Today Joel shoots three different "entry level" precision rifles in order to answer the question: Can a person use an entry level rifle for long range shooting, hunting, and competition? How effective are they really?

I got one a few weeks ago, but unfortunately, had a problem with feeding. I got a few extra mags, so 4 total; all bergara composite 5-round. I tested hornady, Winchester and Remington rounds. The top round in the magazine fed fine. Starting at the 2nd or 3rd round, the cartridges got caught at the front tip/chamber interface. Some people call this nosediving, I guess. So, sent it back to the factory after calling them. They said they'd look at it and let me know. Anyone else have this issue? I made sure to set the rounds firmly against the back of the magazine, but it didn't help.

I thought the question of where the wind affects the bullet most is an interesting and seemingly simple question to answer. In cases with constant wind at the muzzle and the target, the bullet will mostly be affected at the target. Without going into too much detail... If we can simplify the question down, we can say that a constant force (wind) will accelerate something in the direction of that force at a magnitude of that force divided by the mass. (Newtons 2nd law of motion) The only difference between the bullet at the muzzle and the target is position and speed, and since the acceleration is a factor of time, we can say that the bullet will be affected the same at both points BUT, since the bullet at the target has a lower speed, the bullet will be affected more, because (in simple terms) it has more time to be accelerated in the direction of the wind.
@nathansmith5835
@nathansmith5835 2 жыл бұрын
That’s true but wouldn’t a small deviation in the bullets path caused by wind occurring at the muzzle throw the entire path of the bullet off? I.e if bullet path at the muzzle is deviated 1 degree in the say 50 yards after leaving the muzzle, over the course of the bullets flight that would equate to something like 17.5m at 1000 yards? (excuse my high school calculus, may be wrong, someone should double check that), even if that’s an extreme example it seems like a huge amount of path deviation for the downwind range to overcome to be more important

Had a Ruger Precision for a few years. Bought it because a custom was taking too long, as usual. Soon as the custom was done I sold the RPR. It's a fine rifle but it does not compare to customs, not because of any magical reason but because you get what you pay for. A Bartlien custom produced by a smith with a good shooter and some custom dies is simply unbeatable. I own quite a few higher end "box" rifles and really only Blasers and AI's can compete, but they are virtually identical to what you pay for a custom. For my money it's worth skipping the low end and saving for something that really can provide you with no excuses.

Definitely start out with a platform like the Remington 700, Tikka, or the Ruger Precision so you can upgrade in the future. Also, DO NOT skimp on the scope base, rings, and scope itself. Before you start upgrading barrels and customizing actions and bolt knobs and bipods etc.GET a SOLID optic for your rifle! I suggest taking your rifle, getting a solid scope on it first.. second, I'd get a match trigger like a Timney or Jewell. Then get it into a stock/chassis with an aluminum bedding block like the Magpul Hunter, HS Precision, McMillan, AICS, XLR etc. if your rifle came with a regular composite/overmolded/non-free floated stock. I'd wait to get the action blueprinted when you decide to upgrade/change the barrel. When you do this, consider the caliber you want to shoot long term, rifling in the barrel, twist rate, and obviously length. You may also want to get it threaded for a brake or suppressor or maybe you just want a nice target crown. After you have this system down, you can mess with different muzzle brakes, bipods, bolt knobs, etc.

If you can account for wind at all distances then obviously, that's the most perfect shot. However, with basic logic and BASIC understanding of physics, we understand that the SLOWER the bullet is travelling, the LONGER it is exposed to the specific wind value at that specific position in its flight. If we observe that the wind is the same at all ranges (e.g. Shooter's position, 100 yds, 200, and 300 yds) the bullet will be most affected at 300 yards due to loss in velocity - it is exposed to that wind value for the longest time when compared to shorter ranges. Do not take the following values literally, they are for illustration only. Wind at 600 yds: left to right 10mph Projectile velocity at 600 yds: 2000fps = Bullet is pushed 10 units to the right. Wind at 1200 yds: left to right 5mph Projectile velocity at 1200yds: 1000fps = Bullet is still pushed 10 units to the right. (given we don't factor in ballistic coefficient fluctuation of projectile when pushed to different velocities). These 2 examples are just illustrating what effect wind speed, and projectile velocity have on wind drift. Given all wind is the same at all ranges, we get exponential wind drift as the bullet slows, purely because it is exposed to those winds for longer.

What about savage too? they have the widest range of precision rifles out of all of the common manufacturers and are the easiest to swap to higher grade barrels (you can swap barrels at home without a gunsmith in less than 20 minutes) and don't need to be squared and blueprinted due to the floating bolt head. They also have a good aftermarket component selection ( after Remington 700). But out of the ones you selected damn that Bergara looks sweet!

