Call me old fashioned, but; this is what I call real photography. And; I think this old school photography requires more skill than the modern photography we see today.

I find it more challenging and enjoyable than digital and Photoshop. I know of many good photographers that started in the 80s with film and would loathe to go back to it. They actually refer themselves as "image makers" as apposed to "photographers". I find that interesting. Cheers Ian.

Hey, was wondering if their was a way to create that art paper look you can get from Hahnemuhle with torn edges but in a darkroom paper. Any thoughts and maybe a vid?. Wood look awesome as a Black & White printed image really accentuating the handmade quality look. cheers
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
You can buy fotospeed LE30 liquid emulsion and make your own style light sensative paper. With that bottle you can print a negative on many different objects.
@julianwilliams47504 жыл бұрын
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I suppose you could carefully tare darkroom paper to create a deckled edge.

@@julianwilliams4750 you could do, but it will look just as it is. Torn paper. I've never used that fotospeed emulsion but I guess it's fun

Wow, bit contrasty aren't they. Pulling the film, maybe ISO 80, and develop for 30% less time to cut back the highlights would have worked better. As Ansel Adams would say, expose for the shadows and develop for the highlights. A recipe that often doesn't fail. Nice shout out to Topshit Photography, I like his channel, maybe you can join him in Slovenia and spend some time in the woods on a collaboration video.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
Cheers Steve. You can see my video pulling film on my dog George. His first portrait was contrasty, so on the second portrait I pulled the shoot for less contrast and built contrast back up in the print. Not sure I can join Borut. They have bears there!
@lensman57624 жыл бұрын
Woodland photography is a very difficult subject and you have done well. There are a couple of nice compositions there. With a medium format camera there is no reason to use a medium or slow emulsion unless absolutely necessary or for specific reasons. FP4+ is actually quite a contrasty film if not handled correctly. I would have probably used a compensating developer rather than the DDX given the vast luminance range of the woodland. Your XTOl 1+2 would have probably tamed the highlights better than the DDX. None the less, you have some very nice results in the end.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I try all sorts for diversity on the channel and myself. Situation again? Probably a delta 400 pulled to 200 and as you say in XTOL at higher dilution (even though I'd have probably gone 1:1). Another comment mentioned pulling the FP4, maybe too slow for woodland unless I wanted some movement. There is so many variables in Film it's great to try it all out. Cheers!
@lensman57624 жыл бұрын
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss TBH, I am not a fan of pulling films without testing and without measuring densities. When I used to use FP4+ a long time ago, I found its true speed to be more like ASA 80 rather than 125 ( HC 110 Dilution H ). Another reason that you appear to be getting ' contrasty ' negatives is the enlarger that you use. It has a condenser head, condensers do make for a very contrasty print. With a Dichoric head the print contrast is reduced. I have an ancient British made cold cathode enlarger that I used to use for printing from 4X5 negs in my younger days. This one made very beautiful prints. It is now somewhere in my garage, poor thing.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
@@lensman5762 funny you mention the condenser. I was talking to a friend the other day about condensers and diffusers and how the condensers are quite harsh. I wonder if a stretched stocking would make a difference over the condenser?
@lensman57624 жыл бұрын
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I am not familiar with the ' light path ' of your enlarger but, is there a way of installing a piece of acrylic diffuser ? I am not sure how much heat stocking would take before melting though,LOL.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss4 жыл бұрын
@@lensman5762 I'll have a go and see what happens. I know I've used stockings over my lens before and contrast takes a dip on the print as well as softer focus.

I don't like red window cameras. I waste too many frames because of weak printing on the backing paper by many manufacturers. I use a 1957 Yashica Mat with a 75mm 3.5 Lumaxar lens which is incredibly sharp. I also have a Kiev 6c 6x6 slr with a 90mm 2.8 Vega lens. I use Kodak Trix. You got lost again? My goodness. ever heard of a map & Compass? they can take you too some great places to photograph, but if you get a hand held GPS, you can mark the position of the car so you know which way to go to get back to it , a lot of functions to spend your time on, so I stick with my map and compass ( I have like five compasses because folks keep telling me where to go but no compass points there)
