Released in 1977, the Alpha was one of many variants of the iconic Polaroid SX-70, incorporating cheaper materials, small technical improvements, and new styling to make the camera more affordable, reliable, and stylish.

I think it’s also important to note that cost cutting wasn’t the only factor driving Polaroid to make their awful SX-70 Model 3. The factory making fresnel lenses used in the SLR mechanism made a whole batch that was faulty. These lenses were very, very expensive to make. In order to salvage what they could, Polaroid engineered a whole new viewfinder and made another production line just so that they had somewhere to put the faulty fresnel lenses (the model 3 didn’t need them because they weren’t SLR). It really shows just how dang expensive those lenses were that they bothered to make a whole new camera line just to make up the cost of the ruined lenses.

My grandmother had some version of the SX-70 that included an integral ultrasonic rangefinder. I was fascinated with that camera.

I still have (somewhere) my original chrome version, with ultrasonic focusing. The other one I have, (just dug it out), is an all black one, also with ultrasonic focusing. This one shows version 2. I believe that I saved it at some point when it was on the way to trash, after my employer got their first digital camera. I also found two flash sticks. I recall at one point buying an ITT electronic flash for my chrome beauty, but found that it was not quite matching the light output of the flash sticks.

Why brother and I were talking about this camera this morning. He bought one when he first started working in high school. I had the Kodak one that had to be returned after the patent lawsuit. It’s amazing to think is wasn’t that long ago we were still using film. I remember on my honeymoon in 2000 being edgy with black and white film for our photos. Now I am looking at my photo library and it says 44,139 photos, 2376 videos. Times change

In 1975, my father bought a model 2 to upgrade from the Polaroid Swinger that his father gave him to take vacation photos. I now have both of those cameras and will pass them on to my kids.

As a fan of both you and the SX-70, I'd enjoy every short video on any camera like that you find. Love the blue button.

An infuriating feature of the ultrasonic rangefinder was that it did not allow you to photograph anything through a window.

I watch a lot of this type of video, and quite frankly I really think your videos are really well done, your cadence reminds me of an informational video, all business, clear, concise and obviously well rehearsed. I’m actually a little jealous I dint rehearse

your other videos inspired me to test the sx-70 sonar i got at a thrift store, has a couple minor issues but still works and gives me that old school picture look i want for taking images of old buildings in my area. i still need to get the ND filter to bring the exposure down for the 600 film, but i got some good pictures on the darkest setting and the slightly over exposed picture give them a look that they are 40 years old and fading lol

Polaroid also had a white plastic SX-70 with imitation shark skin appliques in black. I was forever switching the different appliques on my chrome model SX-70 for different looks. But invariably I would always go back to the genuine leather, it looked the best.

I guess stubborn CEOs with odd ideas about product design and useability, with an unwillingness to take good advice are not a recent phenomenon. Although to his credit, Land was actually a visionary and genius innovator with a wealth of useful qualities beyond "rich", so the comparison is a little unfair.

The fake leather is called Porvair, and the degradation happens with all SX-70s that do not have a metal finish. The ones with metal finish was always real leather. It’s easy enough to replace and you can find replacements online.

I somewhat hope not, but will thank you for what this channel reminds me of. This channel is like the early days of that other channel, where it was informative and professional, yet entertaining, with just enough tangents to make it all work great. Last time I watched a TC video, he came off as, I'm not exactly sure the correct word here, but preachy, in a way, while getting side tracked on other unrelated topics to the main topic. I mean TC works, as it gets views and is growing I'm sure, but I like the format here much better.
