Anotherverse Dragon is the latest prize card and it is for sure a badass looking dragon. It reminds me of Serpent Night Dragon in a way. I think Konami should print the old normal monsters from the early OCG sets that never carried over to the TCG as prize cards such Black Dragon Jungle King, Sea King Dragon or Job Change Mirror. Everybody would be Ok with that for sure.

Damn, using such cards in video games back then felt so magical to me. Most of them were released FAR too late here in Korea. Even the original japanese versions had too much price since they usually come from random gift cards in books, game soft and its guidebook, etc..

During the Crush Card Virus section he mentions how expensive the game was getting. Keep in mind that Dark Armed Dragon was a $4 Rare in OCG but a severely short printed Secret Rare that went for around $300 in TCG.

I always have had the feeling that Konami uses the trends in OCG tournaments (to see what cards are used heavily) to inform what rarity they choose to make those cards in the TCG. Idk, maybe this is old news anyway, but that always seemed like one of the business strategies they use.

Cyber-Stein was in one of the first OCG starter decks, alongside BEUD and megamorph. It shows just how many OTKs there were in the pre-TCG OCG that anyone thought that was OK.

What I always found weird is that Dark End Dragon and Light End Dragon are main deck effect monsters from the GX manga. But for whatever reason, they became synchros when they got turned into real cards.

Pokemon TCG has a similar prize card problem with Tropical Beach. It was a prize for the 2011 Championships and has the fantastic effect of letting you draw until you have 6 cards in hand instead of attacking each turn. They haven’t printed a good championship card since, but also haven’t reprinted Tropical Beach or an equivalent card. Tropical Beach barely squeaks into Expanded to this day, so it is a sought after card. To the point there were eBay listings for the *TCG Online* copy going for over $50.

I remember that shit back then. That’s why I was reluctant to play any evolution pokémon in the BW and XY format because most competitive elitists would tell me I needed to play 2-4 Tropical beach (along with the 4 N and 4 Sycamore) if I wanted to play Stage 1 and Stage 2 cards. Also I think TB 2011 lets you draw until you had 7, not 6.

I was kinda active in spanish nationals for a while and I've seen some of these prize cards personally. An old friend of mine spent A LOT to buy Des Volstgalph. Another went to a (I think) YCS and came back with Crush Card Virus and a Stardust Divinity replica. And in one national there was a major fuss because someone stole the Gold Sarcophagus from a player.

What has always bugged me about Dark End Dragon is the fact it is a Synchro monster, since it appearted in the GX manga as an effect monster and is meant to be the dark half of Light and Darkness Dragon.

Fun fact about Crush Card, I can't remember what pre-release it was, but it was the one where the booklet you got had exchange of the spirit, a few of them and I mean a very very few of them actually had Crush Card virus. I don't remember if they did this with Gold Sarc as well but I remember hearing they did. Sorry this old man's memory isn't want it used to be.

"Supposed short printing" GLD1 Crush Cards were regularly exchanged for 300USD. I actually sold 2 for $500 in cash a week before the banlist that killed TeleDAD was announced when I quit the game back then. Very different times.

I was in highschool when Dark Armed Dragon was released, the arrival of the Synchros and the dominance of the Gladiator Beasts and Lightsworns. What an era! Though I was confused because it took too long to Konami to release Crush Card Virus considering it was a card that was in the anime and it also was available for play in the OCG since 1999 iirc.

Yes I was also in high school at that time and didn't critically think about how they do their reprints or about the prestige prize cards carried as the only copies and wondered why it took ages for crush card to get a print for everyone but also thought about gold sarc a lot because I was used to it in the games.

and then after that, YCS prize cards had included Number 106 Giant Hand and Minerva, the Exalted Lightsworn. Each was worth thousands. Giant Hand was a strong component of the Rank 4 Toolbox and a single copy would be passed between friend groups to be borrowed for tournament use right up until Duelist Alliance. Minerva was the critical piece of a Lightsworn deck that would have been a tier 1 deck alongside ABC and Majespector in the period before Invasion: Vengence

Some players say dark end dragon shouldn’t be allowed in edison since almost nobody had access to it since it was a prize card. It almost doesnt matter anyways since dark end isnt a generic synchro most decks cant make it anyways except dark monsters like caius/chaos sorc/malicious+ lvl 2 tuner like plague spreader. Or gorz+lvl 1 tuner like white stone of legends. Or a blackwing deck

Here's an idea for an episode of Failed Catds and Mechanics: the Duel Terminal 1 archetypes by which I mean the archetypes mentioned in the storyline before Sophia makes her appearance. Most were unviable and a few still are despite some added support. The biggest issue many had at least in the beginning was a complete lack of dedicated S/T support. Hell, it may make for a few episodes

I don't envy Konami for needing to balance a game where 90% of the time both players will want to draw 100 cards, activate 100 effects and OTK without counterplay if there is even the slightest opportunity. How do you retrain such a playerbase to appreciate grindy back and forth games?

Just don't balance the game poorly in the first place. But really, there's probably no easy way to do that without alienating at least half the remaining fans. I'd release retrains of stuff that maybe could come off the banlist, stop with the constant powercreep, hit the broken stuff (like Bystial/Runick/Superheavy/etc), and put a stop to the scapegoating of archetypes.

I don't think I ever knew what Crush Card Virus did until now lol the anime was totally different, and the only time I ever played it was in Duelist of the Roses where it was a field spell. Honestly it'd be cool if it was just a field spell, that destroys all 1500+ face-up monsters on the field. Give it a three turn limit, I suppose, but the one-sided-ness of the card as it is seems too powerful for a single discard/tribute.
