Shooting Large Format X-Ray Film |The First Time |

I stumbled over shooting Large Format X-Ray film by coincidence, but i was emediatly totaly torn into the topic. So i ordered some film online and made my first tests of Shooting X-Ray Film in a large format camera.
One of the Pictures turned out OK while the other one was a fail. In general i can say so far, that i like the details that the film can hold and it´s sharpness and overall strong contrasts. But i have to do further experimentation!

Shot Mammo film many years ago (at least 15 years) this one was double coated though & rather slow and contrasty. I never had a problem cutting or any fogging with it. I'm surprised you can still get the film as when I retired from X - Ray sales in 2013 most hospitals were going digital.

Yeah so I just got some Fuji super RX-N and HR-U. I cut some 8x10 down to 4x5 in my darkroom last night. Turns out my safe light is not very safe for the RX-N a blue light sensitive film. Had to cover the light with a rag to lower the amount of red light. I completely fogged two sheets trying to figure out what I was doing. After taking a piece of film from the middle of the stack I found that it had a 1/4 inch fogged line on all the sheets now. Sucks but at least it wasn’t some Ilford or Kodak. Now I know what not to do with it. I’ll cut it down to 3x4 sheets and that line will be gone. Can’t wait to try some out in my 8x10. Waiting on film holder lol.

yah i had the same problem with my first tries. turns out that you need actual red safelight. not that orangy stuff they sell nowerdays. and also it should not be too intensive. I have Aa 660nm light perfect for all my normal papers and so on but too strong for that film. Tested my orange light …. nope bad idea. solution. i took the orange light, doubled up a res lee filter foil ( i do not remember the number but it has to be the correct one) put it on the light and it worked. also make sure the light is atleast one meter away from your film (better 2). To cut the film in nearly total darknes i marked two different positions of my cutter with scotch, so i can feel them in the dark and know how to position the sheets. Also, be very very careful some X-ray films are coted on both sides and they do not forgive anything! They scratch super easily and the emulsion also can come of easily. Good luck! If everything works out, this is a super cheap way to shoot and also the results can be super nice.
