So glad you went into your disclaimer the way you did. When I order from Amazon I see all kinds of reviews where they give it 1 star because “how could someone write something like this, absolutely disgusting, gore p*rn” blah blah like yeah sweetie that is what you sign up for when you read it. But I hate that they give it one star when they chose to go in. I think it might put people off it if they base their reviews on what they choose, which sucks for these authors!

Exactly. I was telling my husband yesterday, I don't pick up, like, Western novels and rate them 1 star bc I don't like Westerns lol. I don't understand why pple rate things the way they do sometimes.

I am currently reading "The Woom" and its excellent writing, so far I like it. "Gone to see the River Man" is one of the best shorter horror books I have read recently. It is SOOOOO good

I love how you separated out subgenres!!! I definitely am not super into extreme horror, but love like speculative, gothic and idk, like, regular horror? I definitely want to try Eric Larocca so i preordered that bind-up that is coming out in September ❤️

Nice recs, The Summer I died and Survivor are classics of the genre like The Girl next door, Urban Gothic and Header. Woom and Kin are very good also The Troop was excellent.

I was reading we need to do something after a sleepless night while waiting for a friend in a cafe. I was so tired and sleepy so at some point I thought that I’m going crazy just like the characters in the book. Weird experience but I loved it

Surprised you enjoyed reading the slob after prior comments made about male writing female characters in other similar, and even sometimes tamer books? Did you enjoy the writing on female characters like Vera in The Slob? Anything problematic, or just the ending?

I agree with being irked by people who rate books badly for doing what it's supposed to do! If you don't like it then that's fine. I just read 'For the sake of" and disliked it, personally. I gave it 2 stars. But certainly not because of the extreme aspects of it! I appreciate those a lot and it would have been rated higher because of those aspects if I didnt dislike other parts of it! On the same note I have literally seen someone give a witch series 1 star because "It was too witchy" lol.

I think so but extreme horror is more of an umbrella term for more subgenres

Here's my issue with trans authors : I already know too much about the author. Just write a good story. If the story is well written and spooky enough then I'll read it. I'll like it. Why do I need to know if the author is trans or a POC or a woman or anything else? The point of horror is the horror. I saw the new Jordan Peele on audible and I was tempted to check it out, but the summary as well as reviews were just all about how politically necessary a book of its type is. Why? Why do I need to care about representation or politics when I pick up a horror book? If the book inspires me to think about those things that's great but I would prefer if the major selling point were how good the horror is. How bleak, scary, creepy etc. That's why I'm reading horror. Social justice issues are part of our lives and so can absolutely be included in a good horror story but am I ultimately reading the book to be preached at or am I reading it to feel scared?

imo truly well done horror speaks to the real horrors of our world (racism, misogyny, homophobia & transphobia) through more speculative/ unrealistic horror elements. that’s my taste so that’s what i like to recommend! i’m also just going to mention that it’s a very privileged position to not have to care about representation in literature, but just because that representation doesn’t matter to you doesn’t mean that reviewers/ blurbs shouldn’t mention it. no one is asking you to consider it or to care when we mention it. however…. you feeling this defensive says a lot…. hope you have a good day! be kind 🫶🏼

Thank you so much for covering For the Sake Of! I'm happy to be among a great resurgence of extreme fale authors! Definitely look up Rayne Havok, Regina Watts, and Paula D. Ashe for other women writing some NASTY stuff! And For the Sake Of 3 is in the works, and it's already looking to be even more disgusting than the first two!

Haven’t read it but Poppy z. Bright is an lgbt+ author. You may wish to review them? I loved COWS because I liked the set up at the end. The beginning was so revolting. First books that made me grit my teeth and pull back - "oh hell noo, no,no nooooooo" Unfortunately the bit with the girlfriend was predictable because of the genera. I was expecting it.

Grat vid. I agree on a lot of those. Gotta strongly disagree on Night of the Mannequins, though. I like Stephen Graham Jones' writing, but I've seldom hated a book more than this one. Just hated the stinknin' damn guts out of it. There was no logic, even to the main character's insanity, and the ideas were just so stupid they were insulting - kaiju-sized mannequins & the motivation to murder people... it was just junk from the get-go. Just an awful, awful book. Jones always has a dumb idea or two (I liked The Only Good Indians, but the monster playing one-on-one basketball was just idiotic) but they seemed to all be dumped together in this book. I'm going to have to be careful just buying everything he writes from now on, because if he has books like Night of the Mannequins in him, I don't want to be wasting my money.
