Recently Film Ferrania in Italy released their latest P33 Black and White Film and I had three rolls to play with. In this video I also feature the Olympus OM-20 SLR Camera from the 1980s whilst pondering why that camera was underrated compared to the OM-10.

Just a minor correction, Canon AE-1 is a shutter priority camera. I believe it can do full manual as well.

@@geofff6671 yes of course. But we were talking about an aperture priority only camera. Which the AV-1 is. 🙂 I have the absolute beast of FD Cameras, the Canon New F-1. Great Camera. The A-1 has the advantage of being a smaller and way lighter camera than the F-1.

I bought an OM2N when it was introduced. It was recommended by the camera shop dealer over a Canon I was looking at as it had OTF metering, which was the most advanced at the time. I'd got out of photography for 20 years until I found the OM2N in a box in the roof space couple years back. Found out I could still get film and started to develop my own too. Had to replace the light seals and the original 50mm lens was full of fungus but got a replacement on eBay very reasonably. I also bought another OM2N as a spare as it was going for a bargain. It still works perfectly and the viewfinder is amazing, another reason the dealer recommended it. Photography has made a resurgence in my life and have added several cameras to the collection including a few medium format, plus digital for colour and now do it as a side hustle to my day job. The OM2N would still be the first camera I lift for it's small size when doing the likes of street photography etc. It's still an excellent camera. Great video.

My first 'proper' camera was an OM10 bought on my honeymoon in VAT-free Jersey. It was 1982 and I remember paying 85 sobs which included the 'manual adapter'. Fantastic camera.

P33 is my new favorite. It's much more of an all-around film than P30. I process in Rodinal 1:50 for 11 minutes, with very gentle agitation for first minute, with a few seconds of gentle agitation every 2 minutes. This will greatly control the contrast. Giving highlights and shadows with loads of detail.

Thanks. I went with Rodinal 5 mins 1+25 and got thin negs, so upped it to 10 mins and got better negs. Luckily my thin negs were a small strip test!

I shoot the OM-1n, 2n, and 4T. They are all great cameras. Those M mount lenses are terrific and so nice and small. For aging eyes, the OM-1(n) and OM-2(n) viewfinders are amazingly big and bright, making manual focusing a breeze.

Bought an OM20 as a Xmas present from Debenhams in Gloucester the year it was released, still have the receipt somewhere too. Debenhams has now gone, but I still have a working OM20. Added the OM Winder 2, T32 Flash, Tokina 25-50mm F/4 and Tokina 50-250mm F4/5.6 accessories in subsequent years. An ideal combination for motor sport and aviation at the time.

For the light meter … the manual advises for both the LR44 and the SR44. Reading online the size is the same but the voltage is a tight higher for the SR44 (and they last also longer). Maybe the problem is related to the battery output (like when you use an adapted LR44 battery on a camera that requires mercury batteries). You can try with the sr44 batteries and check if the reading will becomes correct

I had a very jittery light meter, values jumping all over the place. Went away after i excercised the exposure compensation dial vigoriously for 2 minutes. Problem pops up every time the camera hasnt been used for a couple of months. So far wiggling the exposure compensation has sorted that out.

Is still something that has more than 20 years… the simple fact that they still somehow works is amazing. I hope that soon the possibility to repair this kind of mechanisms becomes of easier access thanks to the internet and this film photography renaissance ☺️

I have an OM2N and it has possibly the brightest and best viewfinder ever, and a fantastic metering system. The only exception in my personal opinion is the Pentax MX.

Speaking of Pentaxes, Pentax ME users will fight you on the question of which is the smallest full-frame film SLR. I'm told by those with a vested interest that the ME just beats out the Olympuses, but there's so little in it as to make no practical difference and the ME, being an Aperture Priority only camera, is less flexible.

Back in the 1970's I had an Exakta Varex VX, followed by a Pentax MX. I still have both of them. Olympus OM seemed to really appeal to young women, who would buy one before going to the UK for a year or two. It was seen as a good travel camera. Vietnam vets often chose Canon. They would buy them in Saigon when on leave. Young males back home seemed to gravitate toward Pentax, and of course professionals who could afford it, bought Nikon. I could only afford a Pentax. It was my first new camera. Cheaper than Nikon or Olympus. I can't remember Canon pricing. They weren't so common back then. I knew plenty of people shooting Pentax and Nikon, but rarely saw Olympus other than the Pen half frame cameras. They were very popular. But the cameras we saw the most were Pocket 110 cameras. They were everywhere, as were the Instamatics shooting 126 film. The only surviving photograph of my first car is a square Instamatic shot from 1973, of my lime green Mini van.

