👍That was cool! Thx for showing us. My 1st job (before my “real”’education) was @ a huge local downtown Louisville KY hotel in maintenance-engineering dept. The presidential suite plumbing was heavy nickel plated brass. Fittings were simply beautiful for plumbing & I learned that one can easily mar up a fine finish very fast if not using proper tools. I believe also used on boats-ships in salty climate. Since then I’ve kept a certain kind of appreciation for such high quality nickel, yellow brass & #1 copper sheeting that was used back in the day. Thank you Sir Lyle.

I used to plate silver on fishing lure parts with silver to give a spinning blade more flash as it traveled through the water. I used a salt water solution, a 9 volt battery and a piece of a silver spoon bought at a garage sale. It worked great and saved me much money making my own baits versus buying them at a sporting goods store.

Your story about the stolen nickel rods reminded me of an incident. A large machine shop stored a lot of their material outside. They secured it with a chain link fence. Someone broke in and stole some sheets of aluminum, several hundred pounds. I've observed in my life that most criminals are stupid. True to that, they took the aluminum to a nearby scrap yard and used their real name. The machine shop called around asking for plate aluminum. When they found it, they met the police there. They had all the printed info from the aluminum, heat numbers and whatnot to prove it was theirs. The owner of the yard was steaming mad but was forced to return it.

Your video is four years old now so I hope you’re still having fun at your bench. I’m just getting into this fascinating process in hopes of learning how to protect objects from oxidation as well as beautify, as you say. I am just into my seventies and had to laugh at your “living dangerously.” I suppose we both need to choose a bit more caution, but I’ve had a good life and tend not to concern myself as much about the long term so much anymore. I’ve had some luck with nickel plating on a small scale but more failures than successes. At this point I’m like a guy in a dark room with one minute to find a pencil on the floor so need to study up more. Thank you for all the cogent details so well presented. All my best to you.

In 1968 after the Navy, I got a job working at an electroplating plant (small shop). Plating copper tips for soldering pencils with iron. After two years of experience in using this plating system, a new engineer became the overseer of our process. It was common to take a tip that has been plated with iron and heat it with a torch and bend it in a horseshoe shape. The engineer would example it via a magnifying glass to see if any imperfections. He insisted that there were imperfections on the tip. Now I had to completely remove all the iron via sulfuric acid from the copper tips and redo the plating again. Three hours later I took to the engineer a tip that had been heated and bent for examination. He looked at it and said that’s better. What he didn’t know it was the very same tip that I show him 3 hours ago.

Thank you for the demonstration! I used this technique to zinc plate the original fasteners and smaller steel pieces on the '1970 vintage Triumph Tiger I'm restoring. I used a solution of white vinegar, epsom salts and sugar (from a formula that I found on some plating how-to-group) and four 1.5 volt batteries or single 9-volt. All very inexpensive. The bubbling was quite apparent (more of an effervescent bubbling than a boiling bubbling) so I'm not sure why you didn't witness it except for possibly actually using only 2 to 2-1/2 volts. Take note that you can overdo it with zinc. If left too long (more than several hours) it will actually accumulate a zinc crust rather than a plating. Then you have to wire-wheel the any male threads and chase any female threads with a Whitworth tap and start over. The zinc plating does appear a little dull right out of the soup, but it quite easily buffs to a nice shine that lasts.

hey my friends and I nickle plate brass jewery for a living and if you heat up the solution in a hot pan or microwave it helps it from flaking off and it gives it a very bright shine, also if u give it some circulation like with a fish tank pump it plates like in 3 or 4 minutes.. i think that the needle on reader was moving because the copper wire on wood stick wasent clipped on right. i hope this helps..

Mr. Pete, greetings from N.C. and thanks for another great video. I worked in a plant for twenty years that did triple chrome plating on brass autoclave doors and a ferrous parts for medical equipment. The three are copper, nickel and chrome. Parts were highly polished, chemically cleaned and washed and came out of the final tank with a mirror finish. The best chrome plating always include nonporous nickel to seal the base surface to prevent corrosion. Cheaper plating on ferrous that omits nickel will eventually rust through the porous chrome.

