Shohei once said he was going to join Dodgers when he graduated Highschool but he ended up playing for Japanese professional baseball that resulted in increasing baseball fans in Japan…. His focus has been always passion rather than money. He has made so many choices over money for years and that is one of many reasons he is loved and respected so much by Japanese. Dodgers has been scouting him since 2012 and it was Shohei’s long term dream to join the team since he was little boy.

Well I am Japanese but American at heart lol and the first place I landed was LA and ever since I watched LA vs NYC back in 1978, I have followed LA (at peanuts from a selling guy who threw a bag of peanuts better than any pitchers lol) now I’m glad he is playing for LA Dodgers. As a Blue Jays fan this one stings, I really hope the Blue Jays front office can find a hidden gem where a certain player completely changes the landscape of the MLB. Major League Baseball is so one-sided, the big names either go to the Yankees or Dodgers. But honestly, this doesn't guarantee anything for the L.A. Dodgers. If you prorate the past 3 MVP caliber seasons hes played into this mega contract, its not too ridiculous to be paying him this amount. Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander get paid $40-44 million per year. And all they do is pitch. Ohtani won't be pitching in 2024 but he generates so much endorsements for himself and MLB. So really its a 13 year $700 million contract. $700 million ÷ 13 years = approximately $54 million per year. His endorsements and tv deals and viewers from Japan will cover atleast half his contract already, if not more. ⚾️ 🧢

A lot of the money was deferred past the 10 year period- up to 20 years. This was done to reduce the Dodgers taxes and Shohei to have strong income post retirement. The present value is probably closer to a regular 10yr/450-475m contract.
