modern vrm can protect the gpu in case of high side mosfet short. they do this by detecting the pulse width. if the pulse width exceed the threshold (indicating a shorted high side mosfet), the controller will turn the low side mosfet on, shorting the entire rail (crowbar action), thus protecting the gpu.

The **NCP303150** and **NCP303150D** are both integrated driver and MOSFET with integrated current monitor devices manufactured by ON Semiconductor ¹²³. The NCP303150D is a newer version of the NCP303150 ³. The main difference between the two is that the NCP303150D has an additional feature of **Zero Cross Detection (ZCD)**, which allows it to operate in synchronous rectifier (PWM) mode when ZCD_EN is set low ¹. The NCP303150, on the other hand, does not have this feature.

Hi Sorin, I believe that both MOSFETs are the same, the 'D' version is the older one (datasheet is from October, 2019 − Rev. 2) with the *OLD* ON-Semi logo, while the non-D version is the newer (and probably currently in production, with the *NEW* ON-Semi logo (datasheet is from July, 2022 − Rev. 3). That is most likely the reason that Mouser and such still have the 'older' version in stock. Hope this helps. Cheers.

@MichaelRabeno: Completely agree with you. The former Motorola, today On Semiconductor, merged with Fairchild Semiconductor (both American), both currently owned by the Chinese company Lenovo. The first four letters of the alphabet (A,B, C & D) are authorized by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) for internal changes that electronic companies make to their devices or products; including profound alterations or modifications in its basic internal circuitry, with the understanding that it is an improvement that will NOT affect the original functionality for which it was designed. Another way of saying it, in this specific case, the part number NCP303150 (from a former American company, which of course, knows this regulation) can have any of the 4 letters mentioned without the written authorization and/or approval of this federal agency. All the best.

All I can see is that the one without D is from the newer revision datasheet (r3 vs r2 on the D vatiant). And also, in the r3 datasheet, it says on first page bottom right: NCP303150/D Meaning, it goes for both. They should be equal.

If you want to mention a gaming laptop brand, which brand and model would be your personal recommendation? All gaming laptops stop working as soon as they receive very little amount of static electricity on the motherboard and short circuits happen almost all the time. which brand you think has the best components and design on the motherboard that can survive shorts?

Hi Sorin, please check it. The two chips you mentioned belong to the NCP303150 series from ON Semiconductor, but they differ in their package type. Here's the difference: NCP303150D: This chip uses a DFN-6 package (Dual-Flat No-Lead), also referred to as QFN-6. It's a package without lead pins that is mounted on the surface of a PCB. This type of package is commonly found in modern electronic applications and allows for space-saving and good thermal performance. NCP303150: This chip is the same as NCP303150D, but it comes in an SOT-23-5 package. SOT-23-5 is a smaller package with five lead pins and is often used in applications with limited space. In terms of their electrical characteristics and functions, these two chips are identical. The difference lies only in the package type, making the choice dependent on the type of mounting and space constraints in your design.
@d614gakadoug9
@d614gakadoug9 11 ай бұрын
ChatGPT is spewing artificial stupidity. There is absolutely zero chance it is correct. The package is VERY much larger and with far, far more pins than a SOT-23-5 or QFN-6. This is instantly apparent from the video.

9:58 it is nothing strange. As you well know you have two mosfets inside that chip. One is based on ground, second on 19v. if second is shorted then the 19v will pass and GPU will take it and die, but if first mosfet is shorted then the GPU will be taken to ground only so it will survive. very often the second mosfet dies (19v) but as you now see - not always.

Correct me if I am wrong but even the high side mosfet output is only like 1v. So even if the low side mosfet drain to source is shorted. Only 1v will go to the GPU? Or both the mosfets work together to produce that 1v?

