This was sooo much cooler than I had anticipated! When you laid down the basic beat, I thought, “Oh, it’s pretty a straightforward beat.” But there’s magic in those first two high hat ‘hits’, especially the “and” of 1. Dragging that close pedal put the biggest smile on my face. Another great lesson. Thanks, Shawn!

A lot of people are good at what they do, but they are terrible at teaching it. You sir are a great teacher and have a unique way to communicate these ideas that is clear and concise. It helps that your voice is easy to listen to for a long period of time. I appreciate these lessons. I didn't want to recreate this beat, but I did learn the hi- hat squelsh which is exactly something I wanted to know. So thank you, and keep up the great work.

Great to see how to work the grid editor and articulations to match what’s you hear in your head! /Walk This Way was a landmark song for getting into playing. A grade school friend’s mom took 8 of us (for his birthday) to see the ‘Toys In The Attic’ tour. #MindBlown

It would also be an idea to set the dot for the "closed pedal" AND the "closed edge" - it is possible for a real drummer. He closes the pedal with the foot und hit the HH with the hand. Yesterday listen in my car to "Best of U2" and had to think about your series while hearing "Sunday bloody Sunday" and "Bullet the blue sky" both are great beats from Larry Mullen Jr. - but I am not sure if "Sunday bloody Sunday" could be recreated in EZD

Keep it comin'. I happened to hear zeppelin's Boogie With Stu today and thought, "Shawn ought to do that one". Sounds like it ought to be crazy simple but I bet there's a little finesse in there somewhere. As always, thanks so much.

How do you decide when to use more or less kicks between the backbeats? Are there stylistic rules or is this just down to preference and taste? (Same question for when to use syncopation, but that might be a longer discussion for another time 😁)
@ShootieSchool6 ай бұрын
That's a tough question for a reply. You can safely add kick in many spots, but listen to how it makes the snare/hats feel.

A good drummer is 50% of a good rock song. It is hard to replace them with a computer, but people are finding it increasingly difficult to hear the difference on a smartphone. Sad but true

This isn't just a good tutorial for working with the grid editor and using articulations, but a really good lesson in how the subtle differences in a groove/beat that can really change the feel of a song. Great advice.
