Introduced in 1943, the Kit, Emergency, Personnel Mk.1A allowed airmen to carry essential survival gear on their person in case they were unable to access separately-stored gear before bailing out or ditching. This remarkably well-preserved example once belonged to Flying Officer George Cohoe (1912-1973), who flew antisubmarine patrols off Canada's west coast during the Second World War.

An R.C.A.F. brat, I remember playing briefly with the heliograph. Simple but effective bit of kit, literally that pop brought back after 33 missions in Halifax III B "Clueless" in which as a mid-upper gunner he had the communication control on the front of his oxygen mask shot off by an overzealous German. Goes to show you location is everything. If he'd leaned a little further I wouldn't be here writing about it. Gilles, thanks as always. Your material is endlessly fascinating and you are one of a very very few You Tubers that gets an instant click when I see something new regardless of whatever else I might be caught up in. There's always time for Gilles!

I wonder why the knife had a marlin-spike? arnt they used for rope splicing? sure, worth the effort for serious rope lines and rigging, but I'd have thought in a survival situation a knot would suffice in most cases. surely there must have been more useful things to put in a survival kit knife. does anyone know the logic there?

@@V3RTIGO222 That's fine and wasn't the argument. But VPNs already got into legal trouble for claims like "protects your data". Just be honest about the product that you're pushing, and if you can't, find a better sponsor that doesn't require you to lie about them.
@V3RTIGO222
@V3RTIGO222 3 ай бұрын
@@graealex I mean... it helps avoid online tracking/logging by your ISP, so it reduces the data recorded by them. Using a sufficiently secure VPN can re-route IP traces long enough for you to leave or disconnect from a service that legitimately wants your actual IP address. It doesn't "protect" you from everything, and doesn't necessarily gurantee the safety of the data it can actually help "protect" or rather always prevent it being collected. You can use onion routing if you want to seriously be anonymous online, and products like nord actually do allow for that.
@graealex

@@V3RTIGO222 This has all been debunked. It might help you circumvent some geo blocking, and that's about it. Maybe help against legal repercussions when you Torrent. But that's not what gets presented here.

@@graealex I honestly have no idea if you read my comment entirely or not, but I clearly explained that in it. How much do you actually know about data security? I'm legitimately curious if you are in that field or watched an abridged explanation that "debunks" VPNs.

Don't forget the UK monitors your Internet at the first connection. In other words at the fibre or copper cable leaving your home. So they have access to what ever leaves your home and obviously they know your address. There is no right to privacy regarding electronic communication here.

Sounds more like China, doesn't it? They've also granted themselves, via Parliament, permission to install a back door in basically whatever they want; your ISP; your phone etc. without saying a word about it to anyone. The UK is turning into one of the most surveilled countries on the planet which is why my VPN never goes into any of the countries of the UK. They're _all_ permanently written off as untrustworthy. Sorry Wales, Ireland, Scotland...you lie down with dogs, as the saying goes. I absolutely would not do business with them nor order *anything* from anyplace in the UK on the Internet. The UK is now an electronic no-go zone in any and all ways. Did you know there's over 1,000 government and private surveillance cameras per square mile in central London? That's an old stat, there's probably more now. Britain used to be "the lads" but now...? Those days are gone.

Honestly I'm much more impressed by the Luftwaffe Rescue Buoys. They're a floating, habitable container, full of supplies, and emergency equipment for downed Luftwaffe pilots running into trouble after...bombing England. 😮 Somewhat controversial, but they were well designed, brilliantly simple, and it was impressive that the Nazi high command thought well enough of their pilots to have the political will to deploy them by the dozens in the English Channel. Hate to admit it, but they were far more effective and on point for that particular period in WW2 when they were deployed, than a mere general issue survival vest.🫡

The Brits _did_ actually have them as well, although I think they may have come late in the war and that they didn't really go 'all in' on them... but I'm half - guessing. Not my area. I'm nearly certain Gilles did a video on the German version. I'm somewhat less certain but I think he may have done a follow up on the British ones? Possibly I'm mixing him up in this instance with another creator... Simon Whistler, perhaps - it's usually at least an even bet that he's covered any given topic! Anyway, good hunting, I'll leave you to it..!🧐😀

I don't think that "the Nazi high command thought well enough of their pilots". Like today, it takes a lot of time and money to train pilots, so they are some of the few people that the military, still to this day, goes the extra mile to recover.
