I think you are making a mistake by talking about long "i" or short "i". They are two different sounds. One is lax and the other is tense. You can go to the Sounds American channel and they will show you that talking about duration is a mistake.

These are established naming conventions and how we are taught phonics as kids. “Short” vowels are seen in simple 3 letter words like “cat” and “long” vowels are seen in simple four letter words like “cape.” The thing about a vowel and what makes it a vowel is the fact that you can make it as long or as short as you want really. So no I don’t agree that talking about the sounds in this way is a mistake.