The floating bolt head makes the bolt clunky, and very few competition shooters use prefit barrels as they inherently give up perfection in chambering. The magazines can also feed poorly. They work well for people doing it for fun and slow and steady but This is a group of people (prs) that are putting their equipment through extremes and won’t put up with a bolt that wants to catch or bind or misfeeds.

I say round 2 of this video should have a Savage model 10, i personally have an fcp-sr in 308 but even making it more comparable to these choices would be the tge BA stealth or the Ashbury. Love the video and I'm not criticizing but next video ideas maybe? Lol. Thanks and keep up the great vids

TheCspencer6687 I had an rpr,a stealth and a model 10T for 1000 rounds each. The 10T has a straight taper barrel and was the thickest of the 3 rifles. And it shot the best 10 round strings(1/2moa). The rpr couldn’t get better than 1moa for 10 shots. The stealth managed just over 1/2moa for 10 shot strings. The 10T was the least expensive and shot the best.

My rem 700 in .308 is like an old friend. I replaced the trigger and put a decent vortex scope on top. I can honestly say the rifle is more accurate than I am.

I’ve got a savage 10t Sr .308 extremely nice and crisp adjustable trigger, very solid stock and rings steel easy at 1000 with gmm 175. I’ve run the bolt extremely quickly over about 75 rounds, no issues. The one thing I would like to improve is the magazines, I wish it took ASICS but it’s an easy fix. Unfortunately for some people the accustock is awkward, but I’m a very tall guy so it fits me perfect.

A Ruger Predator 6.5 Creedmoor that I own shoots .5 MOA with cheap Hornady American Gunner 140gr. All I did to it was a trigger job on the stock parts. I Know of guys upgrading theirs with Indian Creek Design chassis and winning PRS matches, for less than the cost of a RPR...

I'm a little surprised with the lack of performance with the RPR. My son and I own them (matching rifles with matching glass) in .243 and 6.5CM and we're shooting sub 1/2 inch at 100 yards and sub 3/4 inch at 300. That with straight out of the box rifles with no modifications other than quality glass on top, shooting factory match ammo. I will say though that the 6.5CM RPRs like/dislike different ammunition. Neither will shoot identical brands of ammunition the same. But, as you said, sometimes with mass produced rifle you get good ones and sometimes you get bad ones. I'll also add the caveat that I'm a quadriplegic shooter, and I'm getting fantastic results (for me) with my RPRs shooting right shoulder/right eyed, but pressing the trigger left handed. Yeah, it's a weird concept, but it works for me :) I wish there were were a way to have an RPR that cycles the bolt right handed, but ejects left handed. It's very difficult for me to be able to observe the chamber on a right handed rifle. Thanks for another interesting video.

Great content! I absolutely appreciate the information (actually, the knowledge and wisdom) you convey, but your production value really sets you apart from many other channels. The footage, the editing, and your presentation style are certainly 1/4 MOA. Nice work.

The Bergara rifles for the money if you ask me are some of the best entry level PR's. The Tikka's are fantastic as well without question and it would have been nice to see them but like you said, you couldnt source one so that's ok. I feel the three you did display are generally speaking a good representation of what to expect from this category of rifle and the Bergara got excellent results in my opinion. Like last time, despite me not really having the money for such a rifle or the space/distance to shoot with one it definitely is interesting and entertaining to watch.

DLN1234 1 second ago I don't understand why yardage is a problem with accuracy ? Shoot lower cal. rifles and accomplish the same result. 200 yards with .22 lr puts a hole in the paper just like a .338 lepua @ 1000 yrds does.

T3x TAC A1 in 6.5 shoots 1/2 moa all day long with Hornady 120gr. ELD's. In fact, it shoots as well, a little slower perhaps but as consistent as my AIAX (with a Krieger 6.5, courtesy of R. Gradous) for 1/4 of the price of the AI which pisses me off beyond believe! She deserves a review more then any "entry level" rifle I ever seen.

I bought a axis for fun in .223 and it shot factory under a .3 group at 100 yards.. I was blown away. I sold it then bought another one later, it couldn't get under a .5 group. I guess I got lucky the first time when the rifling tool was new lol

Given the great quality of tikka and bergara , is it worth buying a custom rifle? For instance, I handload and I want a 300 mag of some sort. Should I spend 1600 on a bergara hmr in 300prc or 4k on a custom 300 weatherby? As a hand loader being able to make accurate loads for either it just doesn’t make sense to get a custom gun
