Garrett you did a fine job on that. Today I own a 1873 rifle and a 1867(?) 60 something, and a 1880 dated on it barrel only (It was in a fire). I owned a H&R Custer Carbine that had been worked on and had a single set trigger I KICK MYSELF for selling it back in the late 1980s...bought it from my father in law who was a devout 19th cent shooter. I want another carbine. and a rolling block... just cuzz.....

I can only comment on mine: it was so so nice. Trigger work was by a legend gunsmith in New Mexico: Dempsey Milton. he was a genius and personal friend of my father in law. I was taken to his workshop once. Stock was great and the saddle ring looked fine

With the Battle of the Little Bighorn, for years I've heard how if Custer and his men had lever action rifles, things would have been different. Yep, Custer and those who died with him might have taken a few more of the Native American warriors with him, but in the end, the outcome was pretty much set. You're talking anywhere from 1,200-2,500 Lakota and other Native Americans versus 700 Cavalry and then when Custer split his command up, it got worse from there. The Sioux that had been fighting Major Reno then joined the Lakota that Custer was taking on, so he was taking on the bulk of the force the Native Americans had with only 210 men of his own command. Even if the Native Americans had nothing but single shot guns, it was just too many for Custer, he was surrounded with no where to run. Custer didn't have enough ammo for the guns he had to kill all the Native American warriors he was engaged with.

The Army was reducing their count. of horses at the time For a period of time After the Revolutionary way The only horses were ceremonial. I would say it was a Cavelry mod but the units were mix and match. Since the Harry Lee USC have been Dragoon units, Light cav in the South was Colt revolvers 6-8 coming out of the nite mist Screaming that yell, not long you have to be out of there before you run out of pistols.

Had Custer stuck to a more traditional role for cavalry of the day, (scouting) then awaited Cooks infantry, he would not be nearly as famous as he is today. No guts no glory, but the price was paid by his troopers. FREDRICKSBURG! BUFFALOS!

Found a sweet M1873 carbine on gbrker. Mfg date 1879, Mass. Corps of Cadets marked. Arsenal queen, probably didn't have more than 300 rounds through it. Some fool carved a mandela wheel in the stock so I got it pretty cheap. Other than that practically mint. Shoots like a dream.

When you say that the Springfield Trapdoor rifle is almost as fast as a repeater Henry, your not counting in everytime you reload the Springfield, you go off target and have to re-aim, with a Henry the rifle stays on target which is invaluable when under attack. And reloading a Henry does not take very long at all, maybe 30-40 seconds to load up 15 rounds. If I was going into battle at the Little Big Horn, I'd much rather have a Henry the Springfield rifle......

This won contract because of politics. This is one of the weakest "conversion era" firearms. Still neat.
@Real11BangBang Жыл бұрын
This is Ethan and I really don't have a dog in this fight but I will tell you this as a fighting rifle. I would 100% take the trap door over the rolling block or the falling block The reasons why are as follows in the 1870s. The trap door had automatic ejection. The rolling block and the falling block only had extraction. This removes one of the steps in the loading process, making it have a higher rate of fire and slightly more firepower. Also, I can't help but notice the very high bore axis on the rolling block. It's almost like what a lot of guys criticize the AK about nowadays where instead of a cheek weld you have to get a chin weld. And the trap door is actually not that weak of an action of all the explosions that everybody talks about the trapdoor having. There were only two that happened during trials and that was because they were using the 1865 trap door which did not have a spring on the latch and the action was not actually locked up. They fixed this and it never happened again during its time in military service. The trap door would be about on par with the Snyder and the Martini Henry would be better than both the trapdoor and the snider but that's just my opinion. Like I said I'm not a huge single shot surplus rifle guy. I just shoot them. And notice which ones I believe to be superior.
@turtlewolfpack6061 Жыл бұрын
@@Real11BangBang I just ment that from a design standpoint it was the weakest, has the poorest extraction as well when dirty, that wasn't ment to say it was the worst! It is a neat design and I wouldn't toss one out of bed.
