Don't ever trust this guy of the quantity of seeds in each pack. I got my order from him last week. Every seed packet I opened had more seeds than labeled on the packages. Recently I bought 10 seeds from MIgardener. The quality and price are unbeatable. He omitted unnecessary fancy looking packing instead put more seeds in the pack. The seeds look very healthy and a lot. Only one thing to comment is there is no written information about seed, like when to sow or soil ph etc. which is ok because if you watch his KZbin video, he explains very well and you will learn more than about the seeds. I'm so happy to have bought the seeds from him. I planted some of the seeds in the seed starter. I'll see what will happen. Thanks Luke for your passion for gardening and helping people through your work.

I bought sees from several sources this year. My Dad once told me that whenever possible obtain seeds from more than one source in case of germination failure. He suggested sowing from two or more batches of the same thing. I tried this. I bought seeds from Dollar tree at 25 cents per package and I bought sees from Burpee at around $3 a package and a few others in between. I did not buy anything by mail as I prefer to read the package before I buy and sellers on the internet tend not to give much information. What I found was little to no difference in germination rates for the same varieties. The plants are not much different. 75% germination for Better Boy tomatoes in both cases and the plants are indistinguishable. The only difference between the contents seems to be quantity. I got 27 pea seeds from American Seed sold in Dollar Tree for 25 cents and I got about 121 seeds from Burpee for $2.95 at Walmart. If I needed 121 pea seeds then buying five packages of American Seed would have cost me $1.25 and that is still a better deal. American seed has the same warranty that Burpee has so I see no point paying more for the same variety. The only other difference besides quantity and price is that Burpee and other major suppliers have greater variety.

My wife was a business major in college and I helped her study, so I'm familiar with much of what you had to say. That was why when I initially shopped around for seed I checked a number of sources, and I've increased the number of vendors I have bookmarked since. So I shopped around. Another tip is to do your research and know what varieties you want to plant next season, and then compare among venders keeping in mind that the seed you get will most likely come from seed plants acclimated to where ever they grow their stock. I bought before the new catalogs came out. There is still a variety of tomato I would like to get, but it won't be cheap. But, then, I know that going in. I bought from you to support your new business because I'm a subscriber and like you. That your prices were reasonable didn't hurt matters either. Because of my situation I don't have a lot of room to garden to start off with, so even on my limited budget the price of the seeds aren't critical at this point and I can pay a little more to get exactly what I want. But why pay more if I don't ave to? That's why I check around. Nice video. It probably wouldn't have hurt for you to mention the companies you've found the best to deal with. You don't have every variety out there in your store and customers usually appreciate "referrals" to companies likely to have what they want that you don't have. That helps build customer loyalty as well. That's a little something I learned while I was able to work.
@MIgardener10 жыл бұрын
Stanley Loper hey, you definitely win some and lose some. I bought seed at full price as well for a few of my varieties, and I don't mind much.
@beinbrek10 жыл бұрын
***** That's for sure. The tomato I'm going to have to pay a bit more for are the Indigo blues. You had a few when you started your store. But I missed getting them from you by about a day. There was a reason I didn't get them when I first saw them, I was waiting for my money. I plan on growing three varieties of cherry tomatoes next year for salads. I wanted each to be different color. I already have one red and a yellow, but when I found out about the indigos, I wanted to make them the third one. I've found a site which will cost more in total, but the unit price will be close to what you were selling them for. he idea, if I can pull it off, is to use the tomatoes to add the colors to our salads.

How about looking at it this way----> You say save money on seeds Right? But my most expensive seed pack cost me about $3.00 and I received about 20 seeds for that dollar amount. I grew that variety last year and saved seeds from the fruit now I have about 200+ seeds for three dollars and that was off one plant...I guess its how you look at it... your glass can be half full or half empty....I buy my seeds at the end of every season they seem to be the cheapest then. Good tips though
@MIgardener10 жыл бұрын
But see, there is the kicker. Most don't save their seed, and most are not experienced enough to get the most out of those 20 seeds. The average person who gets 20 seeds will be lucky if they get 8 plants to maturity. It is a sad but true fact.
@TerryMcGinn10 жыл бұрын
***** Midwest Gradening That's true enough and there are some plants that are very easy to save seeds from - tomatoes, beans and lettuce for example - that people really can save money by buying once and then saving seeds from there on. That doesn't, however, mean that Luke's suggestion is any less valid. Why not save money on those first 20 seeds too?! I mean, yeah, it might be the only 20 seeds of that variety that you ever buy (it shouldn't be, even if you do save seeds), but that doesn't mean that you should over pay for them, either.

