Whoa Pardner, You stated that the 44-40 is a pistol cartridge and you are mistaken, the 44-40 was introduced along with the Winchester Model 1873 in 1873. Colt did not begin cambering this cartridge in pistols until a much later date. The 44-40 Cartridge is a Rifle Cartridge that was later adapted to pistols!

The 1873 was not only designed to shoot out to 300 meters but according to the 1875 Winchester catalog it was designed to shoot to 600 yards. Quote " The theory with which the Winchester Repeating Rifle has been constructed is, to produce an arm effective and accurate at all practicable ranges, up to 500 to 600 yards,". The Uberti lever rifles(Henry, 1866, 1873) are wonderful rifles to shoot. Very accurate in .44-40 Black or Smokeless. I use .429 wheel weight hardness with smokeless. The slightly necked brass case fits so well in the chamber that there is never any blowback of residue on the case neck. I believe the .44-40 is more accurate than .45 Long Colt. The case hardened steel frame is beautiful. I have only fired mine at a maximum distance of 200 meters. You did great at 300 ! ! !

Incorrect. The 44-40 was in fact designed to be a rifle cartridge, not a pistol cartridge. It was the round designed and engineered for the Winchester 1873.
@bwhog3 жыл бұрын
Correct... the cartridge is actually named "44 WCF" (Winchester Center Fire). Winchester was a rifle company. They didn't make handguns. "44-40" was Colt's re-designation so that they wouldn't have to print "44 WCF" on their handguns.

During the era of the US Coal Miner strikes and violence in the 1910-1923 period, Winchesters were primary rifle of the miners, 73's, 92's, 94's and a few 95's. The majority of the Winchesters were older used '73's as these were the cheaper Winchesters in this era, the miners owning primarily used guns, these people were endemically broke so even moderately prices weapons were unavailable. 10.4 Swiss and Italian Vetterli's were also, used, being very inexpensive on the surplus market and being decent "bear guns" in W. Virginia and other places. Springfield 1873's got into the mix also, but the Vetterlis appear to have been more available from Sears and Bannermans, definitely poor man's rifles, but the 73 Winchester was the primary weapon which means the miners were severely under gunned and much of the fighting was sniping in a mountainous forested terrain. This video shows how difficult it would have been for the miners to compete with military style weaponry and more powerful commercial weapons provided by the weathly companies. In comparison brand new Winchester 94 carbines especially in .30-30 (the famous "Carabina Trienta Trienta") were being sold covertly in large quantity in the 1910-1916 era down in Mexico to the revolutionaries and therefore the Revolutionaries were not so outgunned by the government troops as were the miners by company "detectives", local law enforcement (owned by the companies), and national guard troops. The sole difference was money, the miners had little to no backing while the Mexican Revolution generated a lot of cash due to ambitious men wanting to control the government.

300m = 328 yards. Your rifle sights were calibrated for elevation in yards. I suspect that if you bring your target back to 274m, you will have an easier time zeroing it.
@bwhog3 жыл бұрын
I'd never consider this rifle and cartridge beyond 125 yards but I appreciate this sort of go-for-broke test. I remember one day seeing how my .22 would do at 200 yards and the shots were all over the place but it DID hit the target! I have one of these Uberti rifles with the traditional semi-buckhorn sights. I had to raise it to max elevation to sight out to 100 yards and still ended up about ten inches low. However, I was astounded to find that I had nine shots in about a a 3 1/2 inch group plus one flier (there's always a flier...) with seven of those holes in a two inch group! (I was shooting Winchester SuperX 200gr SP)

Great video, and it explains why there was so much gunfire in those Western Movie gun battles (lack of accuracy, meaning you better fire often and hope for the best : ) And speaking of movies, has anyone else noticed that guys got plucked off their horses in spite of the fact that during a frontal attack the horse's head covers practically the entire body of the rider, while practically no horses ever get hit? Now that is some fancy shooting.

Responding to your first observation, in real life, in "olden days", firing of blackpowder, whether in revolvers or long guns, emitted so much smoke that it was a challenge for the shooter to line up her/his sites for follow-up rounds. AND it obscured the shooter's image for the opponent(s) to get off clear, return-fire. A BIG GRIEVANCE: Most of today's and recent-years' westerns don't use blackpowder blanks, but smokeless powder (or 1/4-load black powder blanks) and then the post production department cranks up the sound volume of the studio's library sound effect of a gun shot. Ridiculous. When one looks at an ancient Hopalong Cassidy, Tom Mix, William S. Hart or other 1930s-produced western ALL the gunplay is with black powder blanks. Full loads. And the effect FILLS the screen magnificently, so effectively. I truly, truly like 2017's theatrical western, "Hostiles!" -- so much that I paid to see it five (5 !) times over three weeks at various theaters / cinemas. "BluRay and DVD be damned" I thought. I wanted the theatrical experience, over and over, with this outstanding film, this beautiful western with a compelling story supported by a brilliant cast. BUT, "it killed me" to see the majority of the gun shots in these incredibly orchestrated action scenes delivered with those "pip-squeak"-type, smokeless powder blanks. The authentic, realistic sound effects were not enough. Before I get too-off the subject I will close. "Happy shooting, all !"

