Aperture Priority has been my main mode from the beginning. Manual mode definitely has its time and place to be used, but I personally don’t think Manual needs to be used 100% of the time. I use whichever mode is appropriate for the situation, and topics like these are actually one of the things that makes me love photography. There’s many ways to shoot, and there’s no true “right way” to do it. There’s possibilities true are endless. 📸

Well said! I’ve even found myself using Shutter Priority lately as well. I even filmed this video in Aperture Priority on my FX3 as an experiment haha.

i use manual because in aperture priority sometimes the camera makes my shutter speed too slow and i dont notice, in shutter priority same thing with aperture i want sharp photos aperture 3.5 and above, iso i never have automatic i like to know at any time what exactly my setting are

Being old enough that some (film) cameras I’ve owned gave me no other option but to shoot manually, and with a separate light meter in hand, I think the biggest benefit of manual is that you learn how exposure in photography actually works! These days when every photo from your iPhone comes out flat and with no dynamic range, regardless of how the subject was lit, at least you’ll know why (and maybe shoot in RAW). Once you understand what you’re doing, setting the camera’s auto boundaries - min/max shutter speed, min/max ISO - appropriately for what you’re about to shoot, then using an auto mode where you can manually override the camera’s starting point is the only way to go.

I so empathize with looking for places to shoot. I spend a LOT of time in Google maps sniffing around. Plus asking google "events near ___" over and over, trying to find something fun. Got a zombie walk today that way. ;)

I've been enjoying using aperture priority with a fast way to change min shutter speed (I have it mapped to C1). That takes care of potential motion blur issues.

I have an A7C + Voigtlander 40mm 1.2, so manual is my only (self imposed) option. Worth it for the quality trade off and for my particular style of photography where I zone focus and don't really care if the subject is 100% in focus. The overall feel, weight, balance etc of the shot is more important than focus being bang on imo.

I used to shoot Aperture priority when shooting motorsports but since I’ve been doing more landscape and urban such as yourself I love shooting manual….i love using the dials,manipulating the image,slowing down and basically relaxing….otherwise stick it in full auto…

I use my Leicas and Hasselblad digital cameras on Av probably 80% of the time if I’m just out taking photos for fun. Sure, I know how to use manual, but sometimes it just frees up extra brain power to pay attention to my surroundings and less about the camera itself.
@DylanBlackburn2 ай бұрын
Agreed completely. Once you realize that Av consistently exposes exactly how you would manually anyways it just makes sense.

100% manual since 7 years, don't trust the camera to know what I see, since I can go from portrait to skateboarding action to close up bokeh against the sun.

I shoot 90% in Ap, 5% in Auto, 5% in Manual. Why overthink it with these new gen cameras? I find myself worrying about the ISO being too high, but in reality the photos come out great! Fun Fact: a great picture is great, regardless of how it was captured. An iPhone photo vs Manual FF photo, no (non-photography nerd) one cares, nor will ask about the settings…
@DylanBlackburn2 ай бұрын
I agree! Especially when shooting in Aperture Priority I don’t care what the settings are because I know the photo looks great. Especially when editing I don’t even pay attention to what the ISO was of the photo. Many people ask me to include the settings for each photo I take… I do occasionally but most of the time I find it rather pointless.
