There are keebs, and there are KEEBS. The Angry Miao brand fits in with the latter category. Their R3 keyboard is a solid piece of hardware with smooth buttery key switches, a customizable LED color screen, a wide arrange of color variations, and even wireless. But, the keyboard costs about $600... and I LOVE IT.

Other reviews like BadSeedTech and such cover some pretty hard shortcomings with this board, such as very basic/unfinished layout/firmware customization. I just don't like it that much because of how boring it is. It's pretty much a run-of-the-mill gasket mounted 75% keyboard. The biggest sell is the LED screen, and to be honest it's not even that useful: not only does the screen face away from the user, but if you're using a keyboard in the first place you've got a monitor in front of your face. Overall it just kinda looks dope, but you can do that for less than $600 in the keyboard space no problem.

TL;DW; It comes in a 2003 mall kiosk poker chip set case, which is impressive somehow. It's fully hotswap but comes with no tools. It does come with stickers though. It's too steep, but that's ok because maybe I should like a steeper keyboard because this one is steeper. It's hotswap, but there's no clearance around the keys to hotswap but that's ok because no clearance is probably better because this one doesn't have much clearance. It requires a cable but doesn't come with a cable, but that's ok because you can't expect a super expensive keyboard to come with a cable can you? It has a screen that's right side up for people who can't see it and upside down for people who can. I can't type well on it but that's ok because I'm clearly not used to a good keyboard. I want this keyboard badly because I've talked myself into thinking it's really good even though everything I said about it is bad. It will say my name on the screen.

It's a shame that you didn't go more into looking at the keyboard apart from just the basic visuals. What other configuration options are there for the display? Does it come with its own software? For which OS'es or maybe it's web-based? Is there software for configuring the keyboard layout or does it perhaps run a fork of QMK? Nah. In hifi and audiophile communities there's tons of misinformation and snake oil selling. Like "audio enhancing" stones that might cost hundreds of dollars and you are supposed to put them in a corner somewhere and the sound will just magically be better. Keyboard enthusiasts fully know that they are not getting anything meaningful for their money. They seem to understand that they are paying for the feeling, looks and sound. They know that every single 60% layout keyboard is functionally pretty much exactly the same. I bought a keyboard that cost me a bit over $300. Year later the same company released the exactly same keyboard but it was red instead of black and it's a limited edition. What did I do? I bought it. It cost over $400. Did I get anything for my money? Functionally, nope. But I got a red keyboard that does the exact same thing as the previous keyboard. Now that I think of it... maybe I should go and buy some of those magic hifi stones..

They allow for things like macros on single keypresses, switching to function layers while holding whatever keys, or even different numbers of taps on a single key doing different things. ZMK, I think, is the one that supports bluetooth-enabled microcontrollers, QMK is the most popular, and VIA is I think second most popular after QMK.

VIA is an alternative that skips the flashing part (where you put the keymap file you made onto the keyboard), and allows you to do so with a nice GUI a lot faster. TL;DR - VIA support lets you change the keymap of a keyboard super fast.

I’m honestly a silver switch kind of guy so I didn’t expect to like that sound at all but it hits just the right audio spot for me and I’m like 👀 but it’s 600 dollars… and for me it’s not a split keyboard 🥲 I really like my split keyboards with Ortholinear layout. I do love the aesthetics of this though and I do wish it came with a switch puller and the screen is nice. If I had the money just laying around I’d be tempted to get this. I’m good with 10 degree angle of typing. It not coming with a cable is pretty bad 😕 I mean I do have a custom cable but I would need to get another custom cable just for this cause mine isn’t usb c

I used to switch keyboard pretty often because I was buying the cheapest membrane stuff around (at first wired than wireless, etc.). It was like 1.5 years or less per keyboard or something and after that something would break. I've bought a razer black widow in 2015 and I'm still typing on it now (changed key caps, added some rubber o-rings to dampen the sound a bit), some things don't work as they should though, and that's mostly about the stabilizers on the large keys, especially the spacebar is basically unpressable with my left thumb, but I mostly use the right thumb for it and it works. The Enter key also sometimes gets stuck as well. I guess my point was if I was to buy another keyboard I really want to know the type of stabilizers they use and how easy it is to get the large keys mounted and unmounted and how well they survive wear and tear. You're not supposed to change your keyboard after a couple of years it should still work years after, but I do wish stuff like the stabilizers would be better designed
@nickthaskater
@nickthaskater 2 жыл бұрын
Stabilizers are an easy fix, especially if you get a hotswap board. If you have plate-mount stabilizers like many prebuilt consumer boards, even easier. Don't be afraid to take the caps off of the affected keys and have a look. If you get another board, you can aim for something that's more serviceable along the lines of a typical custom build that can be easily disassembled and modified/maintained.

For the second time ever did I now hear about something called QMK/VIA with no explanation of what it is. So I googled and found their website and that is the shittiest website ever. No explanation what so ever of what VIA or QMK is, just hype on how great it is. That is the kind of shit I hate the most about elitists. "You don't know what VIA or QMK is? Well that's because YOU DON'T DESERVE TO KNOW! Come back when you've spent a year reading everything ever published about keyboards and you might be able to UNDERSTAND just how unworthy you were!" And to anyone who wondered it's a framework for programming macros and light effects for keyboards. So, that's how fantastic it is. It replaces the manufacturers configuration software. There, how hard was that?
@armeli
@armeli 2 жыл бұрын
@@blahorgaslisk7763 VIA seems to just be a software to do some very basic remapping of keys and depending on the controller board of the keyboard save a few macros on it. QMK on the other hand is a tool you can use to compile a fully customized firmware for a keyboard with layers, macro-keys, multi function keys and more. As far as I know QMK is mostly meant for micro controller based DIY keyboard builds and it just happens to be that a few keyboard manufacturers design their product to support it. I guess it can control some LED lighting as well, but I have no idea to what extent. That said, you are totally right. It's really elitist and annoying when people refer to random niche open source projects as if everyone knows what they are.

@@armeli I took a look at their documentation and yes, they have some pretty good options for customizing the RGB lighting. But I didn't dive deeper as I simply doesn't have that much interest in the subject. Interesting bit about compiling custom firmware for keyboards, but again not something I feel the need for personally. I have had keyboards, mice and joysticks that were programmable and though it was kind of fun to fiddle with, as I didn't have any real use case where the functionality made sense I never touched it after the initial excitement wore off. I did use some macros on a mouse when playing a game or two, but that too lost it's novelty pretty quickly and now it's been years since I last looked at the software. Even color customizations is a lost cause for me. I've been using the same RGB settings for more than five years... I did get somewhat involved with a project that centered around getting remote controls to work with PC's. I spent a lot of time digging into obscure documentation for obscure opensource software with obscure names and a lot of it was written by or maintained by diehard elitists who basically thought that if you had to ask you weren't worth their attention. But I preserved and got my cheapo remote controller to work and do what I wanted, which was controlling the playback of all the Anime I was hooked on from the sofa, with options for skipping intros and changing the color space depending on how they were encoded, selecting subtitle tracks and so on. And then I threw out the TV and got a large monitor instead and the remote got sent of to the e-waste pile... So these projects are not for me...
