In this video I talk about a potential axe build give away as suggested by ‪@MountainMenAxes‬ for when reach 1000 subscribers and what type of build I should do for it. I also oil and show my first 36" house handle that I am sending to ‪@_BigLife_‬ for him to use on a future project.

I'll always vote for cleaning up the dirtiest one - if for no other reason than because the contrast is so satisfying.

I think this exact reason is partially why this hobby is addictive for me. Regardless of what axe gets chosen for the giveaway there will be lots more heads getting cleaned up in the future!

Hey Josh, I really like this idea too. I think the pitted and charred handle combo goes so well together. Even if the plumb Connie isn't picked for the giveaway, I may need to do this build!

I like the 1000 subscriber axe giveaway. Most people love the Connecticut patterns. So to have that as a giveaway axe someone is going to really love getting that thing. I definitely like it. The Kelly Dayton would be another fantastic option. Going through the process of cleaning it up and hanging it on your channel under the idea of the giveaway axe. Regardless I appreciate the kindness and shoutout buddy.
@Nsvens89
@Nsvens89 2 ай бұрын
You are very welcome for the shout out and thank you for planting the idea in my head. The Connie is definitely a less common pattern but the TrueTemper Dayton is definitely in better condition. Even if the Dayton isn't the "fan favorite" I will likely do a video on finishing it up eventually lol. It would definitely make for a fun build.

That paper label plumb does seem to be a crowd favorite. Without doing an official count, I think it's winning! I appreciate you watching and giving your thoughts. Stay tuned for the build!

Paper label Rockaway. Don't know whether you want to give it away or sell it...but it would make for a fine build either way. That thing wants a handle in the worst way! Beautiful job on the handle BTW. I prefer raw linseed oil (no drying chemicals). I heat the wood with a heat gun...then saturate with warm RLO until the wood stops drinking...it may take a few heats. Once cool...wipe off excess oil, then let it dry for a few weeks before hard use. The end result is the softest feeling handles...unlike any other oil finish I've ever used! On kitchen knives and cutting boards I use the food grade flaxseed (linseed) version...same process.

Thanks man I do plan on going with the paper label plumb. I haven't tried raw linseed oil yet. I may need to pick some up. I have tried walnut oil which is another polymerizing oil that's food safe.

Really enjoying your videos and information about axes and tools. All the axes for a possible giveaway are great if I had too only chose one it would have to be the Kelly perfect Michigan pattern phantom bevel. They just look so good and cleaned up and possibly blued look so great. Also would be a great splitting axe and or felling depending on sharpening technique. Thank you for spending time out of your day to create these enjoyable videos!

A giveaway sounds like a great idea - your at 729 as I type this so 1000 isn't far off! The rusty Legitimus would be my choice because I'd love to have one of your modified HH handles with that beautiful scroll palm swell! I'm working on one in the shop now and have been reviewing your methods. I don't think I'm going to get that crisp break line on this first attempt, but it looks better than the big bulb it came with and it's feeling good in the hand! I have a couple Flint Edges like that heavy one - they're 4lbs and stamped U.S.A. which I think in this case is US Army from WWII or Vietnam. I also have a monster one that is 5lb 3oz! It's geometry looks the same as the 4lb ones, but it's super-sized. On the side opposite the Flint Edge stamp it is stamped Wabash RR.
@Nsvens89
@Nsvens89 Ай бұрын
Thanks for voting Chad! That's awesome that you're giving the HH shape up a try. It takes a little practice but I think it's well worth the time spent with the rasps and files. As long as it's fitting good in the hand that's what matters. Esthetics come second 👍. I believe you are spot on with the USA stamped Flint Edges. I've seen a number of them online still sporting the old OD green paint. I do think the Dayton is an underrated pattern! Connecticuts and jerseys get a lot of the attention but the Dayton certainly holds it's own in my book. Let me know how the handle comes out when you finish it. I would love to see it!

Personally I would like to see you make your own handle since you're so good at reshaping the house handle. If not then the widest bit jersey you got!

Hey man! I agree it's definitely high time I did a full handle carve on the channel. I do have a little ash and some hickory that would be suitable for one. I will certainly mull this idea over. I think the big paper label is a good choice for it too. It's super clean and a full bit. It deserves to be hung.
@_BigLife_

I would say the Dayton just to see you finish it😅 the fantom bevel Michigan or round lug jersey would be awesome as well. And thank you so much 35" to 36" is a sweet spot for me. I will definitely have to hand one we traded for.

Thats a tricky one, they'd all make a pretty good user axe! Had to pick one though, id say the 3,2 plumb would suit a 28 really well, or the bevelled Michigan
@Nsvens89
@Nsvens89 2 ай бұрын
Thanks Kurt! I appreciate the input! I figured the 3² plumb would be getting more attention! I wonder if the pitting is driving people to other options. The beveled Kelly perfect seems to be a strong contender! We will see.

Oh to follow up on our last convo, from your last video - blu-ing an axe you may have ruined with a grinding flap disc LOL…I would love to see a blu-ing process video! I wouldn’t even know where to start LOL. Also, is there an email you use? I don’t have socials but recently got somethings you may like? And I know there is an axe or two you “don’t need” anymore as per past videos I have been interested in…I know you like plumb, and craftsman - that Plumb Connie, I have the same axe so I would LOVE to see your version of what you would do with it! Thanks man! Keep doing what you’re doing!

Yeah you can absolutely shoot me an email at nsvensen89@gmail.com my Instagram is all axe and tool stuff I usually just direct folks there to chat because the message aspect is easier but email absolutely works too. Thanks for weighing in on the give away build! The results are spread pretty evenly so far. I'm curious if any will pull ahead the longer the video is up.

Love the long 36”. I don’t prefer them and have a bunch of old ones kickin around from old Kelly and true temper axes which seem to always be on 36”. Love that mystery ct looks similar to a handful of my older New England heads. I actually think it might be something other than Connie. Pre Connie if you will.

Thanks Ryan!! I'm happy with how the handle came out and excited to see what my buddy thinks of it. That mystery "Connie" could definitely be something else. I absolutely agree the geometry does seem to be slightly off from a lot of the others I have. I did also get it from the same guy who i got the diamond eye DB from. He had some other wedge patterns at his booth too. He could have been from up that way more. I'm with you on not favoring a 36 in handle. My sweet spot is usually 28" to 32"
