I had one for Basic Training at Ft. Benning GA. the Home of the Infantry back in the late Summer of 1986. Had it until when the Army started issuing the M16A2 to the Regular Army in 1988. They were also in combat as late as the Panama Invasion when the 5th ID used them. I saw M16A1s with National Guard units till the early 1990s till about 1993. I love them for their simplicity in zeroing with just battle sights.

Personally, when I got out of the Army I hoped I'd never see another one of those things again as long as I lived. Over the years I've collected US military firearms including M1's and M14's but never an M16, I just had my fill of them dragging one around everywhere I went.

The one issued to me in basic training in Oct of 1983 was marked XM16E1 and had a six digit serial number. And that puppy could still hunt, it shot a perfect 40 out of 40 on the qualification course for me. And every single M16 accepted and issued by the US Army all had the forward assist, even the earliest one's that didn't have chrome lined chambers and bores, the Army insisted on the forward assist before they'd adopt the rifle, it was the earliest Air Force accepted M16's that didn't have it, but with the exception of course of tool room and pre acceptance M16's that were given to early Army Special Force's in Vietnam all Army issued M16's had the forward assist, you will never see a picture of a US Army soldier in Vietnam without one.

that rifle sent me into another place and time more than 50 years ago.had trained and qualified with the M 14 at Parris Island ,assigned to WESPAC, went through Okinawa (jungle uniform, jungle boots and several shots) flew into Danang spent the night in a bunker, helicoptered out to my unit (Alpha 1/1) got issued my M16 with a 3 pronged flash surpreser (became a super wire breaker to break open C ration cases) we walked through a small village to a large series of bomb craters.we took our newly issued rifles with a box of 20 rounds.i remember thinking how tiny they looked compared to the giant M-14 cartridge.we were shown how to zero in small outlines of upper body paintings on 50 gallon drums. I loved my rifle, I kept it clean and always near me. I never used a "real" sling for it...used para cord ,tied one end on the front sight and the other at the bottom of the stock. was issued 5 magazines at our "base"...an old French .fort up at the top of a small hill. you had a great panoramic view from there. at night ,you could see cannon flashes out in the distance. halfway down the hill was an ARVEN 105 howitzer unit assigned to fire out support when units in the field called for it. when our unit got the word to stand down I had accumulated 25 20 round magazines(I never saw any 30 rounders. my rifle(that helped keep me alive ) had lost one of it's 3 prongs, was scratched up, had gone thru several para chord slings and had never let me down .thank you COLT

I used one for the first time in '84 as a Combat Engineer trainee and beyond at Ft. Leonard Wood , Missouri. Ours were from the war in Vietnam and were reconditioned. Nice weapon, but the 5.56 is wimpy and the 20 inch barrel was a bit long. The first day on the firing range one blew up. Fortunately, the soldier escaped with minor scratches.

Good thing to get out to the people, but the price will keep it from ever getting it to the younger ones that really want one of these nice rifles. More than 2500 is a little bit too much for the common man raising a family and trying to secure their property and home also. Great 4th of July to you all and enjoy your day today and God bless everyone. Shame that it cost you a arm and a leg.

Bought one and sold it. Not a real Colt just a Colt roll mark which was sloppy. This is a 100% completely outsourced rifle and doesn’t have any barrel markings which for 2500 was a joke. If they mark the barrel and drop the price to 1400 then I’d consider it again. But a Colt it is not. Just get a SP1.

One other option never mentioned, you can purchase a ***Registered / transferable drop in Auto Sear*** which is by itself ***a machine gun*** and it can be used in any firearm without problems as long as you retain the paperwork. You can carry a photocopy of your BATFE paperwork. Con: You will pay $ 30,000 for one device that cost much less than $100 to make. Pro: You can use it in any gun made after the 1996 virtual ban on newly manufactured full auto firearms.

The Colt price point of $2,500 is too expensive; a more viable option is the PTR H&R series of Retro AR15A1 rifles at a price approx $1,000.00! Also, the 1 in 12 twist while accuracy optimized for 55 grain bullets, it is a poor choice for heavier weight bullets, giving a MOA of 6" or more with some 62 grain bullets, so go with the 1` in 7 inch twist for for versatile shooting purposes.

