my advice. Height is your friend ... don't rush after other pilots if you see them leaving a thermal. Once you are up there ... separate the height into three parts. If you are on the top third ... look at the clouds. if you are in the middle look at the terrain and the clouds if you are in the bottom third look at the terrain and signs of thermal activity.

For the distance records, downwind will for sure cover much more distance and give you bragging rights. What requires more skills to topland almost anywhere to use the toilet, drink, eat at a restaurant, and take off, fly back home. Make sure you have plenty of altitude as security, and keep always an eye on safe landing spots and public transport from above. I use FATMAP app on the phone and Garmin In-Reach Mini. If you ever fly over unpopulated areas, better upwind, bring your emergency blanket, water, satellite messenger so you can still send SOS, incase you have no mobile network. Know where are the emergency shelters. Lines can break in very strong thermals, so spare lines can be handy.

First is always an adventure, don't worry about goals, fly well and experience something new and amazing. :D (don't fly into airspace or something stupid like that of course...)
