I'm pretty convinced that Valve is only able to deliver quality like this because they're a private company. No shareholders to please, no strict profit goals to meet. They are content to deliver high quality even if it shaves down on their own margins a little bit. Had they been a public company, this would be nowhere near as good as it is. Good job Valve.

I think including the Switch in the size/weight comparison would have been REALLY helpful. Yes, I know it's not a 'competitor' to the Deck to the same extent that the other consoles are (although as you said in the LTT video, even their comparison as competitors is limited). But as a handheld gaming device, the Switch is far more ubiquitous. The Switch is something that I (and many others) have a tangible, real understanding of its size and weight; hence comparing it would be far more useful in helping us visualise the size/weight of the Deck. Rather than just comparing it to a bunch of things which most people have also never held/seen IRL.
@frankpayne69022 жыл бұрын
There's a sub-category of portability that the Switch finally tapped into. All of the previous consoles like the PSP/Vita and xDS were designed for leaving your house. When the Switch came along, it felt big and clunky at first but it appealed to people who just wanted the ease of an instant-on gaming device that they could carry from room to room. Headphone jack being removed just a fad that (hopefully) will die soon. There's no basis for it, billions of headphones and studio equipment still use a aux input and it wont just fade out in a year or even 10 years. I'm still on a S9 and I see no reason to pay even more money for a new phone with even less features that the one I've got now. All for the sake of making a phone thinner, seriously? Great video! It's awesome finally getting to see a hands on with a legit production unit. I have one bit of feedback though. I wish you had included a switch for the size/ weight comparison. Since that has a much bigger install base it would have been a more useful comparison for the average person. Personally, I have limited space in my bag, and anything bigger than a Switch is impractical for me to include in my daily carry (though it might still be workable for me on long trips/ vacation if it's a bit bigger)

I miss the steam controller. Yes the rumble was crap, busy the usability, there was nothing like it. It's saddening that no one took up the freedom to develop their own based on Valves schematics. My fear is that it seams Valve does not have an interest in taking any of their products and develop them further, refining on what they produce.

You can see a lot of the design philosophy of the steam controller in the deck, and you can tell it's been refined and improved significantly. Hopefully we'll see a steam controller 2.0 with these improvements.
@Flashfake2 жыл бұрын
@@deadering I'm hoping :) although I see there being an end goal that we are not aware of. Each one of these hardware releases from Valve, is simply a proof of concept to a far grander plan. I just wonder, why not both? My expectoration is that there will not be a steam deck 2.0, even if it is just updating the hardware.
@universegaming13532 жыл бұрын
@@Flashfake I think the reason why Valve has not made a V2 of the Steam Controller is because they lost a patent lawsuit which contributed to the eventual discontinuation of the Steam Controller, though it was discontinued before the lawsuit.

last week i told my girlfriend that i cant wait for the new handheld gaming device i preordered last summer. i told her that i can play it EVERYWHERE, in the plane when we fly into the holidays, in the car, on business trips etc. after a while she started laughing at me with a little annoyance „why dont you say some more places where you can play it?“ now, i see the box at 0:40 and valve just casually places all those places into the box! i LOVE it!

Look, it isn't a laughable ripoff that could literally buy you a pre-built computer. Also, I wish that these companies would copy DJI's approach to thumbsticks: you can unscrew them and they have little holding slots. It's a game-changer.

I thought about that too, but I can't see how they'd feasibly do so in this form factor. The fact that they're replaceable at all is a big win already.
