I’ve been in Japan the last few weeks as well looking to buy a film camera. The three I was looking at were the Contax G1, Fuji GA645 and the Mamiya 7ii. I told my girlfriend “this guy made a whole channel just to help me make a decision!” And then you go and talk about them so beautifully that not only do I tear up a bit during your GA645 video but now it’s made it harder to choose since your way of speaking about each of them shows an equal love for all. I wish I knew you, almost every place you were in, I was in. I might’ve passed you! Your channel is awesome, the way you talk about photography is awesome. Thank you for making these videos, they only strengthened my love of making photos even more. I’d love to keep up with your work if you share it anywhere online or otherwise.

I studied photojournalism in the early 90s and somewhere in my notes I glued a picture of the Mamiya 7 and wrote “it will be mine”. Nothing came of it as it was too expensive, until I manage to buy a 7 II in 2013, still affordable at the time. Now I find that I don’t love it as much as I thought. The images feel too clinical, too focused. Yet it’s such a portable and light camera! I’m learning to love it again but unlike you I try to keep the aperture as wide as possible to get a bit more soul. Great video by the way, even the music is good, which is an aspect of KZbin videos I often find very annoying. Thanks for sharing 😊

@Juno_Doran2 ай бұрын
@ I hope my comment didn’t come across as a criticism when I wrote about wanting the photos to have more soul, now I see it can be interpreted that way, sorry about that. We’re all different and sometimes I prefer areas with less focus. I’m still using film with the Mamiya 7 II after taking a long time off to use exclusively a Fujifilm GFX 50R.

Some advice for you: whenever you use the advancing lever of your camera, don't let it return by itself, "accompany" it with your finger in a way that it returns slowly. Apparently the advancing mechanism in these cameras is somewhat fragile and some technicians recommend that to keep them running as long as possible. Leaving that aside, this hypes me quite a bit! I want to visit Japan next year and I'm taking a 7 with me too.

I really appreciate that! Your channel has provided great comfort over here.👊
I watched the Contax G1 video first and loved it. My first thought: this guy is involved in some kind of media communication professionally, so no surprise when I saw that you are an art director. I have since then watched each of your videos, and I'm already just a little sad that the next is the last :-D - but I have of course subscribed, and look forward to anything you might share on your adventures. Watching your use of Portra in those night scenes, I wondered if you have tried any colour temperature adjustment filters? I'm guessing not. I haven't yet used them in my own journey with film yet, but having used some Silbersalz (Kodak Vision) "T" and "D" films, I became more aware of film's response to different sources of light. So I am thinking of experimenting with colour correction filters a bit in 2025 to see the results. (Maybe that's a bad rabbit hole?). At least with a rangefinder you don't see the correction in the viewfinder. Anyway, I've loved watching the journey you are sharing here - thank you!

Did you buy & develop the film in Japan? If not, curious what your process/experience was transporting it through airport security?
@popularbehaviourАй бұрын
Bought and developed the film here in Vancouver. I always ask for a hand scan of my film and most airports are fine with this. The security lineup in Oahu' airport has a vintage sign stating that films below 800 ISO are safe to pass through x-ray machines. Have no idea if this is true so I always opt for the hand scan option.

No one has ever explained why the exposure 'triangle' is called a 'triangle' - there does not seem to be a particular geometric or mechanical interpretation of finding the right exposure value that in any way maps to a triangle. I don't see the pedagical value in trying to force these three peramaters into a triangle, infact I think it just adds to the confusion. You don't go and ask for a 'triangle' of beers for you and your two friends.
@popularbehaviour8 күн бұрын
@@edmoore it can be confusing for sure but the triangle metaphor is used simply to denote there are 3 variables (aperture, iso and shutter speed) involved in making an exposure. Tri comes from Tres which is Latin for 3. It’s a photographic convention that’s been used since the beginning of photography. Just think 3!
@edmoore8 күн бұрын
That’s precisely my point - it is ‘merely’ three variables and they are not linked in the way a triangle implies. It is pedagogically damaging that we confuse new photographers in this way. Just say the exposure trio! There is no geometric interpretation here. This is not at you at all, we all had to sit through the fault triangle metaphor.
@popularbehaviour8 күн бұрын
@ the thing is each side of the ‘triangle’ is linked to the others. You change one and the others are affected. Each side is a value scale that impacts the other’s values. Think Triangle applies!🔺
@edmoore8 күн бұрын
@@popularbehaviour That isn't true, thoguh. What does 'affected' mean - the other two sides are the same length unless you decide to change them. Where is the mechanical or geometric analogy here? Are you trying to keep constant area of the triangle for the triangle, where area representents exposure value?
