around 1:54:30 we are talking about the Minotaur mythology and, looking it up now, I get a little misremembered. I say that I think one of the gods became a bull and tricked King Minos' wife (Pasiphaë) into copulating with him. It was close but not quite. Minos asked Poseidon to send him a Bull to sacrifice but then chose to keep the bull instead. So Poseidon made Pasiphaë fall in love/lust with the bull as punishment (because why punish the guy responisble for the slight when you can punish his innocent wife? Typical Greek gods). She then 'willingly' copulated with the bull (with the help of a fake cow suit) and bore the minotaur.
@LarthV2 ай бұрын
Just my stupid take: The punishment was indeed for Minos, not his wife. It was that his wife cheated on him with his sacrifice, thus undermining his masculinity. Bestiality however was totally o.k. for everybody involved, just that Pasiphaë had a new kink afterwards...

Also, we then eventually move onto mercury poisoning and I wrongly state that mercury stays in the body forever and eventually may require a process to get rid of it medically (Chelation is the word I was looking for). Looking it up now, no, mercury doesn't stay in the body forever, just a really long time, so build up can be an issue.

Watching you two discuss ADHD is so relatable. Rob, you may feel like you haven't achieved much in your life, but I'm so impressed by how much you have accomplished so far! I just got diagnosed in 2023 in my 30s and I'm just starting to get things done. Prior to my diagnosis just working 40 hours a week took every bit of energy I had. Now I'm in school trying to get a degree for the first time, I'm working 60 hours a week, and I'm actually starting to accomplish things I wanted to. It's not easy, but on days when I struggle instead of depression and self hatred my mindset has shifted into grace and knowledge of why I am the way I am and the knowledge that I literally can't be 100% every day. Fighting it only makes it worse, so sometimes I do just need to take a break and let my brain do the ADHD things so I can get back at it the next day.

Brit I especially love how open you are about ADHD, and seeing Rob talk about it as well was exactly the same way I was feeling before a diagnosis. ADHD & Me resonated so much that I requested my friends to watch the show to understand what I go through! This helped me out a lot in terms of stabilizing my mood and reduced my anxiety. I can only wish you all the best during your starting phase ‘Retard’ in this case by the way just means it is a delayed activation over a longer period, rather than the relatively short span of regular ritalin. Britt around 1:0:28 completely verbalized my frustration a few days back. I was diagnosed in the late 90’s when I was in my late 20’s and it is still a constant struggle when I have things around the house I have strong internal motivation to get done but I become paralyzed and just wind up reading or playing video games while berating myself all day long. I find setting a timer in 45 minute intervales throughout the day helps. I do what I want in 45 minutes and for 15 minutes I work on the thing that is bugging me. I use the stove timer so I *have* to get up to turn it off. But the other day, I did this until 5:30-ish and all I did all day was read. I have to clarify I have a lot of unstructured time as an empty-nester with no job.