The OM10 was my very first 35mm camera and I loved it. To improve the handling fit the OM winder2 it makes a world of difference to the balance especially wit the longer lenses. I now have the OM1n, OM2sp and the incredibly power hungry OM4 and a arsenal of lenses and macro kit. I have just started shooting analog again after a break of 20 years. Now looking to go down the pinhole path simply for fun. Love the channel, stay negative. cheers

The light meter is "jittery" because of how sensitive it is. Same reason why some can't stand the Pentax MX which has a super sensitive meter and stresses some over their exposure.

Thanks for this, very useful. I've just bought a very tidy Olympus OM20 and got my first film (Kodak Ultra 400) back and am pleased with the results. OM10 gets all the attention but the OM20 has a few nice improvements.

I have or have had all the Oly's over the years, and the two I use now are the OM-4 and the OMG (OM-20), and really, the OMG/20 with the little added grip is the one that just keeps on working and is a joy to use.

The OM20 (OMG [sic] in North America) had one of the shorter runs of the OM series. It also came out at the height of proliferation of the OM system. For a couple of years in the 1980's you could choose from the OM-1n, OM-2SP, OM-3, OM-4, OM20, OM30, or OM40! The OM10 and OM-2n had been recently discontinued, but I suspect a lot of inventory was still floating around in camera stores. Overall, it's a very nice enthusiast grade camera. Not in the upper echelon with contemporaries like the Pentax ME Super (roughly the same features, but a 1/2000th shutter speed and all-metal construction) or the Minolta XD-11 (ditto all metal, full SAM and pseudo P shooting modes). But because of the built in manual mode, I'd rate it much higher than the OM10 in terms of value. And of course anything that can mount Zuiko lenses and meter accurately (and the OM20 did feature Olympus' dead accurate OTF metering) is going to make amazing pictures!

My dad main reflex for many years and the camera that most of our holidays and family time was shoot on is an OM-20. I also learned and started loving photography thanks to it. Is not much used now but still going strong. For me is a really good camera with nice ergonomics and good looks, with a nice viewfinder and definitely reliable. What else would an enthusiast of the time wanted? Definitely worth getting one.

My first experience of slr cameras was back in the late 80’s I did a night course in film photography & darkroom printing. The camera the gave us to use was the OM2 which I loved using. After the course finished I bought myself a Nikon FE & it came with 3 prime lenses. A 50mm 1.4, 35mm 2.8 & a 135 f4. I’ve still got them & use them from time to time.

I bought a cheap OM-40 which "didn't work; mirror stuck" (which just means it needs batteries) when my usual camera was out for repairs. I really liked it, and I really liked the LED display in the viewfinder. It was easier to see than the LCD I was used to. As far as batteries go, I've read everywhere that it's SR batteries (silver oxide) rather than LR (alkaline) for OMs for the voltage stability.

I was heavily into the OM system when it was in its 'pomp'. OM1, OM2, OM10 with quite a few of the lenses too. OM1 and 2 had stunning viewfinders and a quality feel. OM10 was very 'plasticky' but good value and had one as a second body. By the time of the OM20 I moved fully to the 'metal' OM SLRs so I never even looked at one. OM4 and 4 were in another league for quality and price and I eventually part exchanged and moved on to Canon as Olympus seemed to lose interest in producing more advanced lenses. I re-purchased my OM system as nice 'knick knacks' for the shelf and they're on my shelf as I type this!

I really want to get an OM-1; I think they look quite beautiful. I really don't like that ridiculous adapter on the OM-10 so the 20 seems like the next best option for me if it's that much cheaper.

I had an OM10, then upgraded to an OM4, which I still have 30 years later. The 4 is so compact with a fabulous and clever spot meter, together with the crisp Zuiko lenses, an all round winner for me. If you get the chance, I'd recommend trying an OM with a spot meter, it's a different way of shooting.

I love the OM20. Lighter than the OM2 and the prism is so bright. It has a light meter and the Auto exposure is the best. It is better than the in modern mirrorless camera.

My dad's OM20 was my first film camera - shot on it a lot but after upgrading I'd never use it again for two big reasons. First is the lack of viewfinder information - can't see shutter or aperture info, so I had to keep taking the camera away from my eye to check settings which I found disruptive ... and second was that annoying shutter dial - you have to peer way over the prism see the setting. I know some people like it, but I consider it a huge design flaw that created a clunky experience for me in use.

