It was hard to really determine how well the phone performed during the voice recording because there was still music playing while the voice over played back. When Brandon was talking about hearing the background noise on the recording I just had to take his word since I couldn't hear the pure audio by itself! I heard the wind over the music but not the plane, train, and lawn work. Next time I might suggest you stop playing the background music during a section where the point is to listen to just the recording.

I've been running the 5 (2) for a few years, I'm not a photographer or anything and it's still almost a perfect phone for me. I too have the 5ii. Upgraded from an XZ1 I'd been using for a couple years. Got it for about the equivalent of $700 USD brand new in the spring of 2021. I really like what Sony does. They offer features that pretty much every other manufacturer dropped, so they're filling an important gap for people who still want those features. I think more people could be happy with a Sony phone, but having very little marketing and not offering them in stores is always an issue for regular people who just get the suggested Samsung or Apple phones on contracts. I hope to hold onto this phone for another couple years, at least.

The naming convention is why I insist on calling them Xperia 1 Mk.IV, or Xperia 5 Mk.IV. product naming schemes of such an iterative nature where the product name already has a number in it should be delineated with a designation of mark, or Mk., followed by the revision number, to show iterative versioning. I do really wish that Sony were big enough to be a legitimate influence on the rest of the smartphone market. I adore the fact that they listen to their customers. Their customers were like, "We really like phones with headphone jacks" so Sony put it back after they tried to ditch it with the Xperia 1 Mk.1. Their customers were like, "We really like stereo front facing speakers" so Sony put them back after they tried to ditch them several times. Their customers were like, "We really like expandable storage" so Sony maintained a MicroSD card slot in their phones. Their customers were like, "We like larger screens to scroll through our social media feeds but our hands are too small for them" so Sony made 21:9 aspect ratio displays. It really is an admirable quality in a company when they listen to their customers. If Apple had done so then we'd have Type-C and a less obtrusive front-facing camera solution by now and Samsung wouldn't have ditched the Note lineup or removed the headphone jack and expandable storage.
@mixswist

Well, Sony call it Xperia 1 Mk.4 and Xperia 5 Mk.4. I don't know why people don't have problem with camera named like this but when Sony naming any other product with Mk.2/3/4 people say their naming is bad, or maybe I am a nerd who like remember thing with their code. I use Xperia since Z2 and I never satisfy with other brand even though they are better than Xperia in spec sheet.
@mndlessdrwer
@mndlessdrwer 2 жыл бұрын
@@mixswist Sony phones have a lot to like. Stereo front-firing speakers on many of their flagship models, headphone jacks on most models, microSD card slots on most models, and pretty minimalist UI on most Android versions. From my somewhat limited experience with their phones, they tend to just work. I also don't necessarily mind their naming scheme, I just wish that they more clearly delineated the version iteration in their branding and not just when talking about their phones. Samsung and Apple have done an alright job with their iterative naming since their product lines are generic or proper nouns followed by the iteration number, followed by the variant designation. So iPhone 14 Pro or Galaxy S22 Ultra. If Sony took that approach literally it would probably be Xperia 4 (Xperia 5 Mk. IV), Xperia 4 Ultra (Xperia 1 Mk. IV), and Xperia 4 Lite (Xperia 10 Mk. IV). Not saying it's necessarily better, as it is somewhat less memorable, but it is clearer. Even just writing it out as the Xperia 1 Mk. IV makes it clearer than Xperia 1 IV.

For me the two things that are missing from the xperia phones are longer software support and improved computational photography. I returned my 5iii due to the image quality of indoor (non-ideal lighting) photographs, which is where I take about 90% of my photos. It just needs to be better, lagging behind a lot of other phone manufacturers that don't have an in-house camera division. I felt like I needed to process everything in lightroom before posting it, even my 4-year-old pixel 2 produced better images straight out of the phone. Edit to add: if they revived the xperia compact with the feature set this phone has (just shorter) I'd probably overlook the photography issues entirely!

@@octorokpie Fair enough. I just don't think that most people will share that opinion if they've ever used an iPhone, since it tends to take exceptional photos in most situations thanks to their post-processing effects and HDR multi-capture. I'd like to see Sony include such a feature and the ability to remap their shutter button to open that point & shoot camera app instead. I suspect they'd garner more mass-market appeal for their camera setup if they did so. I mean, Sony already has some of the best cameras and optics on the market in their smartphones but they aren't really leveraging them to the extreme in the way that consumers seem to desire and there's no particularly convenient way to add that functionality. They can keep their pro apps on there so people can shoot with extreme precision when they want to or have the time to do so, but I'd love to see them make an app that is dumbed down for the average consumer and requires no thought or effort to get iPhone level or better images. Will they look as natural as a photo that you've set up the ISO, shutter speed, white balance, color grading, and the like on? No. Will it be way more convenient and have a better aesthetic compared to using their basic mode with minimalistic post-processing? Yeah, probably.

