LOVE the photo of dude doing the puzzle but looking at that and thinking like wow, I would love to feel safe enough to where i have my garage open and I’m doing a puzzle with my back towards the street. What a vibe

I’m an urban forester and live in the heart of LA. My job consists of walking around neighborhoods all over the city to inspect trees. You’re completely right, LA is not a pedestrian friendly city, but my job has made me fall in love with walking around random neighborhoods. I’ve thought about bringing my film camera around with me a couple times and this definitely inspires me to go for it.

I'll be flying to LA next week to go on exchange for six months (my first time in the US!) and I'm really excited to go around exploring and wander around the city and its different neighborhoods on foot and by bike as I don't have a driver's license. I definitely agree that going on photo walks by foot makes you slow down and register smaller details and things that might take a second glance to notice than if you were driving through an area. I also really appreciate how photographing on foot makes me feel very present with my surroundings :) I've been enjoying following along other photographers' processes through videos like these - really like the calmness of the shot at 2:49!

Love your videos and images Willem. Photos from California and the surrounding area are always my fav, the light there always seems to be so golden. It blows my mind watching guys like you and Sam and listening how you talk about photography with such calmness and wisdom and I can sense how much its in your soul. It's refreshing and inspiring. It makes me want to live in California. People are just not like this where I live in the UK. People often either look at me like I'm crazy or want to mug me if they see me out with my camera.

The light in all of the western states, IMO, is great. I get back east and it so often seems flat. I've gotten some great shots back east, but it takes a bit more patience.

I can so much relate! I love walking around anyplace, expecially someplace a bit new to me, and just taking in everyting that I see. Maybe it's something about us growing up in the NJ/NY area, where everybody walks all the time? It was so different than most of California, but just like in this video, if I just open my eyes, there are cool places to walk nearly everyplace. Merry Christmas, Willem!

Wow Willem you are not just a great photographer but a great story teller. You've made this seemingly simple video of you walking around and then darkroom printing into a short film. Love all the details - the closeup shots, the sounds (the added sounds from the city while you walk around which seamlessly fade out when you show the photograph). Amazing overall production and again some really inspiring work from you!

LA County is 4,700 square miles. Of course it's not walkable, but the many neighborhoods are walkable. A lot are distinctly different and really close to each other. Silverlake and Redondo Beach are entirely different but very close. I've been to cities in the rest of the country which were not that interesting in the first place and the next nearest city is 50 miles away and it turns out to be exactly like the other one. I am not from LA so I'm not a homer but there are a lot of people who resent LA's influence and are politically motivated to hate it. The reality is it's a really unique, beautiful, sometimes ugly, but always fascinating place.