My OM-2n doesn't work in AUTO either, but measures well manually. My OM-2000 works perfectly, (Cosina) but the viewfinder is darker. (This depends a lot on the lens of course). Having a Copal Square shutter is a bonus. .. In my experience Nikon's bodies have withstood the test of time better than other brands. Even the electronic models still work just fine. Enjoyed your video I have just purchased an OM 20 from eBay with a decent description also comes with 3 lenses of which 2 are still boxed I also have the OM1 and the OM10 back in the day I couldn't afford any camera and always liked the Olympus brands now I will have 3 when my OM20 arrives I enjoy shooting film and I currently use HP 5 PLUS FOR MY om1 AND KODAK 400 COLOUR FOR MY om10 I also have 2 Nikon DSLR cameras anyway I'm looking forward to shooting this OM20 after watching this video description of said camera.

My dad had an OM10, so I bought an OM40. He then bought an OM4ti, so I bought a Nikon F3, which I still have to this day. Typical father-son rivalry. Always rated the F3 over the OM4, but I would have to admit that the OM cameras were damned small and light.

Nice video, entertaining as ever. Unlike a Nikkormat with a nice big lever to adjuster the concentric shutter speed ring I never got on with the same system on the OM. It was far too small to get hold of especially in cold weather wearing gloves. My favourite was the OM4 Ti but being in love with the size eventually faded.

There also was an OM40 (I had one about 20 years ago), but the rubberized parts get sticky after all this time (as far as I remember, this was an issue). But the OM20 looks like a good, "easy-going" camera. Olympus lenses are a treat, but my experience with the bodies was not that good (lots of mostly mechanical problems that couldn't been reliably fixed even by a former Olympus technician).

John William Ishi has a You Tube channel and has been doing interviews with Mr. Woo, who was apparently a camera store operator back in the day. He has been telling the story of the different brands and showing his personal examples of their cameras through the years. Quite interesting stuff. He did do Olympus.

Before the OM1 there was also the Half Frame Pen F/FT/FV which were very popular in Japan. I weighed by OM1 and my FV the other day, and they are almost the same weight! I mostly use my om4ti, it's a tiny bit chunkier, but still pretty small. The lenses really are great, my main kit is the 28mm, 50mm, and 100mm. They are super compact, and carrying all 3 isn't too bad at all.

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I completely messed up that comment, THe last half about chunkier and the lenses was supposed to be about my 0M4ti. The FV is great. I have a 25mm,38mm, and 100mm (and a 20mm that's a bit too hazy). About 35mm,50mm and 150mm equiv. The 20mm would be a 28mm'ish. There is a 70, which would get me my beloved 100mm equiv, but it cost about 3 kidneys. The FV is a true SLR system, I even have macro tubes and an angle'd viewfinder for it (and I think they did bellows too). If you ever find an F or FV going cheap, I highly recommend. Great fun, especially for holidays. Biggest problem is that 72+ frames takes forever to shoot.

For your exposure issue, I strongly suggest of switch your LR44 for SR44. Because SR have better voltage stability than LR.

My Olympus OM20 belongs to my collection of small, lightweight, pleasing haptics, high perceived quality, and nicely designed cameras. It's easy to use and reliable, however, it doesn't feel like a pro- camera like a NIKON FE or CANON AE1.

I’ve got the OMG. Exactly the same as this but with the bonus it says OMG on the front! It’s been my favourite 35mm up to this point. The Olympus lenses are amazing. I also have a Pentax ME (previous favourite) and Nikon FG (shutter is too loud). I’ve just got hold of my uncle’s mint condition Canon AE-1 Program and also an A1 that I’m yet to shoot, so the Olympus has some strong competition.

Yes OMG was the North American version. I don't know why they did that back then. Like the Nikon FX90 is the N90. I made a video a few weeks back on the AE-1 Program. Nice camera.

I've a couple of OM10's and a OM20 and there great little cameras, but I've also an OM2 spot meter and it feels more robust than the OM10 ect but not as robust as the Nikon FE2 or F3. You should try out a Canon A1and it's wee brother the AE1 like Olympus there's some nice prime lenses that don't cost a lot. But I'm a bit of an old Nikon fan at heart and you should really try out the Nikon FA with all its bells and whistles.

I used Ferrania colour slide film a lot in the sixties and developed it in E-6 process it was fun and cheap but not reliable and sometimes with colour casts.

