I learned of this production through Aron Kincaid's memoirs, the film is very well made and follows the story closely - I prefer it to the theatrical release of Heart of Darkness.

"«I won’t be there to see you go,» I began with an effort. «The rest ... I only hope I have understood, too.» «You have. From first to last»-and for the first time there seemed to be a faltering, something strained in his whisper. He caught hold of my arm, but the ringing of the supper bell made me start. He didn’t though; he only released his grip." They even cut short this beautiful moment. Guess they considered the original story a bit too ambiguous and didn't want to risk audiences thinking Leggatt and the captain shared feelings for each other.

Read the story. It is explained further. Conrad was born in Poland, lost his parents as a teenager, went to sea at 16, worked his way up tp sea captain, and retired in England, where he began to write. He was a great writer who wrote in a language which was not his native language. Incredibly talented guy. Why does he take this stranger aboard? He sees himself in this guy. The book emphasizes this, that they look alike. He's a young captain on his first command, new to the crew who have been together for months. In this stowaway, he sees himself. The captain is the Christ figure.....he looks down over the rail at a naked, broken man in the sea. Nakedness is symbolic of his helplessness.....the water of baptism. Now he achieves salvation from his sin through Christ. The Christ figure risks everything to save a stranger. He risks his reputation, his budding career, his ship, his crew, and could end up in prison. Why does the captain identify with this guy? I think it's because he knows that a good man can be pushed beyond his ability to cope, even to murder.

I have heard it said that this story is about homosexuality, specifically the relationship between the captain and stowaway. That is complete nonsense. When the push by the LGBTQ community to be accepted as a mainstream lifestyle began, that community looked for every possible nuance throughout history and literature to find evidence of homosexuality among respected people and respected works. This story is full of Christian symbolism from beginning to end, even including a quote from the Bible. Joseph Conrad was Polish....almost certainly Catholic. He was a sailor for many years, and I'm pretty sure homosexuality would not have gone over well on ships in the 1800s. They would have thrown him overboard, not made him Captain. He married after his retirement from the sea. 19th century literature was full of men saying they "loved" each other, something men wouldn't say today, and even greeting each other with a kiss. So is the Bible. In this story, the narrator is fascinated by the stowaway, not because of sexual attraction but because he sees himself in this other self....through him finding out what makes himself tick. There but for the grace of God go I, I suppose. The captain shows mercy, because he suspects that he could also have committed the crime under the same circumstances. He recognizes that this is not a bad guy and probably saved the ship. I wanted to nip the homosexuality thing in the bud. Don't cheapen a great story.
