I love what you took from this song. I think we're all guilty of just going with the flow and allowing things to happen to us rather than making conscious choices of what we want. I have a friend who has a shared love of this song and whenever I see her and ask how she is doing, she does that little karate chop motion down her arm from this video to indicate "same as it ever was". Great take!! I've always thought about it the same way. Life goes by so fast, and sometimes people just do what's expected of them. All of a sudden it's like 'Who am I? I lived my life like a robot, just letting everyday pass me by. What have I done???' Could explain his robotic moves. I've actually met him a few times. He'd ride his bike to where I worked in NYC. He was always very sweet and polite and a little shy. Such a cool dude!!

The lyrics and delivery of the verses are deliberately evocative of Southern Baptist preachers, who were huge on AM radio in the late 70s. So you called that correctly. it's catchier than you might thik, though. You say you won't listen to this song again, but it's not only an earworm - it's a damn banger. I DJ'd for years and it was a floor-filler in any context. And at the time of its release, it was played on R&B radio and spun by Hip-Hop DJ's. It was also sampled by a few Hip-Hop acts in the 80s and early 90s. I mean, think about it... That bassline and beat are totally inspired by the AfroPop of legends like Fela Kuti and Fema Kuti, and his rhythmic speech was lumped in with early Rap for many, because of its context, which was a polyglot brand of Art Rock that married the social commentary of Punk with the ass-shaking qualities of Funk. And speaking of Funk, Talking Heads would go on to collaboirate with Nona Hendryx and members of Parliament Funkadelic.

I take this song to be partially about the Heideggerian concept of "thrownness" (geworfenheit); the feeling that you've been thrown into a world which you don't and cant understand, from which you feel somehow alienated or as the song asks "well; how did I get here?" and in the meantime your life is flowing by, whether or not your find out where that highway goes to.

Hi Shon. I really like your reaction videos. You're like the friend everyone loves to show cool stuff to just to get that amazed reaction. I love all of the Talking Heads hits including 'BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE', 'AND SHE WAS', 'CROSS-EYED AND PAINLESS' and 'LIFE DURING WARTIME'. I put the Talking Heads in the same 'new wave' category with DEVO and The B-52s'. You should react to their big hits along with the CURE (Grinding Halt), Adam Ant (Stand & Deliver) and Blondie (Heart of Glass). I also suggest trying some offbeat 60s & 70s songs like FLASHLIGHT, DISCO DUCK, DOUBLE DUTCH BUS, AMOS MOSES, DOUBLE BARREL by Dave and Ansel Collins, Monkberry Moon Delight by Wings, OUTA SPACE by Billy Preston...and JUNK FOOD JUNKIE. Just a thought... All of the reaction videos I've seen sample a lot of the same novelty and big hit songs but no one has thought to try reacting to obscure song videos with views under 100. I've found some obscure stuff that virtually no one has seen plus really weird music videos from the strange side of KZbin. Ask your viewers to send you some odd ducks and you'll find a wealth of crazy stuff to react to. There's some weirdies out there that honestly are fascinating but most people, ten seconds in, will go "OH HELL NAW!". 1. QUENTIN AND HIS BIRDBOX ORCHESTRA FEATURING HIS 18TH CENTURY HAND TEACHER. 2. ADAVI DONGA SONGS; Idhi Oda Nandanavandan 3. JUNGLE FEVER by the Chakachas. More later... Thanks for being there Shon.

He specifically was influenced by old school preachers for this song, so you're on track. Generally, Talking Heads lyrics don't make much sense. It's more about the general sounds and the beat. David Byrne is very unusual. I think it's fairly safe to say he's not neurotypical. I say that with a lot of admiration.
