That was so. This strange scene is synchronized with the Shogun in 2024. If the original novel is written like this, no amount of Sanada-san can fix it. The strange things are (1) what she is trying to do is jigai(suicide), not seppuku. Seppuku was a method of death that was allowed only to men of the samurai class, and kaishaku(assistance a person in committing seppuku by cutting off his head) were added as assistants to take away some of the pain of seppuku, so they cannot be kaishaku when women commit suicide. Seppuku was considered an honor for the samurai, as it was a form of showing one's belly, where one's soul resides, and dying bravely. Therefore, women should not and cannot do it. She doesn't die gracefully because if she actually cut her belly open, her intestines will pop out due to the pressure of her stomach, making her look quite grotesque. Later, during the peaceful Edo period(1603-1867), it was simplified, and a wooden dagger or folding fan was placed on sanboh(small wooden offering stand) in front of the person, and the moment he tried to take it, the kaishaku-nin(second at seppuku) cut off his head, resulting in a situation not much different from beheading. (2) It is very disrespectful to upper-class women if the place of jigai is outside in the garden. Additionally, only one or two people can act as the coroner, so there is no need for many people to be present. It's fine in the guest room. (3) In the case of a woman committing jigai, the literature says to stab her in the heart or her throat, but it is not easy to die from her throat. Once again, having watched the next episode of the 2024 version of Shogun, this dirty craft with a pretense of being epic, I understand what a masterpiece was the 1980 Shogun miniseries. There you can see the actors' emotions who did not acted; it was as if they really lived through their parts. Marico's seppuku in 1980: We saw that Mariko was a real and feeling woman, she fainted, Blackthorn almost cried seeing this, finally took her in his arms. Something that is absolutely absent in the 2024 version. There are only soulless robots in the frame. Again, in the modern version there is no love, there is only sex, which Blackthorn has with Mariko, after the latter’s interrupted seppuku. If in 1980 we see how Blackthorn is nervous, watching Mariko’s preparations for death, in 2024 this is not the case, he is coldly ready to cut her head off! What a love, huh! Everything is somehow mechanical or manufactured, Mariko in 2024 is not a woman, but a f**king T-800 terminator. Personally, I would sleep all night after such a psychological stress of a failed seppuku, but not make love. But this Mariko-machine doesn’t care, with an emotionless expression on her face, she tries to break through the row of Ishido-sana’s samurais and kill herself and with the same expression on her face she makes love with Blackthorn! It is as is they ripped the "soul" out of Shogun, and are just showing frame. I could not believe when Mariko 2024 chose Blackthorne 2024 to be her second?