HyunJong Kim I am so glad you found my message to be truthful and of value to you. Thank you
@workwithnature10 жыл бұрын
Hi Luke, Nice video ;) So true in regards to buy enough seeds. Most of the time one gets only a minimum. Barely enough to grow any reasonable quantity for the year. You just end up buying several packets. This is even more so true if you want to keeping that population going year after year yourself. As you know yourself you buy a nice sweet corn variety that did well in your garden only to find out later those ten seeds you got in the first place did not suffice. Your population dwindles some years later and sadly you can't get that variety again as the company discontinued it. This can happen a lot. Trust me as someone working in that same seed industry. Also many companies will sell the same seeds, but there are of course many that sell different ones too. So many amazing varieties out there are in need of growing, that are worth trying and even adapting to your region. Really good subject and video. Liked it a lot.

Another great video Luke! I just finished my seed order yesterday and your method is the same method that I have been using for years. I complicate it a bit by adding distance (to support local companies where possible) to the equation. I build a huge sortable Excel sheet (1700 rows this year) with all the seeds and seed suppliers that I want on it and then I sort it and make my selections from there. It take the better part of two weeks to do it all, but I think I end up making better decisions. It's certainly nice to know, before the first dollar is spent, exactly how much the whole order will cost. Great tips!

I'm not sure if this will work, I've never done this before: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vmOH-amLLZLDbaSFP_Uu9PJcpkoUiqZnqEi0KbJdpa4/edit?usp=sharing That version is missing some conditional formatting that I used to colour-code the prices based on their value in a gradient from red to green (which Excel can do automatically), as well, this is only the top sheet from my seed order... once I'm finished with my order I delete the working sheet - the big one with all the options on it - in order to prevent myself from buying "just one more packet". I'm sorry I didn't keep it, although it's basically exactly the same as this sheet, only with more subsheets for vegetable families to make things more organized. There were many other providers on the list, but a preference was given for keeping the orders to a minimum, buying local/Canadian, etc. Sometimes it just comes down to a judgment call, the numbers can't always win. If I can find a better way to share the sheet I will. And I hope someone finds this helpful.

I just found your seed shop now, mention it in one of your more recent videos! Here in Canada, boy do we get ripped off on seeds. It's not uncommon for seed packets to go for $3.99 and up for 10, 25 seeds sometimes. Even with the currency exchange I'm going to save a bundle. Woe is me that I found it just as we're going into Winter!

My local feed store sells bulk seeds by the scoop, for less than the cost of mailing seeds. The rest I get online, from specialty seed raisers IN MY AREA, proven winners for my microclimate. All seeds are not equal, as is evidenced by germination rates, which in my experience have ranged from about 30% to 95%. Germination varies with processing, storage conditions, age, and cultivar. Also, some wholesalers sell off old seeds at a discount that comes out as cheap price but low germination rate. And if a company prints a catalog, I and other buyers pay for it. My best buys have come from recommendations from local fellow gardeners, and they are not always the cheapest seeds. I have had mixed luck on Ebay, with some good seed buys, but some bad cuttings which were not the flower color listed. Next I will try some of the free online seed exchanges. The price is right, but the selection is limited.

From what I have seen, yes you have the best prices. My one problem is, I am in zone 9 and you are more north. I have a hard time finding pepperoncini. Only one place had it. But I want to know if all your seeds will grow here. I am down by Galveston, Texas. The best tomato plants here are Celebrity, Surefire, Sunmaster, and Heatwave.

The price per seed is the biggest reason why I no longer purchase from certain companies who will remain nameless. A $1 seed package with 8 seeds in it is just not a good deal. Thank you Luke for being honest.

I bought n planted a bunch of different seeds from him and I planted tons so they would sprout and they ALL did and now there are way too many. Lol. And I still have lots left in the packages. This guy's a manace!

Hey Luke, Great info. brother. It seems that your knowledge is endless, lol. Seriously though, you always share a lot of great info. in all your videos & it's greatly appreciated. As of yesterday (1-5-15) I have 3 tomato plants sprouting (indoors of course)😃 I hope we all have a great 2015 gardening season. It's great relaxation & we get food which is a good thing, lol. I hope you & Sindy are doing well. Tell her I said HOLA!!! ~Pete~

I see Territorial in the thumbnail, I'm from Cottage Grove Oregon, they sold Brussels sprouts in June, I didnt know better, they did. I planted it and it bolted, wasted money. But they do have great seeds.

i buy all my seeds from you. great quality, nice packaging, and 100% germination rate. I'll be referring everyone to purchase only from you.I know you said you don't have nice packaging, but I disagree: it's simple, yet elegant, and because it's non coated paper, I can toss it into my worm farm for compost.

Well here in Florida if you buy seed at worthlessmart or homodepot you have to buy them in April and keep them until September. If you don't take steps to keep the bugs that are prevalent in Florida off your seeds then you end up with dead seeds. I try to order in bulk which makes them cheaper. Buy your seeds by weight not by the packet. Meaning buy a quarter ounce of seed even if you only need a gram. It will be cheaper.