I studied biology, chemistry, and classics among other things en route to medical school, so there was a lot in this video on which I want to comment, but it looks like others are already covering all that. So here's your blood type/donor summary: The red cell/plasma divide is because the antigens (the proteins that can stimulate an immune response) are on the cell, but the antiBODIES (which attack foreign antigens) are in the plasma. So someone with O negative blood who has been exposed to any other blood type will develop antibodies to that donor type. I.e., they will have anti-A, B, and Rh+ in their plasma. If you give that plasma to someone with A, B, or Rh+ cells, the antibodies will attack. Conversely, someone who is AB+ has red cells will ALL of the common antigens which will stimulate an immune reaction in everyone else, but they don't develop antibodies to proteins that they have naturally. Therefore, their plasma is antibody-free. It's a little more complicated than that, but that's the basic gist. The true universal donor is O negative LOW TITER, meaning O negative with little/no antibodies in the plasma. They are the best donors for whole blood in trauma, but they are rare enough that their blood is usually reserved for pregnant women and infants. O positive will usually be safe enough for others in an emergency and is more abundant. Obviously, the best is when the patient's blood and the donor unit are actually crossmatched, but this takes time and is not feasible in a many emergencies.
@RobertHartleyGM2 ай бұрын
Thank you for that! And the other question was, if in an emergency situation where someone desperately needs blood but you're not a match, is it better to give the transfusion to try keep them alive long enough to get proper help, or is it worse? I imagine I, being A- would be able to receive A+ blood in an emergency situation, but not B+ blood, for instance?
@BigArmBoss2 ай бұрын
@@RobertHartleyGM Short version: you can give a DIFFERENT blood type, but not an INCOMPATIBLE blood type without risking serious injury such as organ failure or death. The antibody reaction will destroy your own blood cells, so you're not even winning on that front! As A-, you can receive A- and O- red cells. If you were wheeled unconscious into a trauma bay, being a man, you would likely get O+, which isn't ideal but is weighing risk of transfusion reaction vs supply limitations. If you previously developed antibodies via prior transfusions, this could still be an issue. Best: Typed and Crossmatched - least risk of harm, most efficient use of a limited resource Better: Type-specific emergency release - we know the patient's blood type, but haven't had the chance to test specific units of blood for antibody reactions (there are tests beyond ABO/Rh). So you'd get Type A-, maybe Type A+ in a really dire emergency if you've never been transfused before. Good: Emergency release Type O. We don't know the patient's blood type, so we give the one that is unlikely to cause a transfusion reaction. Not ideal because it both hasn't been crossmatched and also is using an even more limited resource. This will occur in the trauma bay until the results of the initial labs come back with the patient's blood type. VERY BAD: Incompatible blood transfusion It's standard for hospital blood banks to have protocols for Emergency Release. The short version is that if the patient's type is unknown, the released units will be type O, with the rarer negative and low titer reserved for higher risk populations, even though the ideal would be for O- to be readily available for everyone. The Rh mismatch is not usually a big deal the first time; the risk of hemolysis goes up for Rh- people who have been exposed to Rh+ in the past, either through previous transfusion or pregnancy. (Rh- mothers now routinely receive prophylaxis for Rh+ babies they carry via a drug called Rhogam.) EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT A UNIVERSAL DONOR, GIVING BLOOD IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! Outside of trauma bays and similar scenarios, we use typed and crossmatched blood for transfusion. Every Type A, B, or AB whose blood is used for combatible patients is not only saving those lives, but preserving the type O for the situations where it is absolutely necessary. Also, giving blood does not results in a single unit. Except for when whole blood is used (typically in trauma), donated blood is broken down into components, so your donation results in multiple units of Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBCs), Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), Platelets, and Cryoprecipitate (lots of coagulation factors that help control bleeding). Finally, if you're out in the field and your buddy gets a nasty injury, your concern should be stopping the bleeding via pressure or tourniquet and getting evacuated to a higher level of care. Doing something simple like elevating legs to divert blood toward the heart and brain (unless it's a head bleed) will be a better intervention than an ad hoc buddy transfusion.

This might be where over diagnosing questions come up. Children's minds and adults are different. If those behaviors continue into adulthood, getting screened/diagnosed makes sense, but some behaviors for children's minds are universal. How many adults that can focus and task load/prioritize had drifty easily distractable minds as children?
@JHN12x12Ай бұрын
@@myphone7069 respectfully: 1) symptoms of ADHD are not about a difference in kind, but of degree; not whether it happens, but how much - for both children AND adults. 2) the root issue of the poorly-named ADHD is not attention or distractibility, but executive function (of which, attention and distractibility are some of the relevant obstacles). 3) if anything, ADHD is underdiagnosed as a whole, not overdiagnosed, and many people who need meds have to go through ridiculous hoops and obstacles for necessary treatment for an executive dysfunction disorder. shameful.