Wow. They only make B&W now. I've yet to try their Ortho film! I've never shot slide film. Although I have plenty developed slides packed away in a box from the 80s. And an old projector too! I must admit, they do look great on the wall!

I have used the OM system since 1975 and have several OM1's, 2's and 4's along with a large range of lens and other accessories that I have collected over the years. I have an OM10 with a 28-48 and a 75-150 zoom that when I was working as an archaeologist I would take onto site. The OM10 needs a CLA, but I may not do that and purchase an OM20 for the same price as the CLA for the OM10. Not that I would use it often as I use the other OM cameras

The OM20 is a lot like the Minolta X-570. It came out after the very popular Minolta X-700 and it kind of flies under the radar now. The X-700 is a very trendy camera that shoots manually, aperture priority, and in full auto Program Mode. It's a trendy entry point for people looking to get a good film SLR, almost like an alternative to the Canon AE-1 Program. But the X-570, which came out a couple years after the X-700, and shares the same chassis is, I think, the better camera. The X-570 has manual and aperture priority shooting, but does away with the full auto Program mode. The viewfinder on the X-570 is better than the X-700 too, because it has a readout that shows what your shutter speed is set to, and what shutter speed the meter thinks is properly exposed, plus it has a window for you to see the aperture setting on your lens. The popularity of the X-700 means it fetches higher prices too. On Ebay, in the U.S., the X-700 regularly sells for $150-200 with MD 50mm f/1.7 lens. While it's possible to find them for $100 or less, it's not the norm. However, the X-570 regularly sells for $50-100, often with the MD 50mm f/2 or MD 50mm f/1.7 lens. As someone who couldn't care less about full auto Program mode, I think the X-570 is where it's at. In fact, I bought one myself a couple years ago, in excellent condition (body only) for $50, and it's a joy to use.

I had an OM2 with an inaccurate light meter - turns out it is just the contacts in the shutter speed dial getting dirty over time which is a common fault - if you quickly rotate the dial clockwise then anti-clockwse a few times it cleans the contacts and has a good chance of righting the inaccuracies. Also, remember to remove the batteries after use - OMs are notorious for battery drain!

Great camera the OM 20 I got into the OM system then my pentax broke buying it cheap of a friend, liked it so much I got another om20 and got more lenses upgraded to a OM 4 ti and liked it so much I got another OM 4 ti , now it’s my go too camera being compact and lightweight compared to its competition

Went totally Olympus then. They are nice cameras. I guess they put everything they learned into their OM4 ti. I might keep an eye out for one in the future. Probably the Chrome :)

Cracking photos Roger. Can't wait to see what this new developer is? Olympus had some decent cameras as you mentioned and some really good glass. The problem was that they were expensive. To put it into perspective, Nikon F3 with a 50mm F1.4 Nikkor lens cost under £400.00 in 1980, an dthis was a fully fledged Pro camera with a pedigree like no other, with perhaps the exception of Leica M.

I remember when i was a kid in the early 80s gawping at the cameras in the camera shop. The Olympus was always behind a glass counter. And the neighbour opposite had an OM-10. He would occasionally take photos of us kids playing. Those negs are somewhere! And when I was a bit older my friend had an OM-10, she took some photos of me I remember. Didn't think much of it at the time Lensman. Must have cost them a fair few quid though!

They did, I am sure. Olympus also had some superb sub- compact ( for our American friends ) cameras like the XA. I think that they even hired the late Patrick Litchfield in the 80s to promote their 35 Trip and other models. I have a 35 RC and a 35 RD rangefinders. Brilliant little cameras, particulry the RD with its F-Zuiko F1.7 lens. The RC has the E .Zuiko lens, E means five elements and the F means six elements. They had a G Zuiko as well which I think was only used in the 35 SP. @@ShootFilmLikeaBoss

I'm pretty sure I told you earlier that I have my late cousin's OM2000 (and, yes, I know it isn't a real Olympus) with a wide variety of lenses and a T20 flash with a stand-off. I don't use it very often as it's pretty fiddly compared to my F100 and F80s (I have a few F80 bodies I picked up for less than NZ$30 each!). Having said that, after I broke my rangefinder (Fujica? The film advance was on the bottom and focus was a thumbwheel at the back, but this was the late 60s so my memory is a bit hazy.) I had a couple of Prakticas, so manual cameras aren't completely foreign to me. And the first two were bought on the advice of the aforementioned cousin from a recently defunct camera store in Palmerston North. Favourite film is FP4+.

