An old guy who passed away some time ago said to me "Foresight is better than no sight". So it's EN 166. Spectacles can only reach category F, that is firing a 6mm steel ball weighing 0.86g travelling at maximum 45 m/s. Clay is the worse becasue everyone is looking up at the clay. The bits are normally falling at slow speed but spinning violently.

David thanks for a decent and informative video. You're 110%+ correct on the safety aspect for shooting glasses. I've been involved in several activities where good eye protection is warranted. Cycling, Skiing, Shooting both clay target as well as rifle and pistol on a hot range. I use RX glasses and have a fair amount of money tied up in the various glasses I use. I run a couple different Oakley and Smith Optics glasses on the rifle and pistol range when I'm instructing. I'll be wearing them for 8-10 hours a day in this arena and there are several things about the models I have that make for a less fatiguing yet very good protection. The pairs that I have are all very light with flexible frames and lenses that provide a good amount of coverage and wrap. I like other instructors have taken the occasional splash back of dirt, mud, or other foreign material during close range training. That's also why a cap along with eye and ear protection are required. I have seen a 40 caliber case get between a shooters skin and glasses in the past. Oakley and Smith Optics are known quality glasses that are available with rx lenses. They also although not cheap won't break the bank. I have used both Decot and Randolph Ranger glasses with RX lenses for 25+ years. Both companies build a quality product with the Randolph glasses being a bit better. The frames and lenses of the Randolph glasses are just a higher quality and I find the adjustable nose piece a very nice feature. I run the traditional Ranger frame which makes swapping lenses easy. I can run my Randolph lenses in the Decot frames as well due to the frame design. For color given where I live and shoot in Upstate NYS I tend to default to Purple with our orange targets. If the light is flat and poor I'll put in either a light Orange or light Yellow. Randolph has just come out with some new lenses that I hear give Pilla a strong challenge. I've tried some of the Pilla glasses and at least for me the tints didn't work as well as my Randolph or even Oakley glasses. That just comes down to how my eyes perceive color. You brought up another very good point about how high the glasses have to sit on the face so we're not looking into the frame or over the glasses while actually shooting. Part of the reason I and other shooters I know run traditional Decot or Ranger glasses is because of how high the glasses can be setup so we're looking through the lens. My Oakley glasses other than one pair with thick nose pieces all sit too low for the shotgun sports many times. The Smith Optics have an adjustable nose piece so that pair can also sit high enough for me. Other good quality brands that I've seen work on the clay ranges locally are Rudy Project, Tifosi, ESS, as well as several other lower priced safety glasses that are a shield style that sit high enough. The thing to be aware of with brands that don't have a strong tie to the shooting sports is that many of them won't have tints that are appropriate. Many sport and safety glasses will tend to be too dark or strong For people like me that need an RX be aware that several brands have an RX adapter which on first look seems like a good idea. The problem is that these adapters often have a smaller area where our vision is corrected. They also add additional surfaces for light to reflect off of as well as depending on how they fit in the frame they may be close enough to the face that the eye lashes come in contact with the RX insert. That's why I've gone with the RX brands I have.

Brought a set of castellani glasses on David’s recommendation and I can’t recommend them enough. Had a set of the evolution glasses to start and yes they are fantastic glasses for the money but the castellani are next level in terms of super clear, sharp lenses.

If you want prescription shooting glasses - the ZS Sport glasses from JHS are brilliant. Simon sorted out getting the thinner, flatter lenses in for my fairly strong prescription. I had the clear lenses to make sure I was happy with them, recently ordered some purple ones. Simon is great to deal with, and the glasses are top notch but not daft prices

Great video, always greatful to your Dad with hearing and eye safety, he was well ahead of a lot of shooting organisation. Buysecs direct Thatcham do proper shooting frames, adjustable at the bridge, made in Japan, with clear prescription lenses for £100 or any tint you like for £140.00. they also a range of pellet proof materials. All work is carried out in house, including eye test at Thatcham. So nice to have Frames that can click up and down at the bridge, with big shooting frames. They took about 3/4 days, to make and tint my shooting specs. Very professional.

Good vid, I went through several "el cheapo" shooting glasses before I settled on Evolutions. They were really good with a good selection of colours to choose from and they don't break the budget (you can get a set of four lenses and frames for about £50) and are I think the best choice for a beginner. But for all that Evos are good, if you are serious and have the cash Pilla's are much much better. I find that their colour boosting/negation and superb clarity make for a real advantage letting me acquire targets faster and making them stand out against a variety of backgrounds. The kicker with them is the cost £560 for three sents of lenses one set of frames and a box, so not ideal for a beginner and real thought and has to be put into your choice of lens colours.

Oakley Prizms are awesome. Their “golf” prism lenses are great. Same with their “field”. Not sure how much they are in the UK. In the US they go for about $120. I have the Radar EV. Great for IPSC handgun as well as Clays. Colours just pop. Great alternative to Pilla.

Hi David, what about those of us that are just starting out but wear prescription glasses? On my first lesson I was looking over the rim as you said, but also I have left eye dominance and my teacher put tape on my left lens to compensate. Would think I need a set of glasses that go over my prescription glasses with a permanent black dot to correct my left eye dominance. Any thoughts as to what's best?

Thanks! Great video! Do some glasses actually change the point of aim? I've noticed with any of my cheaper glasses that the target moves as I slide them on and off. Is that a cheap glasses thing? Is it just the top of the glasses where they are thinner that cause that unusual phenomenon? Thanks again!

Here in the UK I get my shooting tinted glasses from either All Eyes or JHS. Same German Frame (Menrad) used to be branded, Zeiss. Similar design to Davids RE frame. And no not several hundred pounds. As my prescription is of the order of +4.75 I get super thin to fit. Cost in the region of, £180.00. Pillar 5-7 hundred pounds & not suited to my prescription (unless inserts) is outrageous!

I've got a pair of Sordin Supreme Pro X ear defenders with the gel ear pieces. I'd like to understand what would be the best glasses to get which don't compromise the operation of the my ear defenders? I guess that means thin arms on the glasses so that they don't break the seal of the ear defender gel pads. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

It's madness when someone says a 400 pound pair of ballistic glasses are value for money, pilla with the zeis lenses are very clear- but lets get real here, once you get upto re ranger level its branding adding the price good luck picking clarity differences, wiley x, even beretta have some decent glasses for 50 pounds, 100 pounds upwards is wasted money on what are essentially all similar lense quality, same could be said about castellani vests- branding at its best

The frame David shows is the Sporter by Randolph Engineering (RE) It’s available in two sizes, 57mm and 62mm and comes with a range of clip on colours for over the top of prescription lenses. You can also have fully tinted prescription lenses made for it. They also make the Edge, XLW, Classic and Falcon designs (plus a couple of less popular styles) Happy to advise further if needed. Hope that helps! Ed
