Shooting with the Polaroid SX-70 and their new film

After being disappointed with the old Impossible Project instant film, I decided to give the new formula another go in my trusty SX-70 to see what the improvements were.

You do not have a model 3. Model 3 is not an SLR. You look straight through the viewfinder on a 3. Someone swapped the front section with the rollers to your camera.

I was a bit confused when I was researching, but assumed mine was with the text on it. I guess it got replaced at one point.

@@NickSmithPhoto If you want more info about your specific camera then you can look up your serial number using a website and it will tell you the specs, I did it with mine and found out that mine was produced in 1974 and some other info. The serial number is located above the film door release button and next to the view finder. If you’re having troubles finding it then you can find some photos showing the location online. Hope this helps 😁.

Polaroid film has really improved in the last 2 years I have been shooting it!

Also have to agree that the color film has improved.....the B&W is pretty good.....almost as good as the real old stuff-----I used a lot of type 55 b&w---

@@NickSmithPhoto Main issue with the new film is the clear Mylar material used for each photo is thicker than it was on the older film. You can fit 10 in a single pack, but the issue becomes that it’s quite tight and it causes the images to bulge slightly. I’ve managed to shoot 10 photos in an i-Type pack with no real issues, though. It’s likely to keep costs down a bit. They could fit 9 but that’s an odd number and marketing wise maybe an issue?

Why do you have blue marks at the bottom of the picture in some photos? I keep having the same problem. Love your video 😊

Hi Matheo, the blue marks are most likely due to the chemicals being unevenly spread across the exposed image. This can be cause by dirt on the rollers or just from the cameras being old.

@@NickSmithPhoto For sure. I just got my first instant camera. So I'm pretty new to all of it. If i had one question which I was struggling to find an answer to, when is it appropriate to chose a higher or lower exposure? (3 settings, normal, low, and high)

@@michael_177 unfortunately I don’t really have a straight forward answer. From my understanding, due to the age of old Polaroid cameras, the exposure can vary from to the next. All I can say, is experiment with yours and see what results you get.

Everything about modern Polaroid is great other than the annoying 15min development time. I don't expect it to be as fast as instax but I feel by this point they would've found a way to get fully developed color photos under 10 mins

yeah - same. coz that's what people expect from INSTANT photos. and that's how Instax are. i like to sit and watch the magic unfold - but not for 15 minutes. however, Polaroids struggle is with the opacifier layer. the picture itself is developed and done within a minute. it's just that the layer that protects it from light hides it for far too long. thay have not yet figured out how to make it turn transparent quicker.

Wow which camera you used to film the video? Any LUT or post processing?

I just use fuji, because I had heard they were ok for videography. I don’t really do any processing do pretty much straight out of the camera.

I probably haven't shot enough to give a confident answer. However I think I read somewhere that you should always try and keep them warm once you've shot a frame. So I just stick it in my inside coat pocket.

I think the B&W film is superior to the color, but they have both come a long way!!!!

B&W definitely seems more flexible in getting results.

Get yourself a model 1 or alpha model’s before the model 3. Or, try and find a Sonar model which were being produced in 1978. I have a 1974 model 1, which I absolutely love, and 2 Sonar models. One from 1978 and the other from 1981, which are also amazing cameras because you can switch them to focus manually also. Once you learn how to use them with the newest film, exposure compensation and lighting, you will have at least 90 % success or better results with your images. The photos you showed in this video were excellent, I loved them. If you got yourself one of the cameras I mentioned, you’ll have 98% success rate for sure. It is a learning curve and an expensive one at that. But once you get it, you’ll be the man….

There’s nothing stopping you from opening the camera with a pack inside, but I would definitely advise not to.

yes,you can take out the film. but you must do it in absolute darkness. and you must put the darkslide back in on top of the first frame. to protect the film from being exposed to light and also because once you insert it back into the camera it will spit out the first frame. that means you must know you camera and the film cassett by heart to do all that blind. so you better practice with an empty one before you try. or you just waste a frame. whatever is best for you.