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Yes, it looks, feels, and sounds very nice. It all depends what I'm photographing. If I'm at an event the time taken to focus and set the exposure can mean that I miss the moment. With the Nikons I have autofocus and can adjust settings without taking the camera from my eye. Plus I have TTL flash if required and can just set it in aperture priority mode. If I'm taking photos of static things, including posing people, that's not an issue and I can enjoy the OM2000 for what it is. Now all I need to find is a 50mm f/1.8 MC lens for the Praktica MTL5 to replace the one with a broken iris blade! 🙂📷

I’m an OM2N man. Never thought meter was out. Are the OM20 plastic bodied or still metal? As far as self timers, I never even try them with vintage cameras, as I think I have said before. Use a cable if you can. Self timer packs up midway through and you may be fckd as shutter can stay cocked, and then big possible repair job or use camera as an ornament. 🙄🙁 Good video as ever man 👍📸

Sorry to disappoint but that can of Halfords oil is modern. It’s 20w50 oil which is suitable for many classic cars, it’s just marketing design. 7:20

I have the Olympus OM10 and a Pentax ME Super and surprisingly the Pentax is smaller than the Olympus, maybe you should do a video on the Pentax also, as always another great video keep up the good work.👍

My very first camera that got me started in photography in the early 80s. Very underrated as you say. The beauty of Olympus was that the DOF lever was on the lens. Very ingenious design.

Sorry to correct you, but the Olympus OM-1 was NOT their first camera, nor was it their first SLR camera; that was the Olympus FTL from 1971. It had a short lifespan and was superseded by the OM-1.

Yes it's 160. I always go with the recommended rating when I haven't used a film much. Once I'm comfortable I can change it around with the developing to suit my own taste.

Hi Roger, I also love the fantastic Om range of cameras and lenses. I have only tried the single digit OM cameras, I have the M1, OM1n, and the OM4Ti. I like the simplicity of the M & OM1 and the OM4Ti has a great multi point spot meter so you can meter something like 7 or 9 areas and it works out the correct shutter speed to get the best exposure. I am on my first roll of p33 and will probably develop it in rodinol…. How are you finding James’s new developer?

Thanks for sharing. I am still experimenting with the developer. So far so good! It's a two part developer A and B with stain similar to 510 Pyro. I've had nice results with it so far, and of course my failures too!

I had an OM2n from new back in the early 80s. I can’t remember why I bought that over the OM10; maybe it had a better look or feel, or maybe I was just swayed by the marketing hype😂. I do remember that it was a good camera and I still have some slides from back then. I eventually switched to a Nikon F3..

You probably found your answer, but if you got a reasonably modern digital camera too I would guess the "dslr" method would probably be cheapest (paired with, idk, darktable for inversion+editing?), and probably the choice if you're only shooting 35mm. I scan with an epson v550 and the photos come out good for me, presently my photography skills are more limiting than the technical. I'm mainly using them for small prints + web posts so if you're looking to print big your mileage may vary.

OM20 > OM10, certainly, and OM20 > AE1 too. However, the OM-2N costs just a few quid more than the om-20, so I think that's a big reason the 20' doesn't get much fanfare. You don't really see the same situation with Nikon and Canon, where the Canon F1 / New F1 and Nikon F2 / F3 are typically *much* more expensive.

I had the camera set to auto and the flash set to 160 ASA and auto too at f5.6. I'm not a wizard with this flash but that seems to work for me. What you can do is experiment with it on a digital camera for whatever you want to fill in, (if you have one) and take those settings over to the OM-10 in fully manual. I did that once before I went to an event and i then knew my distance and aperture for people shots from a couple of meters away.

By the time the OM20 came to market, SLRs were all much the same, with none much better than others in the price range. Since almost everyone who wanted a 35mm SLR had one, there was not much interest in the newest Olympus. Like the Chinon, a fine camera that can be had for reasonable money today.

The Olympus system in general is an underrated system and not given enough credit. They revolutionized the size of SLR's... yes, they were the FIRST to come out with a small SLR with the OM1. Metering was top notch. Lenses were top notch and designed in a superior way. I think the OM-2n is one of the great cameras of all time. They unfortunately never got the credit or appeal of nikon or canon or pentax. By the mid to late 80's it was a different game... Nikon was arguably the best and Canon had the consumer market. That brief period of the mid 70's to early 80's you could make the point that it was all Olympus. And still one of the best cameras of all time.
