This was the first time I ever shot Super 8 and while I might not have gotten everything in focus, I had so much fun exploring NYC with my brother, David (the newest member of Wild We Roam!). We filmed this in early February and that’s why there’s still tons of people out and about NYC.
Lou and I used to shoot a lot of analog film when we were living in Berlin a few years ago, but over time we had kind of lost our love for photography, however getting to pick up our shoot film hobby in the form of video was exactly what we'd been craving! This Canon AutoZoom quickly stole our heart and we're really excited to make more little films using this beautiful old camera.
We have two more videos on Super 8 coming for you in the next few weeks and I can't wait to hear what you think of our new toy! ALSO - this is the first video that David not only filmed, but also edited from start to finish :) We're so proud of him and excited to see his editing style grow. If you're reading this make sure to leave a comment of encouragement for him!
Big hugs,
Dana
ps. Things I'm going to try to work on next time - getting proper exposure and keeping things in focus.

Hi and hope you enjoy our first Super 8 video! I just wanted to clarify that we filmed this in early February before the pandemic and any social distancing rules hit NYC. Looking back it was such a fun day of exploring and I really appreciate the chance to rewatch it and feel like we’re back in the city we love so much. Hope you’re all safe and healthy. Sending all our love, Dana

@@Cheryl1965 Hey Cheryl, I'm surprised this has upset you so much. I would argue that it is extremely clear from the offset of this video that this was filmed BEFORE social distancing measures were put in place because there are people everywhere. They also stated this in their description (as well as this pinned comment). Dana & Lou put so much love & effort into each of the their films and it is disheartening to see that this is the only comment you have to say about their film 😔Sending you love and wishing you health Cheryl x

Welcome to the newest member of "wild we roam "! Great video, David! Looking forward to more. And job well done to you too, Dana! It was so nice to see N.Y. I was just there last October. Went with a good old friend of mine to the Metropolitan. Thinking and praying for the people there as well 💕

@@JitsIntoTheSunset I find it very hard to understand your response. It's a scary time with so many deaths and so many to come. And yet there are are people out there walking around in denial, still, acting as if nothing is wrong. This channel, today, posts a video that is in the epicenter of this pandemic, in the US. Just casually walking around NYC. My suggestion to them, to add something to the title so that people know immediately that this was pre pandemic in NYC, is to help them spread a healthy and clear message. Period.

It's amazing how awesome the quality of Super 8 personal cams from the 60s was better than most consumer grade video cams from the 80s until just recently.

This was great. Thanks for sharing your journey. The Super8 look is very beautiful and nostalgic. You are very fortunate to have the 814. Great camera. I shot my first major film job on the 1014 back in 1982. It was a promo for a cable television talk show. Unfortunatly, I no longer have the camera.

Such a nice video! Love how much fun you had! Can you make more like new york related videos? Maybe a guide of your favourite places or about the feeling you have about new york or it’s vibe, it‘s history, it‘s soul - anything like that! I feel such a deep love and connection for that city and can‘t visit it so often as I live in europe. When I see you and your vibe running around there, my heart gets warm 🥰

Its fun to see some one film, really film, super 8 these days. my Dad did quite a bit in the 70-80's and a little in the sixties. It wasn't really as interesting from back then because, I think, it cost a lot then for such a short time run that it was impossible to get enough practice. Now everyone can video and photograph to there hearts content and get really good, if they want. So modern video looks like real life and film looks kind of like the special treat it used to be, until camcorders. thanks, I wish it was real affordable now but maybe that would devalue the effort.

Excellent job! It's great to see that instead of faking the look of Super-8, people are actually going out and using the real thing! It's way easier, gives better looking results, and shooting film can teach you all kinds of good habits you can take back with you to use with your camcorder/iPhone/what-have-you.

One thing that helps me focus is to zoom in on you subject and focus, then back off the zoom to where you want frame your shot, without touching the focus again. Also as the viewfinder is dim, focus on a nearby object that is brighter. I have the same camera and it helps me. If all that fails you, just estimate your distance to your subject and preset the focus with the numbers on the lens. Great film by the way, the aesthetic from super 8 is so pleasing!

You can look at the films (made for theaters) and do what they do ! For example, you are moving your camera to fast. I did not know there is still labs for the 8mm film, I do 35mm color slides but I thought 8 films processing were over.

I enjoyed your footage and enthusiasm. I started filming in super 8 in 1973 and once in a while, I will still shoot a roll. Part of the fun of shooting in super 8 is not having the instant feedback as to what the shot looked like. Sometimes the ‘gritty’ look is more effective than the ‘clean’ look of video. The one downside is the cost, so when you go out shooting, it’s best to figure out what you want to shoot before starting to film. Good luck in the future. BTW, the Canon 814 you are using is an excellent camera.

Every Super 8 camera had a focussing device that was visible in the viewfinder, split image, microprism were a couple. With Plenty of light you could leave it at 15ft distance, and most times focus would be good.

Nice work. I have the same camera. A little tip, each scene should be about 5 to 7 seconds long, less important scenes about 3 seconds and a more important scene 10 seconds or more. That seems to be the best flow to keep the film interesting and moving along. Also, the best way to focus is to zoom right in and set the focus there, then everything should be in focus whatever the shot. (except for macro closeups). Cheers!

I think the best Super 8 film is Ektachrome 100D which is a reversal film. Once processed you can watch it on a movie projector. That's still the best and most organic way to see your movies. Digital transfers look good but will never outshine the original copy projected on a screen. After all that's the point of shooting film in my opinion.