The NCP303150 and NCP303150D are like two peas in a pod, or rather, two MOSFETs in a package. They're both high-performance, integrated driver and MOSFET solutions, perfect for high-current DC-DC buck power conversion applications. The only difference between them is their packaging. The NCP303150 comes in a standard package, while the NCP303150D is a "D" version, which means it has a slightly different package type. It's like the difference between a regular and a deluxe burger - same delicious MOSFET goodness, just with a slightly different bun.

ask google .. ooops Bard , when you don't know :-) not sure if it's relevant : The main differences between the NCP303150 and NCP303150D MOSFETs are as follows: Threshold voltage: The NCP303150 has a threshold voltage of 1.2 V, while the NCP303150D has a threshold voltage of 2.5 V. This means that the NCP303150 is more likely to conduct higher leakage currents than the NCP303150D. Maximum drain-source current: The NCP303150 has a maximum drain-source current of 2 A, while the NCP303150D has a maximum drain-source current of 4 A. This means that the NCP303150D can support higher loads than the NCP303150. Drain-source resistance: The drain-source resistance of the NCP303150 is 100 mΩ, while the drain-source resistance of the NCP303150D is 50 mΩ. This means that the NCP303150D has a lower resistance, which results in lower power dissipation. Maximum operating temperature: The maximum operating temperature of the NCP303150 is 125 °C, while the maximum operating temperature of the NCP303150D is 150 °C. This means that the NCP303150D can withstand higher temperatures than the NCP303150.

if the bottom side mosfet goes first then the GPU survives because there will be no permanent exposure of the GPU to main rail. if the topside mosfet goes first then it's usually the beginning of a sad story (but still the GPU might survive if the bottom side goes for the ultimate sacrifice during the very next cycle). exposing the silicon to B+ voltage will not kill it, but the current pushed through by that voltage and the related heat will kill it. so if something stops the current (and therefore heat) before it destroys the chip then it will survive.

Id never do this on any gaming laptop as I am quite sure most of them come pushed to the very limit already. Apart from that I would think faulty components.

I don't understand the bad reputation for Lenovo. I've been selling them for 10 years (along with Dell, HP and Acer). They are nice machines. Of course, you have to know what hardware to get - don't just get the $200 junk on display at Walmart.

Bad reputation for Lenovo is not quality it’s just bad for people who fix them, a lot of soldered ram a lot of glue on ram chips and or other chips and that makes them unfixable …

Educated guess? Probably the capacitor at the output of the mosfet power suplies has large enough capacity to keep the GPU suplied during the power cycle of the removed mosfet.
@robertjung8929
@robertjung8929 11 ай бұрын
nope.. the controller is keeping the output constant no matter what, so if one phase is missing then the controller will widen the pulses on the phases to compensate. obviously there will be a higher ripple on the output especially during high load because of that missing phase. under heavy load the other phases will be heating more (higher current) and the GPU might (and will) become unstable because of the ripple.

Maybe the short start on the low side mostfet? If its happend on high side mosfet you have 20v on gpu vcccore, so bye bye gpu... but if it is on the low side mosfet?

what the difference between mosfet NCP303150D and NCP303150?
@covid_is_lie
@covid_is_lie 11 ай бұрын
The main difference between the MOSFET NCP303150D and the NCP303150 is the drain-to-source voltage (Vds) rating. The NCP303150D has a Vds rating of 55 V, while the NCP303150 has a Vds rating of 40 V. This means that the NCP303150D can be used in applications where higher voltages are required. Another difference between the two MOSFETs is the continuous drain current (Id) rating. The NCP303150D has an Id rating of 50 A, while the NCP303150 has an Id rating of 40 A. This means that the NCP303150D can be used in applications where higher currents are required.

As for the paste, you are not doing it right because you are heating it with hot AIR. The pastes are made for temperature transfer from surfaces

@@50000000002501: Thermal paste operating temperature range of -40 to 200 °C. 2: the heat is transferred from the bottom up to the processors, i.e. from hot to cold.it is not heat produced by heat resistance and air. 3: charge and discharge cycles transport charge. the best way is to put it on a chip with the classic method

Maybe it was playing just on the battery when the mosfer got shorted and in this case the current is not that high and GPU survive

you can't play on battery ;) the battery simply can't provide enough power. the GPU power and performance is seriously capped during operation on battery.

Hello🤝 I think the GPU survived because it is AMD, or maybe the customer was lucky, and as for the mosfets, if everything is correct, and if the difference is only the letter D, then I think it's just a different manufacturer who how you label your product. Nice lesion 👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👋👋👋👋👋

When the laptop is left on without the grease and heatsink, the laptop will shut down because of the overheating. That resets the power of the cpu, chipset, and vga.
