Interview by David Ehrlich (film.com) with actors Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr., and director Destin Daniel Cretton of the film Short Term 12

Short Term 12, • Short Term 12 Official...
"The indie dramedy follows the lives of Grace (21 Jump Street's Brie Larson) and Mason (The Newsroom's John Gallagher Jr.), two counselors at a foster care facility for troubled teenagers. The mix of roiling emotions and dark humor they find there comes straight from the real-life experiences of first-time writer-director Destin Cretton, who worked at a similar facility before going to film school. Once there, he made a brief prototype of Short Term 12 as his thesis film in 2009. Four years later, his full-length version is a festival darling, which seems to have caught the filmmaker a little off guard. "It's weird for me to have something so personal be accepted by so many people," says Cretton, who cites Hoop Dreams and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as inspirations. "Awards are wonderful, but it's really just a reflection of the wonderful conversations that we've been getting after the screenings" - Entertainment Weekly

I got here quite late but I really liked this interview. Very different questions, like the purpose of the "12" in the title, which made me wonder about it since I first watched the film last year. Also bringing up the making of the score, which I adore, Brie's riding that bike, and feedback from these kids. Very happy with it!

I am a little bit more interested in this director, and especially since he’s going for the Shang-Chi movie. He is Asian, but not necessarily a Martial Arts director, as clearly shown. But, Even Ang Lee wasn’t before Crouching Tiger, so it could work if he did practice. The best I guess to hope for is that the action is done more akin to either that one-shot from Black Panther or I guess,...yeah, Crouching Tiger fights.

So once again I'm typing this comment because of my stupid phone. Thank you for nothing. 😡😡 So I won't quote it and won't know the exact timestamp... There's a funny moment at whatever timestamp, like around minute 8 or something like that, when the host says something like "after a long summer of superheroes it's refreshing to see something different" and Brie replies "a real superhero". 😊 "Short Term 12" came out 10 years ago. It served as an audition tape for Brie's Oscar winning role in "Room", which gave her career a huge boost. Little did she know that she would win an Oscar three years later and little did she know that she will be confirmed as a real Superhero in July 2016" after rejecting the role twice because of the pressure, the fame, the physical aspect. Brie got very lucky that she got recast as Kate on "United States of Tara" in 2009. She wanted to quit acting. This fantastic dramatic movie called "Short Term 12" was a ramp for her meteoric rise to fame. I wish she would play more dramatic roles like that but at the same time I understand that these roles are super exhausting and that Brie prefers doing action movies over playing in little dramatic movies. "Lessons in Chemistry" will gives us drama Brie and that's great. I ❤ it when I hear a new fact about Brie that I didn't already know. It's rare because I've seen so much of her and because she's so private. So for some unknown movie, Brie wanted a better ending for her character but the director explained to her that it's not about her, it's about the movie, which obviously is greater than what one actor wants. That sounds so much like Brie. She picks her roles carefully and she falls in love with her characters. 😊
