This channel will be huge soon. I have been working in finance in a few universities and this channel is legit top tier information. The problem is a lot of people fancy the type of clowns you can see online talking about "5 stocks to buy in March" or the "dividend gurus" buying JNJ, Mcdonals, walmart at stupid pe ratios etc.. but they never actually show the net gain of their portfolio. They just show you how much money they add in to the portfolio..

@@javiervazquez9591 I really like this old school journalist approach of story telling, the fact that its a bit monotone/serious makes it better. In commodity futures you can sell as easily as you can buy. There is no need to "borrow" ... the open interest simply expands. I learned under those conditions. When I have been asked by people about short sellers being evil or unpatriotic, I reply, " No, they are actually being very patriotic, they believe the US dollar will appreciate relative to the stock." ....has left many people scratching their head.

I dunno if I can agree with your final statements. Short sellers like Melvin capital who are now under litigation and found to have been colluding in the background with the clearing houses to prevent retail from buying more of Gme,amc,nok AMD bb is beyond just betting the company fundamentally is worth less than their initial position. Using social media to form hit pieces on companies is one thing and maybe fall under the free market idea however finding ways round regulation in order to sell a company short more than it’s available float without even having to own the shares increases the selling pressure and pushes a stock down and is technically illegal. So yeah maybe not all short sellers are bad and they do add to the efficiency in the market however the retail community’s gripe with short sellers is specifically with the ones that have seemingly broken the law, exploited loop holes and directly prey on the uneducated emotional retail trader (ape) with their tactics. Then on top of that don’t even get me started on their PFOF agreements they have with these zero fee brokers. Was certainly nice to see a video on the light side of short selling and was obviously your goal to show the opposite of what everyone is saying which for right in with your overall message. Just hard to agree with knowing now what we’ve found out over the last few weeks especially in regard to the documents that have been posted from the litigation with apex. Enjoyed the video a lot. New subscriber. Thank you 😊

What happened was 1. They borrowed stocks; 2. They sold the stocks to someone else; 3: That someone else has lent the stocks to Person D; 4. Person D sells them Now, the same share has been shorted twice, and it's completely legal and fair.

I think this was a well articulated video. However, what isn't discussed is while shorts a retail investors both have a role to play in a free market, the regulators either not doing their jobs and looking the other way during fraudulent activity is what makes the system unstable. This is a key point that must be discussed. As you've said, the problem isn't shorts taking their position, nor retail investors rallying behind a stock they believe in. The real issue is the regulators (mostly coming from previous jobs on Wall Street) stepping in and either stopping the unlimited losses that come with short selling or turning the blind eye when fraud is apparent.

I really enjoyed watching this documentary. Please make more of them. Perhaps on trying to find out / predict what could be the next big GME and what would be the big picture if this trend of shorting vs. longing intensifies. How can we track the bets against companies (shorting) to try and take the opposite bet? Also, if you could uncover the whole idea of dark pool trading and how that may amount to manipulating stock prices by HFs who are already in short positions against those companies that they pool trade.

You can just Google short interest to find that out. If you want to know if more people are long that usually is reflected in the stock price or the volume of the stock. Advice, don't bet against the big guys you'll lose most times.

Amazing production and content as always. However, I have to point out that Melvin isn’t short selling oriented fund. Most of their poistions are long and one of their biggest holdings was Amazon, this is one of the main reasons why they generated high returns from 2015 to 2020. Better description would be that they are hedge fund focused on consumers and technology stocks with mostly long postions and few shorts to hedge their positions.
@Finaius3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. However, there's almost no short funds without any long exposures. Melvin was just caught in the center of this short squeeze.
@frangjoni34863 жыл бұрын
I agree, even Kyle Bass has some long holdings haha. However, Melvin is mostly long, it is not “short based” like Citron or Kynikos.
@lnhart71573 жыл бұрын
I think the distinction is more that a typical short seller like Chanos is also long on positions but afaik they're usually long on index funds or similar, so their long positions are not what they do their research on. Melvin I think it a sort of classical long short fund that puts on positions in both directions. I might be wrong of course. But my impression of the standard short sellers is that they don't really go long individual stocks. edit: Of course, for the whole GameStop saga it doesn't really matter what exactly Melvin Capital's strategy is.
