One Piece is actually a no; I wasn't able to get into back in the day when there was only 200 episodes. Jared Cassidy If you read the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga, it is extremely dark. Kaiba hires someone that tore ten children to shreds to try and kill Yugi. The Shadow Games are dark as hell. The punishments even more so. A kid literally gets his soul eaten by dragons.

I'm not sure if Yugioh holds up without nostalgia behind it. I love how corny and absurd it gets, but that's because I was watching it as a teen. If Deathnote isn't your thing, Assassination Classroom might not be for you either. As for sport anime; for someone coming off battle Shonen I'd suggest starting with Hajime no Ippo. It's a boxing series done by someone who really knows what they're writing about.