Another great video! Seeing the Simpson 260 is a blast from the past for me, the Simpson 260 was the first piece of test equipment that I ever owned. My father bought it for me at age twelve, I still have it today. An uncle gave me a Philmore crystal radio at age 10 and I was hooked on electronics, I still have radio also. I started learning to fly when I was in high school, after I earned my private pilot certificate the multi engine was next then the Instrument rating, At a nearby airport KPVG a company flew a Beech 18 that was immaculate, most Beech 18 had been turned into freighters, however this one was better than the day it flew away from Wichita. The pilot liked to electro plate with gold. Everything in that airplane that could be plated was plated in gold. From knobs and levers, ashtrays, I flew with him for about a hundred hours. That airplane was sold, and was replaced with a King Air E-90 I flew that airplane for about 60-70 hours. I always hung around adults and stayed out of trouble and picked up life’s learning experiences at a young age.i am now still a kid at age 63. I wish you were my neighbor Lyle growing up. I would have learned so much. Thank you for all the hard work you put into these videos

Caswell makes our cold bluing solutions gel and liquid versions. We are building our own set up for this project, heard already about this rust issue. Plating plants are tough many visits, know the smell from inspections of our machined parts in those days, it was amazing so many tanks and hangers and racks wow neat to visit not too much to work in daily. Funny we watched this video form back then but did not need to learn this process then Lyle. Hoping you are having a GREAT summer 2019. Highlights flaws it is a mirror effect. It was mentioned below, the nickle is in the solution. I believe when they chrome plate parts, first the plate with copper, then nickle, then finally with chrome. Plating with silver, nickle or gold are simple and they do car badges with it. They just have a wand with a cotton ball on it, then touch the shiny part of the badge with an electrode, and wipe the wet(with whatever plating solution) over the part to make it gold. I don't think most plating is too dangerous except for chrome plating, as the acid used to hold the chrome in solution is very caustic and the out gas is deadly. Great video by the way.

I remember seeing the plating plant at Mira Showers in the 90's. They were plating the brass shower valve bodies. They used copper plating followed by polishing they did this because the copper would fill in all the very small imperfections. the valve bodies were then nickle plated and then chrome plated, the nickle was used because chrome will not take very well to the copper but would take to nickle.

Great video I can see allot of items around Mr Pete's house becoming shiny. There are many applications in the machining hobby where metal plating comes in handy. If you want to tighten up the fit of a shaft in a bore, you can get a real close fit. Require a surface that is long wearing. Corrosion protect. Allot of the early automobile trim was Nickle plated instead of Chrome. I actually think Nickle looks better. Has a softer look. Cheers Willy

I am watching as I am plating in the garage. 1. You can easily make your own plating solution using household vinegar and some salt to increase the conductivity. Both anode and cathode would be nickel. When the solution turns green (about 1/2 hour) you are ready to go. 2. To plate, make sure, as you said, that the piece to be plated is as polished and perfect as you can get it. If you use Scotchbrite or abrasive paper you will have scratches, so use a buffer to make it as good as you want the finished product. 3. Negative lead to piece to be plated, and positive to nickel source. You used strips, I use old Canadian nickels which are 99.9% nickel. NOT ALL NICKELS ARE! Judge your time by the look of the finished piece. When you are happy, do a little more and your are done. Really simple and fun. In my case, it cost me an old nickel, which will do many jobs, and some vinegar. Remember, NEGATIVE to piece you want to plate. Bubbles will form on piece you are plating. Counterintuitive, but there you are! Thanks for great video!