The Medusa being a normal woman cursed to be a Gorgon is a very late tale (as Greco-Roman mythology goes) from the Roman poet Ovid. There are some vases showing her as a beautiful woman from earlier than that, no description of why, or how she was transformed into a Gorgon exists in Greek sources. In Greek mythological stories that we still have, Medusa and her symptoms are simply monsters. Poseidon in Greek Mythology can be temperamental, but is one of the least troublesome gods and actually is helpful more often than not, which is a pretty good analogy for the sea/ocean being unpredictable and potentially dangerous, but the sea was also hugely important for Greek life and commerce, etc.

I didnt realize the girls campaign is also nearly at the end! That is a sad time indeed. Been watch it since day one and the girls did really fantastic. The guys campain is what spiraled my obsession with the game again. Itll be sad, but I look forward to what you guys do next ❤❤ That said- that mermaid game you described around the 50:00 mark is so incredibly batshit. Who comes up with these things 🤣🤣

Great chat, Rob and Britt! Loved it! Btw. I'm not fully sure you were saying it correctly with the disappearance of stars. Not an expert, just what I read. Yes, the space between stuff is expanding, but that mostly applies to galaxies. In our own galaxy, stuff holds "together" because of gravity. Distant galaxies don't affect us, or rather, we can't speak about "local" gravity field regarding distant galaxies so those are getting away from each other. What will happen is that the stars in our galaxy will die out (unless new stars are born). Of course we can see the stars in the distant galaxies (maybe not with a naked eye), but most of the stars we see are just from our own galaxy. Every time I think about space I age a little 😀

Sad to learn Misfits is concluding soon. I thought they were just getting started and would intersect with the guys in the future. I hope there will be more DnD.

How long do you suppose they've actually been filming this though. Might still be plenty to come.
@High-Tech-Geek2 ай бұрын
@@jasonhuckeby5784my understanding is they film a 3-4 hour session and break it into 6-8 30 minute episodes. Then sometimes don't film again for months. I don't think they get too much farther ahead than that. So, best case, maybe 8 episodes max in the can? But I honestly don't know. N this chat, they mentioned the misfits on a ship and I noticed at the end of the last episode, Ellie's promo spot had a ship on the table and the misfits minis were on Rob's screen... So I'd guess the end is nigh. 😢

I'm sure every nation has a soap opera like that, and only the natives understand it. In My home country, which is quite literally on the opposite side of the the planet from yours, Finland, the name of the show is Salatut Elämät (meaning "the secret lifes"). I'm also a huge fan of The Bold and the Beautiful. And of course of you guys.

2:09:24 Technically Moore's law refers to the number of transitors on a silcon chip. Not the amound of space for storage devices. Still was not a concept i was expecting Rob to quote let alone come up on this episode. And the concept of the law has been applied to technology as a whole although even for silcon chips is no longer accurate. Moore’s law, prediction made by American engineer Gordon Moore in 1965 that the number of transistors per silicon chip doubles every year. Later revised to every 2 years but held true to every 18 months or so for a long time.

Anecdote to your anecdote: In Canada a northern native settlements were tested for heavy metal poisoning after the fish they ate were found to have high levels of mercury and lead. To their surprise, the subjects were found to have lower than normal levels of heavy metals. After some study they discovered that the black tea, of which the natives drank a lot, contained GSH and other compounds that bind to heavy metal particles and allow them to flushed from their bodies.

An RP thing I found helpful as someone comfortable with RPing but not comfortable with acting, including changing voices and postures, is never using the term "I" when speaking in character. I create the differentiation by treating my character as though I am narrating their story. It helps me when stepping out of my comfort zone in terms of what the character can do, and it helps others know when it's something I'm saying or something the character is saying, and that saves us a bunch of comedy retracts.

Yeah, a lot of older mythology is really, really dark. For this reason, I do really like the depiction of the Greek Gods in the new series "Kaos". They are petty, vain, and give literally a f*ck about (human or any other) lives - which is precisely as the myths tells us they were. Now, to be fair, having your gods be all powerful but really messed up makes the fact that bad things happen in the world a lot easier theologically: "Why did that island explode and kill a ton of innocent people?" - "Because a god felt like fireworks today, I guess? Not really sure. Just try sacrificing more and hope for the best on our island."
