Great video and amazing deal on the telescope! I bought the same model many years ago for well over $1000 new. Mine had some extra coating that added a hundred dollars or so. It’s been sitting in the box, unused for years but you inspired me to get it out and start using it with my A7Rv. Thanks!

It's the round knob, tiny, about the width of a pinky nail, at the back of the scope, any etx, right-hand side, on mine. You twirl it to focus. Not parallel to the tube, but at the back of the scope. 😷🌈

I have the same setup, but used to use a heavier camera (5D Mk III) and the motor struggled while tilting the telescope downwards. So, it helps to use manual adjusting. Since then, I've used Canon M2 or the Sony A7 III, both much lighter than the Canon. It's a good telescope for what it is and at $100, you got a great deal!

These Sony cameras all use one of 2 "universal" IR remotes you can get for $10-20 if you want to shoot without the timer. Most work with "RMT-DSLR1" but some of the newer cameras only work with "RMT-DSLR2".

I have one, it's amazing optics. It has about 1cm resolution at 2km distance. I paid little over 200$ for it new because it was an ending model I think. Current version is like 600$. Mine isn't motorized, you got a borderline criminally good deal at 100$. I think I paid that much for the camera adapters. I thought it was too much tele to fit the entire moon in frame though. If you use it with stacking software it can take wild pictures.

Good day. I have just bought the Celestron SLT 120 and I have a Sony A7 II mounted directly to the telescope through the t-ring. I know that the telescope has and f stop of F/12, focal length of 1500 mm, I pointed it to Jupiter but wasn't able to achieve focus at all. I tried with Steadyshot off and on, the maximum manual setting for the lens (correction) is 1,000 mm. What part am I doing wrong? Thank you.
@carltanner9065
@carltanner9065 4 жыл бұрын
The telescope isn't made for photography, only visual observing. That's because the point of focus lies further away from the secondary mirror than it needs to be for photography. In other words, the back focus of your telescope is too long for your camera. You have two choices here...you can either move the main mirror of your scope up the tube until you shorten the back focus enough to bring your images into focus for your camera. Or, you can replace the focuser on your scope with a shorter one, which does much the same job as moving the mirror. Once you've done that, you'll be able to get the camera to work correctly with your scope.

It looks like the Neximage has female c-mount threads. That means you'll need a male C-mount threaded ring that then steps up to a T-mount thread size. We don't offer anything like that, so I'd recommend contacting the people who make the Neximage to see if they offer any solutions.

Actually, if you use the built in wedge, and put the scope in EQ mode, you can do long term exposures. However, for AP, a German Equatorial Mount is the better choice. That particular scope, though, may not have the built in wedge, I can't tell.

The mount is not designed for long term photography. It is possible to adapt it for such, with something called a Wedge, but in the setup it's using now, you'll have something called field rotation that will happen in less than a minute. Nebulae and Galaxies usually require much longer exposure times, 3-5 minutes, and multiple shots. You may take 20 three minute shots and then 'stack' them.

I assume you know the mount can track celestrial bodies. If you set it up correctly you should be able to find up to 40,000 different objects to look at and there's no need to keep moving the scope, it moves automatically to keep the object in frame. You should be able to download the manual for the mount plus even software to use it all with a laptop or tablet.

I definitely want to try that - I've only noodled with the telescope a little bit since I got it. I've got a cousin who is an astronomer and he showed me all the amazing things you can do with a tracking head like this one. Thanks for the encouraging reminder to explore more!

Basically they make lenses with the mirror design 500mm/1000mm fixed f8 for cameras. I have an opteka 500 with duplifier so it becomes 1000. They come with Tmount adapters and are light weight and under 100$

Watch out, putting so much weight at an extremity of an etx. I put a nikon d70s on it, after a couple of times, I managed to knock out the mirrors out of alignment. double imagery. Yikes. I was very very careful, at all times. Just more expense on realigning etcetera. Not respecting laws of physics is expensive & inconvenient. Happy shooting, clear skies 😷🌈

The only, but epic problem with this telescope... 1250/90 - F13.9. Too dark to shoot anything with optimal ISO. But it's perfect to learn. Especially for that money.
@michal_king478
@michal_king478 4 жыл бұрын
Meade also makes the etx70 which is a refractor (no mirrors just lenses) which is 350/70 so F5. the etx90 has such a high focal length because the primary mirror at the back of the scope reflects the light onto a secondary mirror in the front which then reflects it all the way into the back.

@@michal_king478 have you attempted planetary pictures with the etx70 (assuming that you own one)?
@michal_king478
@michal_king478 3 жыл бұрын
@@allenbaylus1912 Ive tried the moon but no planets. Its really not an instrument suited for it. For planets you need focal lengths on the order of thousands of mm so the 1250/90 is a much better suited instrument for it. And even better would be a dobsonian, the biggest you can get assuming you cant afford a large schmidt-cassegrain as those cost thousands. For planets or the moon, you dont really need the motorised mount. It makes the job easier but investing in bigger optics instead pays off more. the etx 70 is better suited for wide field deep sky photography and some modest pictures of the moon. Though expect to get some chromatic aberration with it unless you shoot narrowband images

@@michal_king478 I have an older LX80 but it is bulky and heavy and not that easy to set up. I bought (perhaps 5 years ago) the ETX-90 for the kids. I was thinking about trying to use the ETX-90 for tracking for longer term exposures for photography.
@michal_king478
@michal_king478 3 жыл бұрын
@@allenbaylus1912 its worth trying. I reckon you could get like 10 seconds long exposures out of it. Though the Focal ratio is quite limmiting. But on things like the core of the orion nebula or some double stars and other very bright objects, I think it should work