Back when I was an apprentice machinist one of the journeymen had to make a wind tunnel model nose cone that was thin wall so they could get the temperature distribution over the outside surface with thermocouples mounted on the inside. He made the model 1/16" undersize out of aluminum then it went out for playing. They first copper plated the aluminum because the nickel wouldn't stick to the aluminum then plated the copper with the nickel until the plate was over 1/16" thick but the surface was covered in what looked like "warts" . He machined it down to the required size polished it up and it looked great. I've been thinking about making metal models using a plastic model playing with copper then dissolving the plastic out and playing the inside with nickel and disolving the copper off the nickel and I would be left with a model only made out of metal. Thank you Mr. Pete love your channel😀

Interesting stuff. I was also impressed with the look of the punch when it came out of the solution. I'm sure you can get the 2 main ingredients on eBay or somewhere cheaper than buying it with the kit. Be advised the nickel sulfate is said to be a carcinogen, so always wear the latex gloves and use in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside. You can get it in crystal form, but don't breathe in any of the dust. Not sure what to mix it with, probably distilled water? A potential source for the nickel is pre-1982 Canadian nickels, which are said to be .999 nickel. Some french francs are the same. Or just search for nickel bullion.

I think the photographic technique to which you refer @ 18:44 is the use of a 'light box' or 'light tent'. It is a usually a wireframe or cardboard box cube with white translucent material draped all around with a curved piece (of white paper, cardboard or material) behind and under the item and a single opening through which you place the item and photograph through. The light illuminates the material from the outside so all the material is evenly lit inside and kills most of the shadows on the item to be photographed. Super easy to make.

Also, now that you have the kit (which is just the wall wart, so you can also do this with batteries) you can also do copper at home. Use copper wire or a copper bar as the anode, and use copper sulfate pentahydrate as the solution. You can get copper sulfate at the hardware store as plumbing root killer. It's a blue crystal. Just mix it with water and set it up the same way. Do this one in a well ventilated area, as it off gasses sulfur dioxide.

I really enjoyed this video mrpete! I purchased a gold plating kit a few yrs ago (I haven't used it yet) it came with a gold solution that is clear and you use a swab to "paint" the gold on a item you could hang it like you did but the kit only comes with a small jar of gold solution so it would need to be a very small item- the directions say to remove any chrome plate (came with chrome stripper) then reactivate the nickel before applying the gold- the video shows gold plating a kitchen sprayer (22crt) I am going to give it a try after watching your video cuz I forgot I even had it lol you could probably buy the gold solution and use your set up & make a cotten tipped swab to apply, oops looks like I got carried away with this comment- Great Video mrpete! 2 thumbs up

Explanation for fluctuating voltage: Tiny bubbles cover the workpiece, reducing the surface to the liquid and therefore increasing the resistance. The bubbles grow larger and finally break loose and the surface to the liquid increases again, reducing the resistance. This process starts over and over again.

I just got the stuff but I didn't use a kit. I decided to get the 44 x 1.24-inch rolls, not as thick but it's easier to mess with cutting. I've plated before but with zinc. Over time I'm going to be plating a lot of parts but not high volume so I got a magnetic stir and lab bars to help knock the bubbles off. I got a thick plastic box that will hold about 2 gallons. Some of those cheap wall chargers are noisy you might want to put a filter cap of about 1000uf across them but if you put the polarity on backward those things will pop and smoke, it's kind of fun to watch but wear safety glasses. I blew up a bag of capacitors just for fun.

I have never seen an electropated finish delaminate from metal, only from plastics. Chrome, on the other hand, is infamous for peeling off even when professionally done. I have been gruesomely sliced twice by peeling chrome, the separated 'flakes' are viciously sharp, jagged, and usually corroded from the base metal on the backside. I'll take the nickel finish every time I have a choice.

Buffed up in the lathe (to get rid of the machining marks), then plated, it would look really smart, with the spring loaded point still blued, just like blued sights look smart on a nickel plated pistol.

Tubalcain, instead of using your plug in power supply, I'd use a fully charged 12 volt car battery, which would probably produce the bubbles you were so looking forward to see, and a much thicker plating rate over one thou per hour. With a much larger amperage available, the plating process is much quicker/thicker.

Neat! Not too surprised you couldn't measure the thickness, it's probably only atoms thick. Practically speaking, I wonder if zinc plating would provide more corrosion protection vs nickle (at the cost of prettiness).

Have been nice to have weighed the copper cold rolled steel strips as well as nickel strips to measure the change in weight. Would also be interesting to see what the current draw was.