Bakers Creek is off line because of too many orders. I went there and they are closed to the public because of covid. I was wondering if you can update this video since these are crazy times. I was at Lowe’s on January 2 they had their seeds out and people were buying seeds and soil mulch lumber. Just want to let you know I enjoy all your videos. I think I’m through half of them

I gladly pay extra $ to get seeds from reputable source. The only 2 places I get seeds from are rare seed co and kitazawa seed. Kitazawa seed is local for us so there's that incentive for me to support them.

Now that I've shopped at MIgardener... And other brand name places. For the same kinds of plants .. I make my lists from whatever catalogs are lying around. Then I price check. And then I check MIgardener for the same variety. If Luke has red Garnet Amaranth, even if it shows a lower price elsewhere I'm gonna bet that he's sending more seeds... Especially if they only list weight on the packet. I bought amaranth from 7 companies this year. 7 different varieties. Only Luke and Baker Creek even germinated... And his cost way less (99 cents vs 3.64) for quite a lot more seeds. Just for anyone coming late to this video...

You can literally buy seeds for 10% of the retail price right now like from Cal Ranch. A pound of red detroit beets are $1.50 instead of $15. That's a great deal. You go to Ace and its $2.5 for a scoop haha. Like stock up when they're on sale. I think mylar bags or something can help with storage.

You're prices also are cheaper than a lot of stores after looking at your website. I'll have to order some.

I have never gotten seed catalouges in my life. I wish I did. How does this happen? It doesn't matter when you are going to plant. You need to swim in youre pile of seeds like scrooge mcduck imagining all the possibillities. Its the same thing. The sooner the better. Gimme now.

price per seed might be same as some companies because the tomatoes are 25 per pack so 4 cents each approximately but shipping is reasonable. I have bought over the years packs for $3 to $4 with a lot more seeds but who needs a hundred tomato seeds of one variety?
@rickeshpatel40254 жыл бұрын
I got non gmo seeds from the dollar general, American seed looks ok about to find out if they are good. 25c per packet, less seeds which is great for my backyard garden. 😊

Hi Luke, I hope you and your lovely family had a wonderful Christmas (2018). I have been watching your channel for a while now and thank you for all the wonderful tips and tricks you have taught me. I am really going to be needing your help this next year as I am moving from North-Central Colorado (20 miles North of Denver) to Columbus, Ohio. I have just spent the last five years learning how to garden in a 5b zone, high altitude (5400 ft), unpredictable weather area and now find ourselves relocating again to Central Ohio. Don't get me wrong, I am getting excited about the move, my husband just got a wonderful job there, but the thought of having to learn all over again in a lower altitude (902 ft), not to mention that I am not sure of the growing zone yet. But I moved here to Colorado from a zone 9-10 out in the California desert where nothing grows unless you're a cactus or a Joshua tree... so I am doing my best to learn as much as I can. Our weather here in Colorado was so crazy this last season that by the time the ground was warm enough to get my garden going (June 10th) we were already looking at a very short season and it ended up being a very stormy season at that and we lost most of our crop to hail storms (as well as our roof), and then lost the last of our crop (all of my Tomatillos) to an early frost. Our Habaneros, and Jalapenos never even had a chance. Anyways, I did not mean to run on like this, I meant to just ask you for as much advice as you can send my way for gardening in Central Ohio. Happy New Year Luke, may it be a prosperous one for you and may you and your family be healthy, safe and happy throughout the coming year.

There is a cooperative seed company in Maine that sells many seed varieties that Luke may not carry or if he's out of stock. It's called FEDCO seeds. Look them up online. Minimal packaging, high integrity, reliable results. Check them out if you haven't already.

This is why I love MIgardener seeds. I just wish you sold some plants. For example strawberries and blueberries. For these plants I just shopped around online for the best prices. If I shopped in the stores it would of cost me what I call hiddden fees or fuel to get to the stores.

I actually just got my seeds that I bought from your site yesterday, they look great! I did cut open the Red Giant Mustard while opening the package tho, so I lost most of that seed. But no biggie, the six varieties of seeds I bought look great and I can't wait to get some soil so I can plant them. I live in zone 10, so I can basically plant all year round from what I've seen online, just need some good soil to do it. Thanks!
@MIgardener10 жыл бұрын
Shake the package onto a paper plate or over the garden :) the seed has to be somewhere! if it ended up on the ground, simply vacuum up the seed, and empty the vacuum waste into the garden. Nothing is ever "lost".
@bbroomm10 жыл бұрын
***** Oh, I'm not worried about it. There was plenty of seed left for me to plant. It kind of went all over the counter and the floor so I thought it "contaminated" and saved what I could and sacrificed the rest =) But your packages are so generous with the seed. I only have a patio garden, so I would not have used all of it anyway. I'm more concerned about a good soil for my zone and space. I watched your video with the comforter bag and I just so happen to have one...so thanks again!
@MIgardener10 жыл бұрын
bbroomm OH yeaaaah! I am so excited that you are using the comforter bag idea! That thing produced and produced! It was free, and one of the best little pick me ups to go out and harvest some lettuce every day.
