This was a great video - especially showing the extent you pieced for the unicorn! I have found a few times I had to piece some fabric to make a block - but really, what is a quilt but a lot of pieces sewn together. It is actually very satisfying to make do. About #getyourquiltywishesgranted last year was the first year I participated. I didn't post a wish, but I responded to a few. One was a person asking for orphan blocks to sew on clothing. I sent her a few blocks and she was very happy. I saw another woman posted for epp supplies. I had some in a shape I had accidentally ordered and didn't realize it until it was too late to return. She offered to pay postage or send me some fabric. I told her if she had some leftover precuts I could use them. She sent me enough that I was able to make a quilt out of them. It was fun making connections with other quilters that could use items I had.

The glue piecing guess game was *chef's kiss*! It can be quite satisfying to see a "perfect" project at the end of your hard work, but if you didn't enjoy the process or were stressed over finding the exact 3 or 4th block, that feeling lingers in the final result. There's relief that its over, not joy that it is complete. Good enough is always perfect. 💖

I think color theory takes a lot of practice. It's a developed skill, like cutting & exact piecing. IMO ❤ Even when I am satisfied with my choices, I will do "retakes" until I'm fully committed. Of you can get your hands on a color wheel, that will help. I use mine all the time!

Don't stress about it. Just use what you or the person that you are making the quilt for likes and it will turn out great! Just this morning my daughter texted me and spontaneously thanked me for her wedding quilt and told me how much she loves it. She chose a large number of very disparate fabrics that were out of my comfort zone but I made it work and she is thrilled. Mission accomplished!! We are the queen (or king) of the quilt, so go out there and have fun! 😊

SO helpful! I was disappointed you did not cover the scenario you picture at 0:10.....a fat eight that is just shy of 9 inches. I bought two fat eight bundles online for a quilt and several of the pieces more like 8.5" so I could not use those fabrics as not enough to do piecing. And it just felt wrong to have to go buy more when I had already spent good money and just got slighted via poor cutting by the vendor. I love my local quilt shop as when you buy yardage from them they include an extra inch or two and that extra wiggle room prevents heartache!

Make sure you are ACTUALLY out of fabric. As I was cutting the fabric for a quilt, I discovered I was going to run short on one of the pieces. I panicked, searched the internet and everything. I found a quilt shop that had it, but shipping costs were going to run me a lot! So I re-read the pattern, trying to see if there was a way to fudge anything. Turned out not every pieced block was going to be used in the pattern! I had enough; I just didn't make the number of blocks called for 🙄

Thanks for the tips. I have used a similar technique to paste together scraps to recreate a piece of fabric that is missing bits. Sometimes I take the leftover fussy cutting scraps and sew them back up together and create a different design. I can't afford to waste anything so I find ways that I don't have to. I am collecting fabrics to make my own Alentejana quilt and will take inspiration from you and use also some leftovers I have. I see it will be much more difficult to decipher the pattern if each part is not made up exclusively of the same fabric but I like a challenge so am looking forward to it. BTW, in Portuguese you pronounce the "j" , in two different ways. In "Alentejana" it is a hard "j" like in "John". It's actually pronounced without the e in the middle: alent+jana. Sorry, it just sounds so weird to hear a very Portuguese word pronounced in Spanish. 😊

Of course, the easiest way to deal with it is just use something else. 99 times out of 100, no one else will see it, and you probably won't notice, either, after the first annoyance of the substitution. And/or intentionally use multiple similar fabrics to fill a need, and then there really isn't any 'running out.'

I honestly think the quilt is more interesting and has more of a story and character when there are surprising aspects or pieced elements that came about by “making do”. Whatever quilt you make with those unicorns will be all the more fascinating because two of the unicorns are pieced (if you look closely enough!!!).

I did that, once, many years ago. I had purchased some small quilt panels and it was the end of the bolt, which was cut very crooked, on the diagonal. Of course, they did not charge me for that crooked part. But I was able to piece a whole other block together from that damaged area; it matched perfectly, and I was so proud of myself! It was my favorite one and I kept it! I imagined pioneer women doing something similar, and it was a great feeling making something so beautiful, out of nothing! These are some great ideas, Karen, and I never thought of most of them! TFS. 🌷

This is a great video for helping sort problems, however, here is a warning! I didn't have enough background fabric for my quilt, so went on an online hunt for it. Success - except I needed to import it from Canada to the UK. Problem solved, or so I thought, as our daughter who lives near Montreal was due to visit. When said fabric was produced from her suitcase, it was a visibly different dye lot ....... 🙀

I ran out of a piece & absolutely had to have the same fabric. So I took a pic & did a Google search & found some. I was trying to avoid a seam also but when I got it, I cut it wrong & had a seam anyway. Oh well the top is finished, now I have to finish the quilt.

I've done ALL of these! I have a bad habit of collecting UFOs and then finding out that one of the fabrics I need is no longer available. I have become quite adept at searching local stores and online for that one stupid OOP fabric. I also am working on a quilt for a friend that uses large templates to cut the pieces. One of the templates is used very frequently, but needs to be taped together from a couple of sheets of paper. Well, didn't I just tape it together on the wrong line, and cut a couple of dozen of them too small? I was cutting templates out of 5-strip strip sets and I didn't have enough fabric or will to remake all those strip sets, so... I ended up taking the scraps from the strip sets, finding a size that worked as an insert, and adding that insert into the middle of each template (they were angled on the ends, so inserting into the middle was easier. It took a couple of evenings but I figured once it was assembled and quilted you'd never see it.

I'm the kind of quilter that always has enough. when I'm short of a piece, I take another fabric. Patchwork should be fun to make and to look at later

Quilt kits are so stressful for this reason. I have one that gives you the exact yardage, no room to even straighten the first cut. This video helps me move it up in the to-make rankings

That must be stressful. I find the yardage way too much…and you are paying for every square inch.

Thank you for the tips on how to splice fabric. I never would have thought to use glue. Genius. I will also be looking into the quilty wish group. Clever. ❤

One time the longarmer called me in a panic, something had happened to a little piece of my quilt top and she needed to replace a square. Asked if I had any, but I was away on vaca, she checked with a friend and found some right away. Crisis averted, which was great cuz that one was a very special wedding gift quilt. Just illustrating another reason you might need a piece of fabric from your quilt.

Hi Karen, Thanks for all these great tips ! I'm working on M&E100days. I can get about 5 blocks form a FQ. Thats great but not for the longer diagonal rows. So I'll see what the other fabrics in the collection(Tilda Pie in the sky) fit in whith the row. A bit of shuffling might be needed but it will look great in the end !

The quilty wishes hashtag even 'runs' late October/early November. It is a pay it forward game; so you go through the # and grant the wishes you can and post what you are looking for, and your location by county/state. What you're looking for can be general or specific. If you like scrap quilting, everyone is happy to pass along scraps. Want to make a hexi quilt with no repeat fabric, cool. You could ask for a specific color, or motif (like Halloween) but don't care about a specific fabric. You can also get more specific, like asking for a specific fabric. Definitely post a pic of the fabric. Likely hood of getting it is ruffly tied to how popular it is; everyone wants Tula and Gastly. But by and large ppl are trying to help.
