he is showing. I bet reinforcements are coming from Edo.

I agree. This is one of the best shows on TV. They've done a great job of showcasing & honoring Japanese history. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful. I've been watching each episode twice. Once in english dub & then with Japanese subtitles. I can't get enough. ❤

I’ve read the book, I know how this ends and I’m still twisted in knots each episode.

I see two possible scenarios: He uses being "escorted" into the castle as a disguise to really attack once inside. Possibly with soldiers also attacking from the outside, to keep the defenders busy and confused. Or his brother is even in on the plan and supposed to "escort" him into the castle and then strike together. The attack of his son is unfortunate, but cannot be helped, but at least makes the ruse even more convincing. Ishidos spies will tell him that Torunaga surrendered and called of crimson sky. But what if this is crimson sky?
