Costco has a pricing policy of limiting markups on branded products to a maximum of 14% above cost and up to 15% on Costco brands. That is why they are often but not always the lowest price, especially for name brands that they carry. Food items however like fuits and vegetables are often used as loss leaders (sold below cost) by competing stores and chains. Many chains ( but not Costco) have much higher markups on many other items and make their profit on those while using loss making veggie prices to get you into the store. Costco makes most of its profits from the annual memberships. Costco has donation agreements with charity food banks and so very very little fresh food goes to waste.

Also when you see name brand items on special ( marked down price) the manufacturer is supporting the lower price. When you see Costco items marked down more than 15% off, Costco is taking a loss. This usually happens when there is an upcoming change to the product, like a changed packaging, or a new supplier. How do I know all this ( am I making it up?) Relative was a member of management at a Costco location. 🙂

Thank you for your website as a person with a physical disability, who only joined a Costco in QLD a few months ago, I know look forward to watching your site each week. My adult daughter and I have only been in together once and I wondered what the wording “ Instant rebate meant? “ I said “ No “ “ I bet it means we have to send a docket into the manufacturer , just like white goods discounts.” I am guessing now after watching your video and you commenting on the lasagna it equals the same as sale price? Am I correct? Thank you