I had a peace of nickel plated cast iron from a old gas stove made in the 1940,s probably, and it was stored outside in full weather for 2 years and never rusted one bit , I took a rag and rubbed the dirt off it and it shined bright and perfect . It had very good nickel plating , probably very thick , not like the things that are made today with just enough plating to give the product color and start to rust the first time it gets wet . I like nickel plated things better than chrome plated things . Nickel plating has a warmer tone when polished . This is a easer way to plate things in a home shop . Factory,s usual copper plate first coat under the second coat chrome plate . I have been told that some times the copper plating is then buffed to make the surface smoother before the second chrome plating step to give a better finish . I did some copper plating as a kid and used copper sulfate power and water for the solution , and it has a pretty blue/ green color something like what you used , might be the same or similar . I would guess that what you used has some copper sulfate in it by the color .

The green solution is probably Nickel acetate solution made by electrolytic meand in white vinegar. It's quite safe and can easily be made at home. The solution improves as you plate more. A better way of hanging the bell punch is to take stout copper wire bend a 'U' shape for about 10mm and push it into the screw hole giving a positive electrical and mechanical connection as well as allowing the screwed hole to plate. When plating steel it is better to plate with copper first with electrolytically home made copper acetate solution with copper and white vinegar.

I have used this same stuff from them work great i done a 1911 45 pistol but to get a great finish you have to have a very clean polish job and a good cleaner for the metal no finger prints and correct amperage and volts and time in chemical will do a great job if done this way ps if you want a pic ill gladly send Duane

Thank you Now ive learned to clean rust off of tools and cast iron cookware via electroless, and now i know how to how to plate by electoless. So far in rust removal ive used a plastic trash can, battery charger, an old brake rotor, and borax laundry soap for solution. Do this outside and please cover trash can with lid so you wont need to rescue cat out of solution. There was no rust to be found on cat. Thanks again, M L Rogers Pasadena, TX

Just using the "see how far it will go" principle, I would have had to make some attempt at buffing that bell. The results you got are pretty impressive, knowing it could have been better would haunt me :). Nothing fancy - a battery drill holding a rod that would just go through the hole ... tighten the screw and spin ... a bit of spin and polish using some reasonable grit emery ... say 4, 6 and 800 .... just a minute each grit ... then see how it turned out.

Dealing with all of those chemicals commercially is difficult. I worked at a place that hard chrome plated printing press dies and let's just say we didn't dispose of spent solutions in the most ecological manner. It involved some flushing. Chromium flakes are rather pretty. We had 55 gallon drums of them.

Final cleaning by boiling in powdered dishwater detergent is also very effective. Also, starting nickel plating, removing the part for inspection, then staring to plate again is inadvisable. Don't try to plate in stages unless you 'reactivate' the surfaces each time. There are additives that promote a uniform 'gloss' finish versus a flat marked finish.; 'Bright' versus 'Dull' nickel.

Love these results, really gave that punch some good looks-! Ive never done this, but it looks very similar to the principle you've used to remove rust-? I wonder what the difference might be with a 6 or 12 volt battery charger instead of the wall wart-? I imagine the process would speed up, might see some bubbles then-lol Some good suggestions below from other commenters on how to obtain the materials at lower cost, also a higher quality better regulated power supply is suggested but wow great results without an expensive trip to a plating co.

Sir, just subscribed, thank you for making these great videos. I particularly like the electrolysis ones. I have tried Oxalic Acid/Water on Aluminum wheels to remove corrosion with decent results. I soaked them overnight, rinsed, and coated with WD40 until I can give them a clear coat. Not sure if you have tried using Oxalic Acid as a rust remover yet, but I would sure like to see that on one of your episodes. I will keep looking through your videos, in case you have already made one. Thanks again for the great videos.

Oxalic acid is good for removing rust also good for removing iron stains on wood,... it is toxic in concentrations used for rust removal, and wood bleaching ,.. use gloves, adequate ventilation, and then wash everything in water a lot. I wonder if it may have uses in plating?
