Suggestion Stuart, another time put the part down in the vice as low as you can to get a bigger gripping surface area. Idealy too as you did not know how square or flat the sides were, just put a piece of round rod under it say 3/16 or 1/4 which would alow the part to settle into alignment. There was a good chance that both of the parallels were not making full contact when you bunged in the block before machining. When there is too much snow for you to go down the shed, have a look on YT for videos on how to square up an unknown or sawn block. Another tip to to save a lot of burr filing is to cut from the outside of the part towards the centre, thus not generating the burr. Regards from Australia.

Thank you Dave. I should also have done at least a cursory square / flat check before starting also. These details are what make the difference when it comes to achieving a level of precision. I will check the part and see how square it is just for completeness.

You'll be glad to know I was a lot more thorough when I cleaned the sides of the spin indexer - I got those really square - I took a long time over that. It was an awkward part to set up in fact.

I assume you had already cleaned up the front and rear edges of the spin indexer? I guess indexing off the shaft would be the best start? Great stuff.

@@836dmar excellent question. On this unit the front and rear surfaces were already machined when the unit arrived. I clocked a pin in the spindexer after clamping in the vise to make sure those surfaces were accurate. Thanks for your question and for looking in!

Are you selling these? I also don't like tapping the vise with the dti stylus touching so I tap away from the stylus and not into it.

Shed! Shed he says 😂😅😅😂. Back here in the UK we tried to demolish an old concrete garage of about 500sq/ft and build a new concrete one of 800sq/ft. Planning says, you can't build in concrete. You can't make it wider or longer OR taller. So we pulled out of buying the property. Still trying to find somewhere that I can build an 800-1,000sq/ft workshop.