@dukecraig2402
@dukecraig2402 Жыл бұрын
@@warrenharrison9490 They didn't cheapen anything out in the rifles, there were those in the Army that said from day one it should have had a chrome lined chamber and barrel since the M14 had already had that because testing showed that jams happened less often with chrome lining, but they were overridden by people who theorized that since Eugene Stoner didn't originally specify that in his original design it was unnecessary. There was 3 problems, the wrong powder used in the cartridges that was never tested with the rifles, that I'll bet wouldn't have hung up in the chambers if they'd actually have had chrome lined chambers. No cleaning kits issued with them, which also might have negated the dirty ammo problem. And lack of training, which is kind of irrelevant since they weren't issued with cleaning kit's anyways. The center of all the problems was the much dirtier burning ball powder instead of ammo that had stick powder that was the type they were tested with. But they didn't cheapen up the design, Eugene Stoners last design as of it being taken out of his hands and Colt taking over from buying the patent from Armalite didn't have a chrome lined chamber and bore, that was never part of his original design.
@warrenharrison9490
@warrenharrison9490 Жыл бұрын
@@dukecraig2402 Colt did cheapen out, they didn't give the steel the treatment as designed by Stoner. He explains this in his interview videos. Colt didn't want to pay for the more expensive process of what today is considered nitriding, it was an extra step with a specialized treatment, chrome lining does the same effect at a less expensive cost and more available process that did solve the problem. Unfortunately at the cost of lives, those responsible for these bad decisions that collectively lead to deaths should have been held liable.
@dukecraig2402
@dukecraig2402 Жыл бұрын
@@warrenharrison9490 Stoner made a lot of claims down the road in interviews that aren't supported by anything except him saying it, as someone once pointed out there's not a single blueprint from when he was involved in it's development that shows any of the parts requiring any kind of nitrate coating or chroming, there's just him in interviews claiming it, another thing he claims that I'm very suspicious of is the one about the tests in Alaska supposedly being sabotaged, there's never been a single person ever that's come forward and verified that, sooner or later everyone gets out of the military but not a single person who was involved in those tests has ever come forward and verified his accusations that they were intentionally sabotaged, nobody that wasn't a career soldier and was just some private up there that got out a few years later and wouldn't have anything to lose telling the truth, most likely the story about the nail that was in place of a receiver pin or wherever was most likely just something that fell out and was replaced with whatever they had laying around, I mean that's just a ridiculous accusation if you stop and think about it, the people running those test were all highly experienced with weapons and if you're going to intentionally sabotage something there's far more subtle ways of doing it than taking a pin out and replacing it with a nail. There's been more lies and BS thrown around about both the M16 and the M14 when it comes to that whole controversy, I have no problem with the M16 and I can assure you that after it was properly developed it turned into a first class weapon, every single one they put in my hands including the one I had in basic training that was stamped XM16E1 with a six digit serial number worked perfectly fine including that one shooting a perfect 40 out of 40 for me on the qualification range, and by the same token from owning several M14's since I've been out of the service I can assure you that most of the nonsense thrown around about them including what was said in the 1968 Congressional inquiry about them is total nonsense, it's exaggerations and lies that all stem from people, particularly Robert McNamara, covering their asses for pushing an underdeveloped M16 on the troops and getting a bunch of them killed, one of the things they had to do to justify pushing an underdeveloped M16 on troops that hadn't gone through the proper development processes was to demonize the M14 to make it look as though it had so many issues it needed an immediate replacement, both the testimony of the men who used it in Vietnam right here in the comments section of KZbin videos on the M14 and actual government records from tests show that it was hardly the problem child claimed by the people responsible for taking a proven and trusted weapon off the the men using it and forcing something on them that at that point was an underdeveloped failure that got a bunch of them killed, anyone smart enough to look at Robert McNamara and understand that JFK made him the Secretary of Defense because he was known for streamlining Ford and that same thing was his mission as Secretary of Defense can figure out that he ordered the M14 to be replaced by the M16 simply because it was so much cheaper to purchase, the only real flaw of the M14 was it's expense to manufacture with all it's forged and heat treated parts, then when the whole thing blew up in MacNamara's face it was ass covering time so his high ranking cronies in the military and in Congress got busy with all the lies and the smoke and mirrors of deception. Aside from Stoner making claims in interviews there's never been a single shred of evidence that Colt didn't start out making them where he left off, no blueprints to back his claims, no one from Colt has ever come forward and said anything about them cheapening them up, and on top of that it makes absolutely no sense that they would, at that point not only did Colt have a long and reliable reputation with the military they'd also made so many weapons for them why in the world would they do something that stupid? They'd made revolvers all the way back to the Civil War, Gatling Guns, Thompson Machine guns, BAR's, M1911's, even 20mm cannons for jets like the A8 Crusader and too many others to list, they had an impeccable record with the military and well understood their demands for standards and quality, why in the world would they do something like that? Nothing about it makes sense. If Stoner would have specified things like that they'd have done it, they'd have had to because it'd have been part of the design, that's how those contracts work, history is full of arms manufacturers that had their arms rejected by the military for not making them as specified, North American Arms and their rejected M1911A1's during WW2 are proof of that, no one can take it upon themselves to change the specifications laid down by the designer of a weapon being made for the US military.

The Marine Corps and the Army never purchased any without forward assists, it's a myth that they did and something he's wrong about in this video, the Army demanded from day one that a forward assist be put on them before they'd accept the rifle for service, with the exception of early pre production and tool room samples given to Army Special Force's early in Vietnam you will never see a picture of a US soldier or Marine in Vietnam with an M16 that doesn't have a forward assist, once again it was something they demanded be incorporated into the rifles design before they'd accept it for service, the movie We Were Soldiers starring Mad Max himself Mel Gibson portraying the 1st Calvary Division's battle in November of 1965 in the IA Drang Valley was well researched and shows the Army soldiers with the correct "XM16E1" early first batch M16's with forward assist's and three prong flash suppressor's (my issue weapon in basic training in Oct of 1983 was marked XM16E1 and had a six digit serial number). Only the Air Force purchased M16's that didn't have forward assist's on them, after a certain point, and I'm not sure exactly when that was, all military M16's were standardized to the type with forward assist's, I'm not sure if it was because the Defense Department told the Air Force they had to standardize with everyone else or if Colt didn't want to run a separate production line that included separate forgings that lacked the boss where the forward assist goes just for the Air Force anymore and told the Air Force they'd no longer make a different one for them, could be either one. There's a lot of debate in the M16 community about whether or not the forward assist is even necessary, my view is it's better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it, aside from it's intended use to force a round into the chamber I've never been a commando but I sure do like the idea of a feature that allows me to slowly move the bolt forward and then finish locking it up with the forward assist for the sake of having to chamber a round quietly because an enemy soldier is feet away from me.

@Echosdad2 There's also the XM16E1 which has the forward assist but doesn't have most other upgrades that the M16A1 had. The Airforce mostly used the AR-15(which was basically just the pre-M16 one) and M16 iirc though.
