Back in 95 I had twist lacing on my Elf Doublecross with Bullseye hubs and Sun Mistral hoops done by Dans Comp. It was offered as an option for more strength at that time. I raced every weekend and when I wasn't racing, we were hitting the dirt jumps we built, and I never had an issue with them.

I did exactly what you said back in the early 80's... removing two nipples at a time, single twist, and the wheels were bulletproof and maintenance free for racing.

Single twist looks to be the more common wheel I've seen. I've always wanted to do this. It's getting done.

I remember having a snowflake poverty front wheel on one of my old bikes, I had to put tennis balls in the wheel to make it more stronger 👍🚲💨

6:33 I would never trust snowflake spoke pattern on a back wheel, don’t think it’s strong enough and the wheel would fold I think 👍🚲💨

Oh how you fix it is a dent puller get a grade 5 bolt in the end of it make a round jig and you need a model to copy and dent pull at the around angle for that hole give a good hard bang on the 7-10pound puller on the aluminum rim and it will bend the hole slightly in that direction bang tapered hole stress on the nipples mostly gone give it a try worked for me and looks factory if you’re not crazy with it, it will take a few bangs to figure out how much strength use for your rim so start small and you’ll get it

Hi there Phu, each twist will reduce the spoke length by roughly 1mm. Multiplies of 2 twists are better than an odd number of twists too as the spokes keep there same line as if laced without the twist.
@JoeBernard10
@JoeBernard10 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the pattern. I've missed by as much as 20mm on some I've done but they are on 700c with much more weaves.
@michaelfowell223
@michaelfowell223 Жыл бұрын
@@JoeBernard10 Yes the lacing pattern also changes the spoke length, on a 36 spoked wheel 3x, if you go to 4 cross you have to add 10mm in length. But I find generally if you work out the correct length of spoke for hub and rim combination and which cross pattern you prefer then the number of twists you use say 4, just add 4mm to the spoke length and your good go. I tend to go from a 12 mm nipple the 14mm just for that extra bit of leeway too.👍

So is it best to twist 2 times over 4? And 5 twist will not bring back the spoke to its original whole? Correct
@michaelfowell223
@michaelfowell223 Жыл бұрын
@@jackand100others3 Multiples of 2 twists are better, so 2,4,6 etc but I have used odd numbers in past usually 3, and while its probably not ideal I haven't had any issues with them, I must add though that Ive been building wheels professionally for nearly 30 years now and I am at the rank of master wheel builder.👍😊

I think I,ll stick with the regular way of lacing a rim . What I use to do is lace a rim the original regular way & where the spokes cross each other I would put zip ties around both of them really tight . There’s 2 points on spokes that give you strength , the straight sup & down points & where each set of spokes cross , adding the tight zip ties keeps the spokes from flexing making the whole set up really rigid & tough & that’s what you want in a rim set up , it just means you rim set up can take more of a beating from jumps & it stiffens up the whole thing .
@TimMcVey

I did that too. Then I took a wheel, and did a simple twist. Undo two spokes, and just to one twist sending them to the opposite hole you took them from. Nipples lined up. Wheels were bulletproof. Trued them once... and were maintenance free after that.