You should have turned on Dolby Atmos for the speaker test. The sound quality of the speakers when Atmos is enabled is very noticeable. Quick way is the white box bellow the notifications. That's the quick access for Audio and Display. Also did you have Creator mode enabled for the screen. There is also Sony's spatial audio and AI audio enhancements that I am yet to try. I just upgraded from Xperia 5 II to 5 IV and I am very happy with the upgrade. Definitely a gamer/creater phone. You can stream directly to KZbin using the game enhancer app. It comes with scenes and other streaming options which is a bit crazy to see.

And the best part is it's not overheating. Sony for whatever reason likes to put overheating messages on all their devices when you open the app for the first time. Granted there's a "don't show again" button but I think they should remove the message entirely and only show it when it actually overheats to avoid confusions.

I have a question why do companies think that it is eco-friendly not to include items that you will 100% guaranteed need to have in order to use the item that you just purchased but they take no effort in making the device very long lasting such as repairability or upgradeability or replacing the batteries in the thing easy throw all that out but we're saving the planet by not giving you a cord that you definitely need in order to use our thing sure everybody's got some of these but rather than buying another one when you need one you could already have another one when you need one since those cords also don't last forever

The naming scheme could not be easier to understand. Xperia 1 series is the flagship, 5 is the compact version of the flagship, and 10 is the budget series. I think tech reviewers just like to make fun of Sony. The pro i was a successor of the Xperia pro; it's a different series. unlike other phone manufacturers where pro is just an excuse to get people to pay more money, pro series is for actual professionals in different fields. I've been using the Xperia 5 III for about half a year and I'm generally very pleased with it. The 21:9 aspect ratio looked weird in the beginning, but I got used to it pretty quick. The selfie camera is terrible, but isn't much of a problem for me personally. The battery is a bit weak for my liking. A full charge is enough for a day, but if leave the house with 50-60% I feel the need to put it in energy save mode The headphone jack is awesome, but I really wish it would be on the bottom. The top placement makes zero sense. I absolutely love the side fingerprint reader compared to them under screen optical fingerprint reader of my Huawei P30. It's quick and seems to be more forgiving of workers hands than previously mentioned. The camera is great, although the pictures are a little bleak compared to the competitors and the software enhancements to compensate for blur could use some work. Screen is great. 1080p is definitely enough for this size. Overall there are nitpicks, but i really hope they keep making them as I could see my next phone being a Sony as well.

Unpopular opinion: The naming scheme is the best there is for people that don't know nothing about phones. Numbers can go up to positive infinity, but don't make sense for a product if they go into the negative space. So a "the smaller the number, the better"-naming scheme makes a lot more sense than the approach many other companies have to this. You can be sure that the Xperia 1 will always be the best lineup from Sony, while you can't tell if the A72 from Samsung is now better than a S22.

I don't really get why people make such a big deal out of how Sony has named their smartphones. To me it's one of the better ones out there. I love my 1 III, but I've had some issues with it and will have to send it to get repaired (fingerprint sensor stopped working and mobile data is having issues). And so I've ordered an iPhone to replace the Sony as my main device. I will still keep the Sony once I get it back from repairs due to the fact that to me it's the only phone with a camera system and (edit: camera) software that I actually want to use and it'll continue as my music device. I also don't get the whole Android vs iOS. Reason why I went with an iPhone as my new main device is that for me, they've always been more reliable than any Android phones I've had. My current Sony isn't the first Android-phone I've had issues with (to the point of having to get it sent for repairs) and I still love using Android-phones. I've had a ton of issues with iPhones as well (especially WI-FI), but never issues that made me unable to use the phone and having to send one for repairs.

It looks like they addressed most of the reasons I picked the 1 iii over the 5 iii. What I'd love to know is if Sony fixed the 2 biggest issues with Sony phones: (1) a camera flash that is so incredibly dim it's useless as a flashlight - sure it's great for pictures but let's be real 95% of the use of a smartphone flash is as a flashlight. And (2) completely useless screen auto-brightness which makes using the manual camera settings impossible when it's on. And it's so shifty and constantly increasing and decreasing in brightness in normal use that you just end up turning it off and doing manual brightness control.
