This video was fantastic because now I know how to replace the bearings on my 10er which I believe is what happens to be causing me problems with my wood turning, at least I hope that's what is causing it. My drive shaft has a slight wobble in it when turning on the lathe. But when I crank it up to high speed with a decent sized chunk of wood mounted it causes the whole machine to wobble and shake so severely that the whole machine will literally Start to walk away from me across my patio.🤦🏼♂️🥴 But anyway I believe its the bearings that are causing this to happen. If I am wrong about this and you might think it's likely something else that would be causing this problem for me I would greatly appreciate your input/advice, TIA. And also thanks again for posting this video as it made things alot easier for me to understand the process of changing the bearings. Also, does the silicone work well for the way tubes? I have been using a type of grease similar to lithium which the saw dust tends to stick to causing the headstock and carriage to stick really bad and its really difficult to slide them. Is that an issue with the silicone spray as well? Sorry for the long ass comment and all the questions. Happy woodworking my good sir 🤙🏻

Im glad to help. The good news is that there arent many other things that would cause that. I have read that the splined shaft can get sloppy over decades of use although they are tight on both of my 10ERs, and make sure the drive spur and live cup center are aligned properly. I am not a lathe expert but I was taught that the larger the piece (wood or metal) the lower the speed, but as I said, I am no expert. Most guys seem to use johnsons paste wax for all sliding surfaces, seems to be a common and generally accepted practice, I used silicone spray because its what I had and for me it works well enough, I would avoid any manner of grease for the reasons you described.

Excellent. Thank you. Where did you get replacement bearings? I can’t seem to find the right ones?

I bought mine on eBay from guy who is very proud of selling Japanese bearings instead of Chinese bearings. These are very similar but not exactly the same. the difference is the tolerance. Apparently the originals were C1 bearings (very tight tolerance). The bearings available today, that are readily available, are C3 (slightly looser, in fractions of a thousandth). I tried to find C1 bearings and it became obvious that if they were available at all it must be a state secret and would likely be a couple of hundred bucks each. Here is a link to a forum page that discusses these bearings, forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=20426 Good luck and thank you for watching!

@@tobroken1965 thanks much. I just bought a 10er and it is super dirty and the bearings are probably original. Mostly cleaning and it’ll be like new but the bearings need to be replaced. Thanks again.