@scvandy31296 жыл бұрын
The Century Limited is so beautiful IMO. Congratulations on your ownership of one; you are so lucky. I have the .357 Magnum, the Cowboy model, which looks similar, but isn't nearly as "fancy" in both metal and wood. It does shoot "fine". I also own a 1990s-manufactured Marlin 1894 carbine in .44-40, which was produced concurrently with the same model in the predominant caliber, .44 Magnum, but to a significantly slower total amount. Years ago "someone at the range" told me mine was part of a limited run of 1894s in .44-40 -- commissioned by WalMart. That explains its features: very basic. Nothing fancy about the wood or metal. Still, it's a .44-40! With JM stamped on the barrel. If I can find a Century Limited for less than $1,000 I'd surely "jump at the chance". But, the most recent price on GunBroker was over $1200. I usually rationalize how much ammunition one could buy with the extra $200 !

When I bought my vintage Winchester 1873 rifle I was told I should NOT shoot the commercial load offered by Winchester, the 180 grain, jacket soft point bullet; that I should only shoot the lower velocity, Cowboy Action Shooting lead cartridges. Another "expert" told me "b.s. -- the jacketed bullets and the smokeless powder charge 'pushing them' do NOT harm the (old) barrel. I went so far as to read up and do further research on the subject. Since I enjoy our shared hobby it was fun, informative reading, NEVER boring. I still didn't feel like the experts could totally agree or disagree whether or not the standard Winchester .38-40 jacketed soft point bullet was okay in a 130-year old rifle. I have nothing against Cowboy Action Shooting ammunition, but I would like to feel confident that I can shoot a standard, mass-produced factory load of .38-40 without harming my relic. Of course, it's well over 100 years old, but I'd like to thing firing the gun at the range three or four times will be okay. BTW, I did buy the Uberti version of the 1873 SRC in .38-40. It is definitely "prettier" than the original, antique Winchester. Now, if we could only get Winchester to "fire up" their manufacture of standard .38-40 ammo, which, "urban legend" tells us is supposed to happen about every five (5 !) years. Most of the non-CAS stuff "out there" is vintage = costly.

I'm hoping that I can get decent accuracy on target at 200 yards. And I plan on hunting with it inside of 100. I feel like if I can get on target accuracy at 200 my 100 yard accuracy will be excellent. Have you ever tried a full Max 40 grains black powder? What bullet/mold are you using for your 44-40's? 70 shots without even wiping the barrel is impressive! I can't seem to find a mold with grease grooves deep enough to take enough lube. The barrel on my 1866 gets completely fouled up after 5-10 shots using standard Lee molds.

Your video on the 44 40 at 300 meters has given me an entirely new direction to pursue in my chosen shooting sport: Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette. I was taught, either swab the bore or at least blow tube between every shot. I was also taught at an early age to question everything and keep an open mind. Your accuracy at 300 meters with your 44-40 with neither has me wondering about the wisdom of what I think I know. What, pray tell, is your bullet lube??? I would really like the luxury of load and shoot instead of the delay, on the shooting clock, of 10 or 15 seconds patching or tubing between each shot. I will soon be experimenting with load and shoot for accuracy without patch or blow tube in my 38-55 Remington Hepburn. Best Regards DRF Bethany Oklahoma USA

don faulkenberry Don, there is nothing special invented here. I use the same lube I use for my Minié balls in muzzleloading target shooting. Mix 8 parts of tallow wth 2 parts of beeswax and add a little 0W40 engine oil. Be careful with the wngine oil. You need a soft lube, but not a liquid.

Thanks for the great video. I've never knew that 44-40 round can hit the target from 300m! But is it strong enough to hunt animals at 300m? I mean thing like wild boars or something.
@wildrangeringreen3 жыл бұрын
Not at 300, especially not with BP (smokeless loads aren't much faster, due to pressure limits). Rifles in .44WCF, .45 colt, .357Magnum, and .44 Mag are 125m and closer type guns for common deer (fallow, white tail, Mule, ect) and boar/feral hog. Winchester did sell these rifles with tangent sights as an option, but I feel that was for more of a martial application, where you don't really need to kill the target to get the job done. 44WCF can still cause a pretty serious wound at 300, but can't be trusted for hunting (where the goal is to kill the animal as quick as possible).

Hi Cap and Ball! Is it the "high" "medium" or "low" frontsight? Regards from your Neighbour from Vienna! ;)
